Nice pics! Outta curiosity, I didn't think the MkII had a bubble hood ( I can't remember the name of the darned things), but rather had a straight hood along the lines of the Hurricane. What am I missing?

The prototype and early MkI aircraft had a straight hood. The flat hoods were soon changed to the slightly bulged variety. They didn't really have a name on the Spitfire, but a similar installation was called the Malcolm hood on the P-51.

The red part is the auxiliary fuel tank, beneath that is the rudder pedals and the pilot's feet. So a damaged tank would slosh petrol into the cockpit where it can run rearwards under the seat.

Fly by wire? This is what the inside of a Hurricane looks like. The tubes are steel and are the main structural strength of the Hurricane, the other framework is spruce and gives the aerodynamic shape. The bulkhead at the rear of the photo is behind the pilot's seat, the bulkhead in the middle is the rear of the radio compartment, the pipework at the bottom is part of the cooling system. You can just about see a few of the joins between the fuselage framework, each one is a pretty nifty piece of engineering in itself. The cables are the elevator and rudder controls, the slack cables are the rudder trim. LF363 has her rudder removed at the moment so there's nothing to keep the tension on there. The bottom centre cables are (at least if iirc) the elevator controls and the run above that are the main rudder controls. The cable run at top left(ish) are the elevator trim cables. The cockpit, minus the pilots seat. The rotary switch at top left is the fuel tank selector, there's a long tube that runs from here down to a rotary valve near the pilot's feet that controls which tank supplies fuel to the engine. The red bit at bottom right is the gate to stop accidental selection of undercarriage up on the ground, it needs to be held out of the way before the gear can be selected up. On the same panel and operated by the same lever is the flap control. The chains on the stick are the aileron controls, the stick only moves left and right in the top third (the bit with the gun button on it). The whole thing moves forward and back however. Another view of the cockpit. With the seat removed we can easily see the control rods and cables from the primary flying controls. The cables (top and bottom) are the rudders, the top rod is the elevator control and the lower one is the ailerons. They transfer to cables just behind the bulkhead, in fact we can just see the aileron drum in the centre middle (covered in grease). You can also see that at the bottom of the pic the right hand floor panel has been removed, the cockpit 'floor' is actually the top of the undercarriage bay and a long way below where the pilot rests his feet (the two platforms). The seat usually sits over the control rods, where the elevator control rod bends, so with the seat removed it's important to watch where you stick your feet when climbing in and out. Not the greatest pictures ever, but they were taken in a spare few moments today between jobs so apologies for the quality (or lack thereof).
