capex_MatrixForum -> I'm not afraid of the moster, but... (11/13/2013 1:07:56 PM)

Hi all, I was playng WIF ten years ago, so i have some memory about the rules. Now, I just want to play at MWiF, here the question: wich is the best way to approach the aknoweledgement of the rules? I start simply reading manual 1, with a Lot of very useful suggestion how manage the game, but one must understand before the framework and some details of the rules (the core, at least). We have also very useful tool like tutorial, video and so on, but in your opinion, where start and how to go on?

I have in my mind the very useful "learn to play Advance squad Leader in 10 steps..."

Thanks all

Hi capex Hi Deetslayer

I am going to make a few suggestion for you considerations.

1- Dive into the game the rules coded by Steve will not allow you to make any mistakes.

2- Do the fast start Barbarossa first but a warning to you. The first chance you get after starting the game is to do a "save game as" call it Barbarossa 1941, call it Barbarossa xxx, call it "just testing" then everytime you play use those game saves not fast start any more. Players have already overwritten fast start by accident or so I have heard that.
Could be wrong.

In Barbarossa do land attacks start with one German infantry or Panzer against one or two Russians in a hex, to do so just slide the attacking unit onto the object hex and look at the gray line and see what the odds are then slide the next attacking unit onto the hex and watch the odds change. When the program calls for ground support throw in a few Stukas to aid the ground forces.

When I joined the beta team over a year ago I became very smug when I felt they needed a good sharp old time computer war game player to test MWIF. What I found out later was that they needed a total noobie to test the game the reason being if a newbie can play this game anybody can, needles to say the ego was severly damaged. [:@]

The good that you can take from that is that I do not know the rules but I can play this game even if I learned it by osmosis, is there a better way?

I am not saying in any way to not read the rule books just do both.

Experienced board game players have become rusty from not playing.

EG: You are invading an island in the Pacific and you do evething right, the invasion forces are in the right seabox loaded on their transports and you go to invade and you get an x over the hex your invading which means that hex cannot be invaded and you get upset and blame the program or whoever or whatever for your ills and woes, and bingo a light goes off about past board games and you realize that there is a storm in the landing area or you used up all your land move and you must have land moves left and no storm in the area to be able to invade, on and on.

If you have any particular question you want to ask I will be glad to help if it is a program malfunction then that is above my pay grade

Bo

I tried last night to load up Barbarossa and see what it was like. I remembered something about a fast start with all units already set up, so I figured I would give that a try for my first time.

I could not figure out how to load the fast start version. Given, I have not gone through very much of the text and interactive tutorials yet, so this may be in there.

One more question - as I was placing air units, I was getting messages, something like "This is the last L4 unit you can place". It said it was due to something I cannot remember. What does this mean? I think I also got different L numbers. I was still able to continue placing more air units down, though. And, it seemed like I was able to place air units wherever I wanted, and not just in cities or airbases? Is this correct, or was I doing something wrong?

Yup, if you look under the AC counters, you will see something like LND3, LND4 etc, and some numbers given as x/y. y is the total amount of that AC type (LND3, LND4 etc) you have in your pool, while x is the number of that unit type you get to set up on the map at the start of the game.

Hi jglazier,

I'm completely new and learning the game from scratch just as you are. If I'm not mistaken, upon setting up your air units in the different areas, you have a limited amount of certain types of air units to choose. For example, L2 3/5 means you can only choose 3 out of the 5 for placement. "L" is the designation in the game for bomber and the "2" after the L is the build cost of that unit. So, L3's are Bombers with 3 build cost and are typically a stronger unit. Fighters on the other hand are designated "F" and Naval air units "N". Hopefully that helps you out. Btw, we're neighbors! I live in L.A., work in brentwood though.

[sm=sign0006.gif] Please gentlemen I am trying to warn players about overwriting the Fast starts and giving a few suggestion, I would appreciate it if you would stay on topic at least for this post. Not trying to be argumenative but if you overide the fast start game you might have to reload the whole program if you happen to like fast start.

Thank you

Bo

Thank you terje and FightinJoe!! Very, very helpful. I live in the Northern California Brentwood. East of San Francisco. Who's crazy idea was it anyway to give two cities the same name in the same state? [:)]

Also, my posting was on topic. I asked how to load the fast start. I was not able to find it. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to load the fast start version of Barbarossa.

And, my other question was about Barbarossa, and setting up units for my first play.
