So if I don’t start listening and stop butting in with my own opinions, you’re going to give me lesson in tolerance by blocking me……[:D]

Hey, both of you. Intolerance is NOT TOLERATED by me. I find your attitudes intolerable, and you know how much I hate intolerance-I can't tolerate it. So, if you don't stop slapping each other I will classify you both as Dutch.

I have lots of friends on the police force, we have a running joke, my name appears on a list to come get my guns, that is a good day to turn in your badge and stay home. I swore an oath to defend the Constitution, and until they can change the Constitution legally, I will defend her to my last breath.

Haha... I just suggested wrapping things up because the thread seemed to have deteriorated into personal jibes going back and forth rather than any new discussion.

Things have picked up a little since then.

Heaven forbid I should advocate censorship of free thought and expression.

Carry on gentlemen...

Well Rhonda, we certainly have free expression in some of the threads, but how much thought goes into it is another question to ponder. [:D]

Thought? What in the world is that??

parusski -> RE: A new ACW.. (2/5/2013 3:05:12 PM)

I stated earlier that the President's real problem with his gun control measures would actually come from his own party. And it is happening.

"Opponents led by the influential National Rifle Association, oppose any ban on weapons, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid(DEMOCRAT) has indicated that such a provision faced an uphill struggle."

"Reid(DEMOCRAT) told ABC on Sunday that he backed expanding background checks to private gun sales at shows and other steps, but he refused to endorse a ban on what are called assault-style rifles modeled after military weapons."

And:

"...politicians from both major parties oppose such a move as an infringement on constitutional rights, said Harry Reid(DEMOCRAT)."

So, those who get upset with the gun rights(protected in the Bill of Rights) crowd, please, please remember that the Presidents own party, and Senate Majority Leader, are offering nearly as much obstruction on gun control as the Republican party.

Breaking news from LA:

Postal Worker Placed On Leave After Alleged Assault On Girl, 11, who laughed at him

NEWMAN!

UPDATE: The Postal Service has just announced that draconian steps will be taken to prevent a recurrence of a misfortune like this one. In order to rid the streets and parks of errant mail carriers, and acting on advice by President Obama, delivery of mail will henceforth be discontinued not just on Saturday, but also on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

We must BAN postal workers NOW!! LOL, sorry folks.

This might sound stupid to people from the US , please realise this is coming from a dutch guy, but why do you need guns in your house?

Seriously, I don't get it.. I am 33 years old, never lost a nights sleep and I do not own a gun (or any weapon). Is it really that dangerous in the US?

Chickenboy -> RE: A new ACW.. (2/14/2013 11:16:01 PM)

Hi Cannonfodder,

You asked your question in a very non-confrontational and non-judgmental way. Thank you.

Most Americans do not own a gun and most Americans who don't own guns will not be victims of violent crime. Most Americans don't feel that they NEED a gun in the house. If you a 33 YO in the US you would sleep just as soundly as you do in the Netherlands.

The issue is-for those that WANT to own a gun-should they be able to? And if so, what will the rules be for them in terms of types of firearms, laws, access, licensing, etc.

In other words, it's about expression of individual rights. For those that choose to express those rights, how do civil laws of gun ownership address those wishes? And are those laws within the purview of our Constitution and the 2nd Amendment?

Best,

Chickenboy

Because, 10% of the population is either nuts or lazy and our laws don't work.[:-]

It’s a guaranteed protection against tyranny, it’s not about "need".... its our Right, would you ask why we need the 1st amendment or the 3rd.4th.5th and so on ?

I’ve had family from Germany take roundtrips with me to Montana on extended visits to the States that are just in a state of shock how much open land we have in the States west of the Mississippi ,so yes there is still a "need" for some to have a firearm.

Which reminds me of a question that keeps bouncing around in my head. Why don't the gun control advocates focus on arguments and wording to change the Constitution? There is a process for this, it is called "amendment" and it has been used many times. Why is there not even a whisper of a proposal for an amendment?

Further, we must remember (which I think few do) that the Constituion does not give us the right to keep and bear arms. It is carefully worded. The Consitution tells Congress, that they cannot infringe our right to keep and bear arms. This means the Constitution reminds all of us, that we already have a right to keep and bear arms, regardless of what the Constitution says. The Constitution is only saying Congress can't infringe upon this (pre-existing) right.
For a very detailed discussion of this aspect see the SCOTUS majority opinion in the Heller vs DC case.

@Rhonda ... I don't think we've beat it to death ... I don't even think we've gotten started! But we have been off topic most of the time [:D]

Rosseau -> RE: A new ACW.. (2/15/2013 12:00:11 AM)

If I had a gun in the house, my wife would definitely have shot me.

But yes, it's the principle of the thing - a constitutional right to bear arms, if you want or need to.

Well, actually 76,751,637 people in America own guns, according to US Census Bureau Data for 2009. Now that may not be most, but it is far from an insignificant number. I find it sad that people who want to pontificate on America's 2nd amendment have no idea what they speak of.

George Mason, principle author behind the Bill of Rights, advised, “What is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.” Later Mason clarified, “A well-regulated militia, composed of the Gentlemen, Freeholders, and other Freemen was necessary to protect our ancient laws and liberty from the standing army.” Bearing arms remains an inalienable “right of the people.”[/b] Mason wanted each man to suitably furnish for himself weaponry, supplies and training.

It is even more shameful that so many Americans are utterly ignorant of the fact that the 2nd amendment is not for "hunting". Shame on you people. Divining what the 2nd Amendment is for takes no more than reading what it's author, and the other founders, TELL US IT IS FOR. You should pull your heads out of the sand and do a little research.

Take a look at at this video of the brilliant Dr. Walter E. Williams commenting on the second amendment, then read something about it so you naysayers can know what the hell you are talking about:

http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/13/walter-williams-americans-misunderstand-the-point-of-the-second-amendment/

How about this nugget so many ignore:

"If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons entrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair."
-- Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 28

Sorry if the truth above is too much, oh wait, the truth does not matter to gun control people:

" ... to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
-- George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 380

And the best thing for people in other countries to understand is this:

"[The Constitution preserves] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation...(where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."

--James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46
