Werezak -> Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/26/2013 5:26:21 AM)

Hello everyone,

I've made a user data file that uses Russian names for various Soviet weapons and units. Maybe you are making a WP oriented scenario for example, and want to add that extra immersion factor. In any case, feel free to use this in any way you want.

The changes:
AT-2 Swatter -> Falanga/Fleyta
AT-3 Sagger -> Malyutka
AT-4 Spigot -> Fagot/Faktoriya
AT-5 Spandrel -> Konkurs
AT-6 Spiral -> Shturm
AT-7 Saxhorn -> Metis
AT-8 Songster -> Kobra
AT-9 Spiral-2 -> Ataka-V
AT-10 Stabber -> Bastion
AT-11 Sniper -> Svir

(SAM weapon names. I made the best attempt to update unit names to match the existing style. e.g. MANPAD teams are named simply "Strela-2" instead of "9K32 Strela-2" and the S-300 static unit is named "S-300 SAM")
SA-2 Guideline -> S-75 Dvina
SA-3 Goa -> S-125 Neva
SA-4 Ganef -> 2K11 Krug
SA-6 Gainful -> 2K12 Kub
SA-7 Grail -> 9K32 Strela-2
SA-8 Gecko -> 9K33 Osa
SA-9 Gaskin -> 9K31 Strela-1
SA-10 Grumble -> S-300
SA-11 Gadfly -> 9K37 Buk
SA-13 Gopher -> 9K35 Strela-10
SA-14 Gremlin -> 9K34 Strela-3
SA-15 Gauntlet -> 9K330 Tor
SA-16 Gimlet -> 9K310 Igla-1
SA-18 Grouse -> 9K38 Igla
SA-19 Grison -> 9K22 Tunguska

AS-7 Kerry -> Kh-66
AS-9 Kyle -> Kh-28
AS-10 Karen -> Kh-25
AS-11 Kilter -> Kh-58
AS-12 Kegler -> Kh-25MP
AS-14 Kedge -> Kh-29

[Update: Renamed the 2500m range version of the Fagot ATGM to Faktoriya, fixed some minor errors. If anyone sees any other mistakes please let me know. I don't have a military background and am not an expert on these things.]

[Update: I've added a list of all the name changes.]

Good news. You can mod the names to your hearts content.

Bad news. You cannot change anything in the scenarios that came with the game. We locked those. There would be no way to control edited scenarios to the originals without doing that. The originals need to be kept in their original form for things like PBEM, etc.

Good Hunting.

OK, that is a little disappointing but I'll have to live with it I guess. Thanks for the response.

What kind of names were you looking at? What do you find weird about the names the scenarios currently have?

Good Hunting.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/26/2013 5:56:53 PM)

I used NATO reporting names for Soviet weapons.

Werezak -> RE: Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/26/2013 6:35:24 PM)

Part of the reason is that I'm not as familiar with NATO reporting names. For example, I find myself often having to stop and look up on Wikipedia that my units armed with SA-14 Gremlins are in fact carrying Strela-3s. While the game has the numbers available, it is easier for me to evaluate a unit's capabilities when I can recognize it's real world basis.

The other part is that I just plain like the native names better. It's hard to explain because it's a preference, but I'd much rather see Malyutka than AT-3 Sagger, for another example.

So, these aren't terrible issues, but preferences aside though, I'm sure sooner or later someone will want to tweak the capabilities of various units and will like to see how it affects the way scenarios play out. It would be nice to be able to export some of the default scenarios for offline play, since they are more polished than anything I have been able to throw together myself. I understand though that it depends on what you are comfortable doing.

Your units carrying SA-14 Gremlins are carrying SA-14 Gremlins. They are also, in fact, carrying Strela-3's. We had to call them something. There's a really good chance that most gamers that will play the game served in NATO and not the Warsaw Pact units. With that in mind, we went with the nomenclature that most gamers would recognize.

The reason they are more polished is simply that they've been played more.

I understand the reason you used NATO reporting names, that's not why I started this thread [;)]. I explained my issue with the default names as a direct response to your question.

Anyways I wanted to know if there was a convenient way to use names of my own preference in the existing scenarios, and it seems that there is not. I guess the only purpose of this thread now is for anyone, minority or not, who wants to use my data file. Though it looks like it's not going to be as useful to anyone without scenarios to go with it.

Mad Russian -> RE: Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/27/2013 2:36:47 AM)

Okay. Full circle then, there is no way to do it for the original scenarios. There is a way to do it for any scenario you make for yourself or anyone else that may want to use it.

Don't sell short any mods you create. There could be several out there that may want to use it for their own scenarios.

Good Hunting.

What if you edit the user data file then replace the main data file?

CapnDarwin -> RE: Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/27/2013 2:29:27 PM)

MikeAP,
If you replace a main OTS file the editor will see it as a user file. All scenario data is locked away in the scenario file so they can be self sustainable. We can see if there is a way to update names in the game like the new ability to load silhouettes after loading a scenario. A bit trickier since we would need to point to a data file first.

I will chat with the team and see if it is possible.

Werezak -> RE: Changing Weapon and Unit Names (10/27/2013 8:42:53 PM)

Mad Russian--

OK, sorry if there was a misunderstanding. I'm surprised how much attention you are giving this. I feel like you won't stop until I tell you that I am completely satisfied [;)].

Capn Darwin--

Again, I'm surprised to see this much response. Now I see how dedicated you both are to making sure that everyone is happy with your game. If it is anything difficult please don't trouble yourselves with it. I really appreciate your attention though.

Everyone's opinions, comments and issues are important to us.

On the other hand, we didn't intend to overwhelm you. Maybe, I've been playing the Russians a bit too long here.....[X(]

We are glad the game is playing well for you and appreciate your taking the time to make comments. The least we can do is answer your concerns.

Good Hunting.

Hahaha. Well, no harm done.

In Soviet Russia, scenarios mod you.
