Ah the speed boat of the week.

Logged.

Absolutely. :) What I'm hoping we'll eventually see in the database is about four or five generic police/patrol boats to cover the hundreds of different but frequently almost interchangeable classes produced and used all around the world, even by countries with no other naval forces. We already have a few such classes, with the 7-m and 11-m RHIBs, but there are others that could be added. Maybe something like these four:

10-meter/10-ton <-- 1 x 7.62 machine gun
15-meter/20-ton <-- 2 x 7.62 machine gun
20-meter/35-ton <-- 2 x .50-cal guns, limited AAA capability
25-meter/60-ton <-- 2 x 20-mm. guns, limited AAA capability

These could also be used by criminals, revolutionaries, etc. I'd also like to see more variations on common civilian and commercial vessels that have been armed by criminals (or by companies trying to deal with pirates, etc.)

And, of course, I'd be happy to see as many of the specific models as can be added, if the data for them is available.

I'd also like to see a few more options for mobile ground units that might fit with rebels, mercenaries, criminals, etc. A few generic infantry sections or platoons with weapons like generic RPGs, 81-mm. mortars (only needs a crew of five, has a three-mile range, and can do put serious hurt on buildings, or ships--there is actually one infantry section like this in CWDB), and so on.

As you can see, I'm thinking in terms of how to better model various low intensity conflicts, where a few dozen heroes on small vessels face off against a few dozen bad guys, either right on the shore or in their own small vessels.

Hi Mark

Do you know that you can add and remove weapons, mounts and sensors in the editor? To a large extent these kinds of units are exactly why we added the functions.

Will add these to our to-do list but we do have a good deal in front of it.

Thanks!

Mike

First, thanks. I appreciate it.

Second, about editing weapons, etc., yes, absolutely. One reason I'm eager to see these smaller patrol boats added someday is that we have a lot of platforms in the databases for patrol vessels in the range of 100 to 500 tons, but far fewer in the range of, say, 20 or 30 or 50 tons. Many of these boats have better ranges (sometimes at the cost of lower top speeds) than the RHIBs; they are truly patrol vessels, meant to go out for a day or two at a time, rather than "interceptors." That's a difference that can be important in a scenario. Once we've got some of those platforms in the database, however, they can be used as a framework and tweaked by changing sensors and weapons. So I'd love to see, say, 15-, 20-, and 25-meter patrol boats, as generic platforms, in the same way that we already have the 7- and 11-meter RHIBs. Then they can be used to stand in, with a bit of tweaking, for dozens of actual classes of small patrol vessels around the world.

Speaking of that, here are a couple. All three could also be added as "generic" patrol boat models (e.g., "20-meter patrol boat (generic)," etc.). Again, these are all "just to get them in the queue," although I am definitely hoping to see them someday...

Thank you.

I posted this on the main forum in a thread about the geolocation capabilities of modern ESM systems, but I thought I would post it here too and request a db update. Based on the below links, would it be possible to modify or create these ESM systems to include range information: ALQ-218, ALR-94, ALQ-240(V)1, and "Rivet Joint ESM." The Rivet Joint would probably also require a new a/c version, as the only one currently in the db is good from the 1970s on - when single-aircraft geolocation would have been considered a total pipe dream!

quote:

Rivet Joint: http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/FactSheets/Display/tabid/224/Article/104608/rc-135vw-rivet-joint.aspx - “The Rivet Joint's modifications are primarily related to its on-board sensor suite, which allows the mission crew to detect, identify and geolocate signals throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.”

Combined with the ICAP III AN/ALQ-218 EW Receiver Suite, which provides precision passive radar threat detection, identification, precision geolocation and jammer control, the Growler will have unprecedented situational awareness.”

F-22A (Software Increment 3.1 fielded in 2012): http://www.defensenews.com/article/20111213/DEFSECT01/112130310/Final-F-22-Raptor-Rolls-Off-Production-Line - "This increment is designed to defeat air or surface threats in any threat environment; operational test and evaluation is nearly complete," Knuteson wrote. "So far, precision geolocation accuracy exceeds the requirement by 15%, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) map accuracy exceeds specifications by 55%...”

P-8A: http://globenewswire.com/news-release/2012/10/04/495140/10007233/en/Northrop-Grumman-s-Electronic-Support-Measures-System-for-the-P-8A-Poseidon-Receives-Official-Nomenclature.html - The AN/ALQ-240(V)1 electronic support measures system will provide a significant increase in capability for operations in the complex maritime battlespace. The adaptive tuning, precise direction finding and geolocation capabilities of the ALQ-240(V)1 will allow P-8A aircrews to detect and identify radar and other electronic threats to the aircraft and Navy vessels.”

