Michael Wermelin -> Accuracy (3/2/2001 2:05:00 PM)

One thing that I have felt lacking through all SP history is the choice of buying larger formations, say a well balansed german Kampfgruppe of some kind. US army have the most well-built-up large formations, but I would like them even larger. If one could buy large formations from a list of well balanced and purposely different formations, then perhaps this could be a great way to get historically more accurate battles. It could also add to the PBEMs, making it harder to perform "power-gaming". For example a formation made for a meeting engagement could include one or two infantery companies, a recon company, some art. batteries, an airstrike section or two, maybe a armor platoon, etc ... in other words, a well balanced force and the possibility to make some choices and formations of different kinds depending on what kind of battle you are playing. Would it not be something? mandom mod och morske män

Ready made Combat Commands or Kampfgruppes that one could pick as a whole force in one click would be a great feature, Michael Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

yeah i agree, and if possible a choice for a real big map, so that recon units and supplie units get more important!! perhaps coming in v.5???

I also think that would be a very good idea ... Silvarius.

Scott Grasse's Buying guidleines are good pplace to start. We are limited by the OOB editor to company sized forces, except for some Russian exceptions http://slightning.thegamers.net/SP%20accessories/Spwawsg.zip

Understanding that the OOB limits the actual size of the force, would it be possible to create forces, similar to the US Combat Group, that have an organic mix of armor, infantry, AA, and support units? I usually create these in campaigns, but with the limited points allowed and the srtucture of some units, I have to modify what I want to what I can afford. Example: GE Kampfgruppe-2 platoons of PzGr infantry 2 platoons of armor (tanks or assault guns,depending on time frame) 1 platoon engineers (mech) 1 section(2) SPAA or like 1 section SP mortars All these units would be combined into one company-like unit for purchasing. However, as it stands, some nations OOBs do not have the partial forces available to buy. Also, due to point restrictions, you can't buy 2 complete platoons or armor, because there are 5 tanks per. If it were possible to reduce the number in the platoon (thereby reducing the overall cost), then both could be bought. But I don't think the force unit size should be changed. I know many people like the scale of SP3, with it's battalion-sized forces and large-scale maps; however, to do so in this game would require re-writing code, and re-drawing icons (per SP3 and it's multiple-vehicle-per-icon). Then it would become a different game, with different strategies and tactics required. After all, when you have 50 tanks vs. 15, losing 20% isn't as disastrous overall. I still remember playing SP3 with SP tactics, and wondering why it took longer for me to achieve the victory conditions. Instead of trying to protect every unit icon from destruction, I accepted that losses would occur, and started trying to concentrate them on certain units. To clarify, that meant that if a particular unit took fire and losses, but was still combat-effective, I "threw away" that unit (by forcing it to take successive fire and losses), until I could safely manuever other whole units into position. This is harder to do in SPWAW; if a tank gets hit and knocked out, that's one unit gone. In SP3, if one tank platoon unit got hit and lost one tank, the other 3 or 4 were still there, and could continue to operate. So I hope that the "Gods" at Matrix keep the squad-level idea in force. ------------------ The Motor Pool http://www.geocities.com/aurion_eq/index.html?976419304550 kmcferren@cvn.net

This is one of those issues that vary with what you are willing to give up to get it. The AI (admittedly not handling much of anything well) handles mixed formations poorly, with vehicles always tending to race ahead of the infantry and command and control difficulties emerge when playing human with C2 on. We have limited the official v5 OOBs to "like" units becasue these limitation were seen as detrimental. There is no desire to do anything other than SP1 scale units. EDITED: If one could buy large formations of purposely different formations, then perhaps this could be a great way to get historically more accurate battles. mandom mod och morske män
Ah yes whne denied the freedom to do something there is often the effort of how to get away with doing it any way. uhhmmmmm! well confusion says ... ooops yes, since there is an editor in the game and since the maps and other values will always come closer to giving the desired result of a closer to historical game (scen or other) if they are made by hand then clearly choose your own will still not suffice !!! Yes I know you mean the fast order vs the home cooked by mom or chef either one will still do the trick so ... Assign units to large formations and growing larger formations use snipers and other small units edit edit edit need an inexperienced unit that is large place a lower ranking soldier in charge -- we can work with what the game provides even if t does not igve it to us directly once you have a sarg leading an entire co or battalion and you are mment s away from saving the game to paly with command and control rules you now need only change the name of the leader to Cpt. Beverready Of course once the CC realism prefernce goes on that sarg will have troops tha the higher echelons will wonder if they will ever Beveready. MINDSPY that's right up there with Soviets playing like Soviets and American troops behaving like American Troops.

I think an option like this may help a less knowledgeable player (less knowledgeable about wwii or oob) to learn more about them. i also think that the fact that the us has this kind of formation is a good start, as it can easily give someone an idea of how to put a reasonable force together.....maybe this could be mentioned in a tutorial, or in the manual. -jedimessiah ------------------ "Karate means never having to say you're sorry" -E.
