Dd_01 -> High quality planets (1/3/2013 8:30:11 PM)

I had played many games as Wekkarus, and every freakin time i see the same thing - almost each Continental/Swampy planet had 70++ quality, lots of them were 90+. I can't remember undesirable cont/swamp planet, seriously. But in the same time i never had Ocean or Desert planet with quality 70+ (except Homeworlds). There were very good Volcanic and Ice worlds, but NEVER Ocean or Desert. Is it planned or just sado-randomized?

Without ever paying too much attention to the distribution, I think that Continentals are the least common planets, but always have decent (or better) quality.

A nice mix of good temperature, water and landmass is a bit more rare than a lump of sand, one can imagine.

From the last colony list screenshot of my latest AAR, it shows that the top colonies in my empire (which is an area of space), is 1 desert, 1 ice, and 5 continentals. Playing a desert race. Neither of them was a homeworld.

So yes, the continentals are frequently top material.

But hey, as Ackdarian or space crab I'm not interested in nasty dry land, I need a huge ocean with warm currents and crystal water. And I never had it. Maybe it's just uncommon as Corabbian spice, I don't know.

Well... I think (as I do not have any evidence for it, it is only how I feel) that best planets are Swamp planets. They are only a bit worse in quality than Continentals, but much more common. But yes - the best planets are nearly always continentals. Ocean planets in my games usually were up to 70% quality (but more often than not bellow 50%). Howewer I must say that I seen few Swamp planets bellow 50% and even one Continental. Rare but possible.

In my opinion it would be better if planet quality would depend more on a race You are playing, so the same planet for one race have X quality and for other X+20.

I've never seen a continental or swamp planet below 50% - please screencap if you see it again

Implementation of that would require fine control of racial migration. Otherwise, if I am playing Humans and colonize a nice planet with Gizureans, I'd find the planet quality lower than expected due to the influx of Human migrants, over which I have no control.

Unfortunately, Elliot and Erik have shown no interest in implementing such a system.

Gareth_Bryne -> RE: High quality planets (1/4/2013 3:26:49 PM)

Then again, Gizurean preferred habitats might be different from Human... So many nice ideas, so few that can implement them...

feelotraveller -> RE: High quality planets (1/4/2013 3:33:21 PM)

As to the OP - you will, very occasionally, find higher quality desert and ocean worlds.  But they are rare.  I'm sure it is planned.

The type of planet does impact maxiumum population (+10% for native planet type) and also the fighting strength of ground troops.  The latter can be significant.  Try it yourself by setting up a fight between the Boskara and the Naxxilian, firstly on a volcanic world and then on an ice world.  Vive la difference!

Not a problem Kayoz :) When I will play again DW and I will see continental or swamp planet below 50% I will for sure post a screen of it.

Yes... I know that right now implementing such thing would cause additional problems which would need to be solved, and it is more "empty talk" from my side :( Also another problem would be that most of colonisable planets are Volcano worlds - if Gizureans would get most of them suddenly over 50% than it wouldn't be to good. So propably the way how diffrent types of planets are being created should also be changed in such situation.

Oh, don't get me wrong. The idea has been proposed in various forms, several times in the past. I agree that it would be well worth it to rework the habitability/quality and migration/immigration mechanics. However, it's something that can't be done in bits, as I see it, and will likely require more testing and balancing than Matrix is willing to commit to.

I'd love to see it - but I'm not holding my breath. It took about a year of moaning and griping to get Erik to agree to look at blockade mechanics. Knock on wood.
