ORIGINAL: Tausken You know this brings up something that drives me nuts about 4X games. I know it would be hard to implement this sort of stuff, but why is racial diversity limited to tech's and aethestetics. Why does no 4X have a race like the quarians that can't inhabit planets and must rely on nomadic ships and orbital objects. I want to play a robotic race that uses relay networks that can be disrupted, causing my ships to be useless for that area. How about a race like the Asguard from Stargate. They would have incredibly powerful ships, but suffer from genetic diseases allowing them to only survive on limited planets, and suffering from slowed birth races. That would prevent them from massing units, but their ships would be powerful in one on one. How about more than just one or two technology's. How about an insect or bug race that can infest things, or a bio race that uses unique bio weapons that rot ships apart. This is not a Distant World's issue but one of the greater 4X community. To answer the bit I bolded: to make the difficult job of the game designer (somewhat) easier. Don't get me wrong, I quite like your ideas and would like to see a game like that but... The difficulty lies in balancing the races with very different strategies/mechanisms/prospensities and the inevitable 'exploits' players will develop. Each race must have different means of interacting with each other race which is unique and yet roughly level in potency. You know, can bugs infest robots? No? So what happens when... (20 races equals 400 unique modes of interaction!) I've been very happily surprised that Distant Worlds gets the balance thing right enough and yet allows for substantial differences. I was highly suspicious of the victory conditions at first but they work like a charm. Not overbalanced but allowing for some remarkably different games. Big kudos to Code Force and Matrix. [sm=Cool-049.gif] But keep asking. The more it's asked for the more likely it is to happen. [;)] p.s From your description the Asguard seem somewhat similar to the Dhayut, at least in effect. And maybe the playable pirates we might get with the next expansion will be somewhat like the quarians?
