Ross Moorhouse -> (1/6/2003 7:43:59 PM)

I hate float planes.... :p And they are well out of reach of my CAP too.

derwho -> (1/7/2003 12:52:21 AM)

Float planes are nice little buggers.. ;)

Getting hectic again. Great flying weather as it's been clear for 3 to 4 days in a row now and looks like we are going to have good weather still for atleast a day or so. I'm looking forward for some more air combat above Lae.

Looks like Ross made a mistake (care to comment Ross?) and for some reason left New Orleans at Noumea harbour already badly damaged. 6 torps later it sunk. 40 points of score to me and I'm happy for that.

No air acitivity around Lae, seems Ross'es pilots started to complain about being shot down all the time and demanded some R&R which Ross gave them. Too bad, all my squadrons at Lae are now 80+ EXP and they would gladly have a few EXP points more. Captured USN/RAAF pilots are also great fun for my troops at Lae because they scream like girls when burned with hot iron.

Admiral DadMan -> When, When, WHEN? (1/8/2003 5:10:10 AM)

What is the date of the game turn?

derwho -> (1/8/2003 2:30:42 PM)

Early June ´42, like maybe the 10th or so. I'll check it for you when I get home.

derwho -> (1/10/2003 12:41:04 AM)

Ross formed a CV-TF from his two damaged carriers at Townsville and started to move it towards Brisbane just off the Great Barrier Reef. Again, my excellent scouting ability was able to monitor this move and I sent a few CSs & AVs to hunt him down. Yorktown caught four hits destroying AA mounts and causing widespread panic among the crew. Walke was leaving Brisbane harbour unescorted and caught two hits from my Daves. It's reported that the crew hoisted a white flag after the attack by my brave pilots.
The flag was machinegunned from my Daves.

Bax -> (1/10/2003 12:54:49 AM)

Drwho, aren't you worried about getting nailed by his LB's on the East coast of Australia? How close did your TF's get to them?

In my battle with Toro-san, that crafty little devil keeps hugging the barrier reef between Cairns and Cooktown, making me wary of getting close enough to attack him with my CV TF that is in the area. Part of me wants to rush right in and force a battle, yet the thought of his LB's getting a crack at my CV's makes me balk.

derwho -> (1/10/2003 12:59:52 AM)

UV has this feature that I'm not quite sure is realistic. You can see which base has aircraft in it and which does not. Ross doesn't have any aircraft in bases south of Townsville so raiding him a few hexes away from Brisbane is quite safe. ;D

wobbly -> (1/13/2003 8:49:35 AM)

A CS can fly it's planes while on the move but the AV's need a base and supplies - where the hell are you flying from?

derwho -> (1/13/2003 5:49:33 PM)

Trade secrets.. ;)

derwho -> (1/15/2003 7:52:52 PM)

Action packed turn that needs some explaining. I formed a few fast transport TF's to send troops to Efate Porte Vila and Lugainville. Landed troops in Lugainville nicely while covered by Thunderstorm-weater. From the blue comes Ross'es Air Combat TF and scores hits on my FT-TF headed for EPV, luckily only one DD caught hits and was not damaged badly:

As can be witnessed, Ross has received CV Hornet as reinforcements. He needs it badly because CVs Yorktown and Lexington are damaged to some degree, rendering them useless for heavy combat operations. Fighters from Lex and York seem to be stationed at PM as can be witnessed from the following AAR:

derwho -> (1/19/2003 10:18:49 PM)

The IJN steamroller (as Ross says) in rolling again. Didn't have time to posta AAR last turn but basically Ross launched a carrier strike against my forces now residing nice and cosy at Louganville. 5 of my worthy troops got killed. I launched a massive airstrike against shipping in PM harbour, scoring 6 hits on a AO and nothing else. ;(

Ross is starting to hurt at PM as less and less fighters are flying CAP and his airfield is at approx 45% damage so I'll have it closed down soon enough, I'd say in about 2 turns.

I also scored a few lucky hits on SS Gato and sunk it off Gili Gili.

A few words on our current situation. I'm leading nicely with 5629 points, Ross having 3254. I've sunk 43 allied ships, including quite a few heavy and light cruisers (5 in all) and about 8 DD's, four minesweepers, 2 subs, and a pile of other shipping. Ross has sunk only 15 IJN ships, the best of which is CL Tatsuta, the rest are mostly AK's and AP's.

Ron Saueracker -> Disgusted silence? (1/19/2003 11:47:24 PM)

Ross is rather quiet lately...;)

Grotius -> (1/20/2003 3:26:25 AM)

A question for drwho. It looks like you're using CV aircraft as well as LBA to bomb PM. Do you worry about losing too many precious dive- and torpedo-bombers that way? Must the IJN bomb PM this way, or could you achieve your objective by first closing the airfield with Naval bombardment?

derwho -> (1/20/2003 4:30:41 PM)

It could be done that way also, but I have my reasons for closing it down with aircraft. I'll comment this later when revealing my reasons won't compromise my operational plans. Thanks for your interest.

Ross made a good move. He also has the ability to restore more than 50%/day of his airport at PM which is slightly more than I was anticipating but not something that can't be dealt with.

He's just demonstrating that 1000lb bombs work much better than 30kg bombs when attempting to sink ships :D

PM airfield damaged 97%. Less and less fighters are showing up for CAP as can bee seen from this thread.

I'm still holding Luganville and as I'm a evil player I ofcourse mined it. Ross tried to either shift troops there or maybe bombard it but with no luck, two DD's spotted mines and CA Portland hit one. ;) Anyone with a clear idea on how much damage does a mine do typically to a USN CA?

thantis -> (1/25/2003 1:08:14 AM)

Depends on the class - but I usually see about 15 - 20 Sys, 20 - 30 Flt & 15 - 30 Fire (but sometimes none too). For a warship, its usually not enough to make me go away - as I've got plenty of ships (on the US side) to replace it.

I got reports that SDB Dauntlesses are spotting ships near GG.

I was keeping my CV-TF in a position more or less N-NW of PM. So I moved it closer to GG (approx E of PM) to be able to intercept anything that Ross is possibly moving towars GG or PM.

We'll, Ross had CV Hornet there.

Hornet launches an airstrike against my bombardment TF returning from a nightly raid against PM.

For some reason, propably I did something as I've never seen anything like it before - nearly all my fighters in the CV-TF ware flying Sweep!! For reasons unknown to me, even though flying sweep, they didn't sweep. Strange enough but one CV sunk so I don't really care as long as this doesn't happen again.. ;D

Hiya drwho,

Good reading. One question for you: are those Claudes based on your CVs? Do they ever do anything useful?

mogami -> LRCAP/Sweep (1/26/2003 2:34:51 AM)

Hi, When you reduce the percentage of aircraft from 100 (LRCAP)
the mission does not go to Escort but to sweep. You have to reset the mission back to escort.
