ASHBERY76 -> Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/20/2012 11:33:02 AM)

It would be pretty simple to add a racial tech for regenerating armour.I want a Vorlon type race with those cool ships. We could do with a new playable race.

I'm with you :).

Oh nice indeed. +1 [:)]

I hope we get a new race. Expansions are not cheap so we need something substantial.

WiZz -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/20/2012 3:01:05 PM)

First of all, DW needs a fixing of existing issues and boost of "intelligence" for AI. Other new features are secondary, I hope.

w1p -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/20/2012 3:07:52 PM)

game needs to be fully opened to modding eg. components, research, etc.

Cauldyth -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/20/2012 3:56:05 PM)

I want a pony.

shinobu -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/20/2012 4:42:52 PM)

Babylon 5 had some GREAT ships, but the greatest were the Vorlons...

i want an AI that will send in a fleet and use it correctly.

Igard -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/21/2012 12:11:57 AM)

Vorlon, Species 8472, The Shadows, all very cool bio ships! I'd like to see something along these lines too.

Someone mentioned modding. I'm not ready for more until it's easier to mod characters. It's been requested, but I'll say it again; what I'd like is the ability to add a random character into the attribute fields instead of painstakingly typing each figure thousands of times.

And I hope Elliot hasn't forgotten about the ship scaling issue I'm having with Borg cubes. I was messing about with custom designs today. I wanted to see if I could force the AI to use only huge cube designs for its cruisers, but to no avail, it will always revert back to the stock design when the custom one is too big. Borg cubes shouldn't look like croutons floating around in soup, they should be massive.[:(]

We have told Elliot this.... whether crouton size or cinder block....
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!!!!!! FIX THIS!!!!!

You know this brings up something that drives me nuts about 4X games. I know it would be hard to implement this sort of stuff, but why is racial diversity limited to tech's and aethestetics. Why does no 4X have a race like the quarians that can't inhabit planets and must rely on nomadic ships and orbital objects. I want to play a robotic race that uses relay networks that can be disrupted, causing my ships to be useless for that area. How about a race like the Asguard from Stargate. They would have incredibly powerful ships, but suffer from genetic diseases allowing them to only survive on limited planets, and suffering from slowed birth races. That would prevent them from massing units, but their ships would be powerful in one on one. How about more than just one or two technology's. How about an insect or bug race that can infest things, or a bio race that uses unique bio weapons that rot ships apart.

This is not a Distant World's issue but one of the greater 4X community.

Self repairing ships? We have that. They are called repair bots and the ikkuro start with them. So thanks for wasting everyone's time with your meaningless request.
Also babylon 5 is crap. Bad acting, bad cg, bad plot, bad sf. And you are a bad person for liking it and should feel bad.

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/21/2012 8:18:17 AM)

In my opinion you are a rude negative nob. Each to their own.

I actually never mentioned self repairing ships or anyone else. But I will ignore your troll and useless response.

But for anyone else interested in my ideas, I want this to be about more than just a simple one or 2 tech or a few statistical changes. This is just an idea for some future expansion, but it would be nice to have races that felt less like Star Trek races. You watch Star Trek or even Babylon 5 to an extent and most races function and look similar with historical and other minor differences. I am asking for mechanically different races rather than just some small features that differ them.

The current races are cool and have some differences, and some of the ones I outlined may even be already present in some, but expanding beyond this and having more far out races would be cool. I think Imperium Galactica actually had some elements such as this but its been so long since I played it.

To answer the bit I bolded: to make the difficult job of the game designer (somewhat) easier. Don't get me wrong, I quite like your ideas and would like to see a game like that but... The difficulty lies in balancing the races with very different strategies/mechanisms/prospensities and the inevitable 'exploits' players will develop. Each race must have different means of interacting with each other race which is unique and yet roughly level in potency. You know, can bugs infest robots? No? So what happens when... (20 races equals 400 unique modes of interaction!)

I've been very happily surprised that Distant Worlds gets the balance thing right enough and yet allows for substantial differences. I was highly suspicious of the victory conditions at first but they work like a charm. Not overbalanced but allowing for some remarkably different games. Big kudos to Code Force and Matrix. [sm=Cool-049.gif]

But keep asking. The more it's asked for the more likely it is to happen. [;)]

p.s From your description the Asguard seem somewhat similar to the Dhayut, at least in effect. And maybe the playable pirates we might get with the next expansion will be somewhat like the quarians?

Gareth_Bryne -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/21/2012 3:19:43 PM)

feeloftraveler, bingo. To make an additional point - Starcraft (any) has three (3) races with generally different mechanics. An attempt to bring this to DW would require rework of <20 races, and a partial BAD example of that is SotS 2, with 6-7 races and unknown aliens. Which is only a part of its problems. Indeed, the problem of mechanics, especially applied to racial variety, is overwhelming.

I love the idea of bioships and so far I never seen a game in my space 4x library that had bioships in it (that's as far as I know)

Also it would be cool if bioships have special planetary bombardment that would infest the planet and its inhabitants and would let you take advantage of the full bonus of the particular race since and it would be the sort of ground invasion for the bioships.

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Request for Bio ships in next expansion. (8/22/2012 7:09:30 PM)

The Florians in the Armada 2526 expansion had a seeding ability like you describe. There are lots of cool options for a possible bio race that would not take much work.Maybe they could start in fluidic nebulae.
