The theater is shamefully under represented, especially in a tactical scale.

Equally under represented: operational scale.

Games I'd like to see:

WWII Pacific, emphasizing operational land combat, with abstracted but suitably detailed air & naval combat on the side, covering, in detail: Burma 1942; Burma 1944-45; Burma 1942-1945; Malaysia 1942; Singapore 1942; Luzon 1942; Bataan 1942; Luzon 1945; Leyte 1944; Liberation of the Philippines 1944-1945; China War 1937-1945; Papua/New Guinea 1942-1945; Guadalcanal 1942-43; New Georgia 1943; Bougainville 1943; Solomons 1942-43; hypothetical invasion of Australia 1942-43 (kind of like Operation Sea Lion); the larger land battles (not just Marine invasions) on Saipan, Guam etc. 1944; Liberation of the DEI 1945; Iwo Jima 1945 (at a lower level of detail, but not tactical); Okinawa 1945; hypothetical invasions of Japan 1945; and so on. Not more air/naval games with abstracted land combat on the side; rather vice versa. (TOAW is just inadequate to the task, and its several scenarios covering just a few of these conflicts are old, outdated, unavailable, and/or were never really good to begin with.)

A rich vein of gaming topics, never seriously mined.

For WWII squad level combat, the old warhorse SPWaW (Enhanced Version) is all you need ...

What does SPWaW stand for, and where can I get a look at this game?
Is there a website?

Steel Panthers World at War. And every ... ageing [:D] ... wargamer wants a remake ...

Thanks for the links, and I can see why SPWaW needs a makeover, but apparently the engine is still playable.

Honestly, I don't mind the early-90s graphics, but the SOUND of SPWaW is unbelievable. The Enhanced version has added many great weapons and effects sounds, plus a few extra music files. Heck, I've customized my game to the point that when I open it, I hear the USMC Battle Hymn. If that doesn't get one into the mindset for a Pacific battle, I don't know what else does.

How does that go now? "Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun, Here they come zooming to meet out thunder, At 'em boys give 'er the gun"?

Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

oh wait! [:'(]

See most everyone knows that the marines and army were just delaying action tropps. But, most everyone knows it was the Airforce that won the war. Hiroshima? Nagasaki anyone? [:D]

I have to agree here. sound and music are much overlooked and SP was truely awesome in that respect. I haven't played the game in years because of the graphics [:(] but I still can remember the sound of shells ricocheting of my tanks. Ka-boom (nailbiting splitsecond) ... ka-ching! Thank god survived yet another round.
Well they are remaking Shadowland and Wasteland ... so why not one day SP hmm?

vonRocko -> RE: Pacific War (3/1/2013 2:11:52 PM)

This thread made me want to play SP again, but it don't seem to run on my win7, the graphics are all messed up. How are you guys getting this to work on win7? It is one of my favorite games and I paid big bucks for it from matrix. I see they still sell it at a premium price, but it doesn't seem to work. Any advice? Thanks.

I have the same problem. Why not make a updated version of this game?