Second this. Most U.S. UAVs and manned ISR aircraft have geolocation capabilities today.

Finland Hamina-class is without SONAR and ASW-weapons:

The sonar suite includes a Simrad Subsea Toadfish active high-frequency search and attack sonar, and a Sonac/PTA towed array sonar. Not sure which model it is, but it can be added same Toadfish sonar in Rauma-class SS2400 Toadfish.
1 ×  rail for depth charges or mines (depth charges are normal load)
1 x Sonac/PTA towed array sonar

Also speed for Hamina is 30+ knots. I know that they can go much faster with their state of the art water propulsion jet. Adding few knots wont do bad. True high speed is classified, but 35 knots can be easily achieved. Older Rauma class can go at least 35 knots too, which Hamina replaced.

http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/haminaclass/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamina-class_missile_boat

Hämeenmaa minelayer is without mines. From 2009+ new mine can be added: Sea Mine 2000 - bottom, Acoustic & target Discrimination. Older version use bottom mines.
4 × rails for 100-150 mines

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A4meenmaa-class_minelayer

Thanks!

No, no and no. Hamina doesnt have any ASW sensors. That faulty information been circling all over internet since 90s. Hamina only has ability to take depth charges and their use is controlled by other ships (like Rauma).

Katanpää-class MHC could be added thats newest class of ships in finnish navy.

EO DAS sensor apppears to be nonfunctional as of build 411. I could see that some fixes were applied to build 410 version to allow it to better represent it's real world functionalities(although I'd say that its detection range and update rate is still inadequate). So what was the change between the two builds?

I think I have mentioned this before, but Sea Giraffe 150 HC still lacks a surface search ability. Now LCS 2 is left without a surface search radar which is totally laughable.

I see the RBS70 missile variants are listed as RB 70, it was almost impossible to find it (also it's not present the RBS90 twin pedestal mount, because the performances very probably employing the RBS70 Mk2 missile, employed by Sweden 1993-2004).

EDIT: Don't mean on it, sorry, I see RBS is the System and is listed as "Facility", RB (Robot) is only the missile. Thanks and go forward!

Don't worry, for my next batch of never-were requests I do have links. Sorry about not getting any for the 747 bomber/missile carrier, I couldn't find many exact proposals.

A-6F Intruder:
Upgraded A-6. Cancelled in favor of the A-12 and then not revived due to post-USSR budgets. (Ironically, the most exact specifications I found were in Russian)

A-6F Intruder (in Russian)

F-117B (Land based) and A/F-117X (Carrier based):
Upgraded F-117.

F-117 Variants

And from Russia, the Il-102, a ground attack plane with an anachronistic tail-gun system passed up in favor of the Su-25.

LCS Will have Longbow Hellfire instead of Griffin IIB as interim ASuW weapon, for now at least. However I'm really worried about it's ingame lethality against surface target due to the HEAT warhead type.

And I'm not sure about the status of the X-47B entry ingame. If it is meant to be a placeholder for UCLASS, I'd suggest removal for the time being. There's no firm info on it, we won't even know the preferred airframe for at least another year. That means some possible substantial change later on. X-47B itself was never meant to be operational.

No! Don't take our killer robots away! :)

Seriously, I'd argue it's better to have a guesstimate version of a future platform than nothing at all; one can always update the information as new data comes in. This way, it and other things like the Global Combat Ship can at least be used in scenario designs.

One issue in scenario design is that some political events are more plausible if you set them ten or fifteen years in the future (i.e., give the world enough time for things to really go to hell in a hand basket) but, of course, we have limited information on what might be in service five or six years down the line and which could be included in the scenario. Like the deployed X-47B (I think I suggested the database editors could use "MQ-47C Medusa" instead to distinguish it from the experimental version.) So, guesstimates on bleeding edge platforms are fine with me. It's better than not having them.

I'd like to register a couple of low-priority requests for New Zealand:

SH-2G(I) Seasprite

NZ has recently purchased ten of the SH-2G(A)s which were originally purchased by Australia but handed back to Kaman when the project was cancelled in 2008. Kaman has actually managed to make them work (with a less ambitious avionics fit, but still capable of operating Penguin missiles) and NZ will operate eight of them from its warships and use the other two as sources of spare parts. They're scheduled to enter service with the RNZAF between 2014 and 2016 and will replace the service's five SH-2Gs:
