War in the West is using a different technology for maps so Jison's work/technical approach cannot be (easily) be transferred, but ...

Lot's of praise in the thread. Are there any cons to using this?

I love the maps. Very beautiful but I prefer the original counters. I can't see the soft factors very well and I miss the movement triangles.

Can the original counters be used in lieu of Jisons?

There is no in game switch unless you are using a program like mod manager. You just overwrite Jison's art with the counters you want - they are located in the Dat/Art/Unit folder and titled Counter*x*.tga The full set has 6 files to allow for different zoom levels.
