jonny211 -> Jonny211 VS Jay Doubleyou - mid game AAR. (3/8/2013 2:25:04 PM)

Hi all,

As Bonners game has ended and we're halfway through ours I'll try my first AAR.

We're on V1.05 and like our previous game we're playing without the dismissal rule so the carnage continues long enough for Stalingrad to be taken. As in our first game (and in my game vs Bonners) if the Germans advance in the north it's no longer a contest so we have a gentlemans (our moustachioed dictators if you prefer) rule not to advance much past Voronezh.

However I am playing the Germans as if the dismissal rule were active, using more time cards to build up a reserve of PP.

The AAR starts at the end of August. Rostov has not long fallen and the two sides will soon be facing each other across the Don near Stalingrad. 5th TA made an appearance in the north but escaped to parts unknown, i think the panzers came off worse during those fights. Also in a stroke of buffoonery I've failed to capture Sevastopol so far but the forces there will be destroyed soon.

In the first screenshot Russians south of Rostov come under attack and group to the south east become encircled... I haven't sent many tanks to the Caucasus as I expect to meet 5th TA near Stalingrad again.

To the NW of S'Grad XXXX Panzers push east to remove the Russians from the knuckle of the Don

Always looking for tips, so I'd be interested to hear how you took Rostov and whether you got the points for it. Was it a direct assault or did you flank it?

Hiya Bonners,

To be honest it was a mess and very costly but I got the points after using the more time card twice. To the west I sent a division into the swamp hex next to the sea with the intention of taking the town to the west but then found that was too tough. I think I crept down the rail line from the north east but I had to clear the hills to the north and the open ground all the way east to Konstantinskaya before I could start throwing troops into it.

Most of the German divisions were down to 50% or less in the end but I made a fresh Romanian army with all of the incoming Romanian reinforcement units to attack from the north east. I used all of the heavy arty units from Sevastopol to keep a barrage up as well as heavy bombing.

Next time I might try just screening Rostov from the west and concentrating on crossing the Don at Konstantinskaya and driving south... mind you I think that was my plan this time too but got lost along the way.

Here's turn 33. Panzer Divisions cross the Don before the bridge is taken and are supplied by air for a few turns, luckily the VVS is nowhere to be seen or has been shot up on the runways.

In the south the Germans have run out of steam.

Turn 35, the end of August and beginning of September. I think there's no chance of capturing Stalingrad or Krasnodar on time so I'll be eating into my VP reserves.

NW and SW of Stalingrad the advance continues.

Turn 39. Mid September, in the Caucasus a group of armoured divisions intend to head south and cut off the massed Russian infantry divisions from their supplies, bridge bombing near Aramvir supports this.

NW of Stalingrad we've taken Frolowo a couple of turns ago but hang back for and counter attack.

Turn 40, and a group of Divisions appear north of Frolowo... a couple of ZG units are sent to recon the hexes and 5th TA is revealed along with AA units. All Stukas are sent up to unleash fiery death on the T34's. My units north of the Don and south of Frolowo pull back a couple of hexes ready for the onslaught.

Meanwhile I've taken a 20VP hit for not taking Krasnodar and Stalingrad, and have until 2nd October for Stalingrad and only 30th September for Krasnodar, only 9 turns for the latter.

Turn 41. 5th TA pull back a few hexes but recon flights seek them out and they're bombed again. In the far NW I attacked the town last turn and this turn a few more Russian units are seen.

The carnage in front of Stalingrad continues.
