In most cases one or two shots at an unknown spot will solicit a scream if there is an enemy unit there and it is likely suppressed. Never move adjacent to a spot with a question mark before shooting at it a couple of times.Once an enemy unit is suppressed, it cannot shoot at a unit that you move adjacent to it. If you shoot two or three shots into a square without a response, it is likely that there is no one there. Most infantry will not shoot at tanks more than two hexes away, so remember that your fire is more powerful the closer you are. So typically you move a tank or a halftrack two or three hexes away and fire a couple of shots into the cover, and listen for a response. There are a few exceptions to the above; one of them is when there is a long row of question marks along a road. Clearly you do not usually have time to test each one, so you have to guess which ones are likely to hold enemy infantry and take a chance with the cheapest unit you can afford to lose. Using the scout command can also help. Also note that the enemy normally will not place units in each of the possible spots, so after you have flushed one out, there may not be any more.
