MKSheppard -> Legality of using SPWAW encyclopedia graphics to update SPWW2 encyclopedia Graphics? (1/15/2003 3:00:17 PM)

I've been doing a little project on my
own time using the SPWAW 7.1+
unit silhoullete LBM pictures
to update the black and white LBM
pictures of units in SP CAMMO's
SP:WW2...

It looks good after I converted it to
SPWW2's palette, and I'm wondering
who did the work originally for SPWAW...

Would it legally be possible to distrubute this "WW2 Color" mod
widely, or would this be violating
Matrix' Games' Rights on the
graphics of SPWAW?

This is a very touchy subject, I too am doing a rendition of SpWW2, using graphics from WAW, and pics from H2H, BUT, I don't plan to distribute it to public domain. I was going to release my whole bitmap archive to the folks at SPWW2 to use, and gave it up, as I would have to worry about anything that was technically belonging to Matrix, being included in the copywrited Megacampaigns. I would write either David Heath, or Paul Vebber for definite word on this, if you are just doing it for yourself, fine, but might have to worry about it for public domain, although I've seen my icons in SPWW2, and we have some of there's (modified) in our game. Hope this is of help to you.

MIke - What do you use for a lbm reader - conversion utility? I seem to remember there was one some time ago but can't rememvber where to find it. Lbm won't load in Paint or Photoshop without conversion, not that I know of.

Paint Shop Pro will work. You have to do some palette transferring though.

Just out of curiosity, how are you doing this? Again, there was an explanation of this some time back, it would do us all well to be refreshed.

Thanks,

Bing

Bing,
I use Irfan-view v3.07 (1999 version) as the regualr graphics display program on my system and it reads LBMs fine. In a thread last year I posted a couple jpg's of LBMs and Gmenfan asked what program I was using to read them...he tried the newest version of Irfan-view and said it didn't work. I put v3.07 here if you're interested; just unzip it into an empty folder, and under options-properties make sure IFF/LBM is checked.

Fred Chandla's ShpEd has the palette, and the help file says its in a form that can be used by PSP.

From the help file:
Palettes used by ShpEd are in the ascii format used by PaintShop Pro. If you need a palette for a game other than those above you will probably find it in a file with the lbm extension and you can get it by loading that file into PSP and saving the palette. Some expert users edit the palette files to achieve special purposes. This is especially useful for the flashing colors. If you use Notepad and WIN98 you may need to give the file the pal extension after editing.

I use Paintshop Pro 6, and I have it so I just double-click on an lbm in explorer, and it opens, I scan pictures from books, etc, then open an existing LBM, resize my new pic to somewhat correct size, then copy/paste to the existing LBM, so I don't have to even fool around with palettes, takes me all of less than 5 minutes from scan to final LBM to make one from scratch!! You can configure PSP 6 to open virtually ANY image file, so far I haven't found any I can't open/edit.:D

Grenadier -> (1/16/2003 6:12:11 AM)

It won't open shape files:D

Yep. Earlier when there were some broken pics in SPWaW I fixed them myself...colours were very skewed. Back then I just loaded one existing image and copied it's palette to the broken image. After that all worked fine...but then, you've done a bit more of these things than I :)

David Heath -> (1/17/2003 10:53:30 AM)

Hi Mark

We ask that you please do not do this as this would cause all kind of copyright issues as well as some other issues. Thank you for asking first.

David Heath -> (1/20/2003 4:47:14 AM)

It would seem Mr Sheppard post was nothing more them a setup attempt to make Matrix and Myself look bad. Mr. Sheppard has now posted all over the net that I claimed to own copyrights on public domain material in SPWaW. As you can read from my post and Mr. Sheppard post that I never claimed that.

The meaning of my response was there would be copyright issues because many gamers donated their time to help us and I can not speak for them nor was I giving permission to pass their work or public domain work to whoever asks. I never claimed copyright over public domain pictures (my reply is below as well). It should be also noted the Mr. Sheppard once he received my email and/or saw my post/reply on the forum here never attempted to get back to me. Mr. Sheppard did start posting his BS all across the net that I am claiming to have copyrights on public domain material.

Since I consider this a direct attack on myself, Matrix and to be publix I felt I must respond. Below you find the one and only email from Mr. Sheppard and my only response. I am not going to post any more on this subject and I Thank you for your time.

David Heath

Subject: Question on the legality of using graphics from SP:WaW....

Hello, my name is Ryan Crierie, and as a small project on my free time, I have been converting the color encyclopedia LBMs from your Steel Panthers: World at War 7.1 game into LBMs that work in SPCAMMO's SP:WW2 game.

I've asked this question on your on-site forum, and I was referred to you by Mike "Warhorse" Amos as the man to ask to get a definite answer on the legality of the project.

I ask this because I would like to be able to distribute the LBMs as
a "WW2 Color" add-on for SP:WW2, or to see the LBMs become part of the next release of SP:WW2, but I don't want to violate your intellectual property rights OR cause even more bad blood between the two Steel Panthers camps (Matrix vs SPCammo).

Hi Ryan

We ask that you please do not do this as this would cause all kind of copyright issues as well as some other issues. Thank you for asking first.

Tombstone -> (1/20/2003 11:23:53 AM)

Holy crap! I understand that some people have a lot of time on their hands, but man... you figure you could do something valuable with it. Some people are so misplaced. I don't mean to make light of this situation or trivialize it, as false accusations are unfair and super frustrating, but it's just like those kids who cheat while playing online games... there's that deep lack of satisfaction that they're desperately trying to find. They think that if they could only destroy something that they'd feel powerful. Too bad they can't even really do that...

Tomo

Goblin -> (1/20/2003 12:17:37 PM)

I think Tombstone meant 'scumbag'.:D

You can trust us to defend Matrix wherever things like this may be found, David.

If I see something like this, I will point out the truth.

Give them an inch and they'll take five miles, those who twist the truth for personnal gain really annoy me. Sorry for the bad apple.:mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:
