Jonathan Pollard -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/7/2013 9:33:48 PM)

A long time ago I designed a Chinese Civil War scenario for TOAW I, maybe it still is available for download here: http://www.the-strategist.net/RD/scenarii/the-operational-art-of-war-scenario-49-Civil-War-In-China I do not know if my scenario is compatible with the latest version of TOAW.

I based the ground unit OOB on the OOB used in the Chinese Civil War boardgame published in the Wargamer #10: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/47886/chinese-civil-war?size=large

My scenario has a very accurate air OOB which I found at the US Army War College Library in Carlisle, PA, for both the KMT and the single bomber the Reds had in July 1946 when defectors flew a bomber to Yenan. My naval OOB is very accurate too. There is an official history of the civil war in Chinese published by the Taiwan government, I think I managed to get hold of that but not knowing Chinese I found only the maps to be of some benefit.

I also included the USMC units which were in China in 1946, including an armor unit. Because my scenario was at the corps and army level, I did not give separate armor units to the KMT.

As for the USSR, from what I remember they did not provide much support for the Reds because they didn't want to lose their position as the dominant Communist superpower. It was only after it became clear the Reds would win that aid was substantially increased.

was curious if you have the OOB for U.S. units in China during the civil war and also were U.S. forces involved in the early stages of the civil war or not at all. I did read where there were 50,000 USMC personal and 100,000 US Army personal stationed at strategic sites through out the country. I did not know if this was accurate or not so did not put U.S. forces inside China.

Jonathan Pollard -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 2:46:46 AM)

I know that my scenario has a very accurate OOB for the USMC in China, I got it from an official history of the USMC at the Army War College library. My scenario is still available for download at the link I provided, but you need to register. Unfortunately I can't find my disk for TOAW Wargame of the Year edition which I used to create the scenario so I can't tell you the OOB. Maybe someone else who reads this and has TOAW I Wargame of the Year edition can load my scenario and tell you the USMC OOB. The USMC was purely defensive when it was there. I know there was at least one incident where a unit was attacked by Reds (maybe it was the armor unit) and several Marines were killed. TOAW Wargame of the Year (Vol. 1) is available for sale at Amazon.com for $8.95 in case it's worth it to you to see my scenario yourself.

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 3:23:29 AM)

i've started playing this a bit and i do not know how the Communists are going to win this currently without Soviet intervention of some sort. as of this moment, KMT forces have broken through in a portion of the northern front. It is a matter of time before CPC forces are outflanked I'm thinking.

i guess i can cheat and add 3 CPC tank brigades and more arty units cause as it stands now or at least in my opinion the CPC has no chance of victory

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 3:39:37 AM)

i have the new matrix TOAW III so do you think this may work with the new version, if so then I may try and see. I also still have the original TOAW 1st version but it does not work on XP or windows 8, unless you know of a way around this for XP that is

Jonathan Pollard -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 4:16:40 AM)

There's supposed to be a scenario conversion tool for converting old scenarios to TOAW III, maybe you could try that:

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 4:42:43 AM)

so then do you suggest i add some USMC units and if so, then what size should those units be brigade, regiment or lower. when non active units are in an allied country and are attacked, that does not count towards the declaring war event which then activates said regime, wish it was programmed that you cannot attack a neutral country even if those units are in a allied country which is currently at war.

Jonathan Pollard -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/8/2013 10:36:09 AM)

Feel free to copy the USMC setup I have in my scenario. I used different unit sizes because different sizes were deployed in different places. I made them static, but can't remember whether they are permanently static or become activated if attacked. I don't have the Advanced Tactics game yet so I can't say how to best handle activation of USMC in that game.

Have you tried running the original TOAW in Windows XP using XP's Windows 98 compatibility mode? To do that, you right click on the TOAW launcher icon, click on 'properties', click on the 'compatibility' tab, and then choose Windows 98. If Windows 98 doesn't work, you could try Windows 95.

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/9/2013 10:24:02 PM)

i never did try installing the first TOAW onto my computer using XP. I did have the one which worked with XP, but had to have a patch in order for the location names to show that is until i dropped the CD and broke it. I now have TOAW III matrix version, but do not really like it all that much, actually like ATG more than TOAW III

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/11/2013 2:25:36 AM)

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/11/2013 11:09:09 PM)

Thanks, I think that might be what caused the issue, now have to start the play test all over again...... :(

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (5/15/2013 11:49:01 PM)

this scenario is finished with the exception of more events being added. I have asked Ernie for help in this area as I'm programming challenged. One of the events I would like to do is a ceasefire event that any nation at war will be able to play which will reset their diplomatic status back to peace. This will be card driven, and the chance of success will be a %, also the ceasefire event can be used more than once.

Say Communist China is taking a beating and uses the cease fire card, they succeed and a cease fire is declared. now say after several turns they have built themselves backup and declare war again against KMT.

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (6/20/2013 11:57:22 PM)

this scenario has been delayed as it is not where i want it yet.

Khanti -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (2/15/2014 6:39:09 PM)

Any news? Ready and uploaded somewhere?

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (2/15/2014 7:43:08 PM)

not yet, but it is in the pipeline to be posted soon......

lion_of_judah -> RE: CHINESE CIVIL WAR 1946-49 (1/19/2015 3:41:23 PM)

was wondering if you still have this map for TOAW and if so, would you be able to save it into TOAW III format for me. Would greatly appreciate it, thanks
