marc420 -> Fighter pilots out for joy-rides (1/24/2003 1:29:10 PM)

I've seen something odd happen a couple of times in the turn resolution.

I'm playing the IJN in Scn 19. On a couple of occasions, to rest a Zero squadron I've reduced the CAP % down to like 20. The mission is set to Escort.

During the turn resolution, I suddenly see the Zero's fly over to an enemy base like PM. It looks like a bombing raid. But nothing actually happens in terms of combat reports.

The next turn, after I say WTF, I go and check the squadron. First I check to make sure I really had it on Escort instead of Sweep, and it is on Escort.

And this time I looked at the Fatique, and its down to 13, so the squadron doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. So I guess this isn't more than an annoying oddity.

I suppose it means my fighter pilots are now rested, and with CAP% low for the turn, they are bored with nothing to do. So they head out for an unauthorized joy-ride in their planes.

This is disconcerting to high command, so we are looking to see if other Admirals are seeing the same thing, and also what we can do to stop it.

Our current plan is to expand the officer's club on Shortland Island, and make sure there are at least three available ladies for each pilot. Maybe that will give them something to do on the R&R days besides taking our planes for a joy-ride. :)

I wouldn't bother.

I tried the the same thing with a Japanese base at Nevea. The standard R&R wasn't working, so a pre-fab bath house was shipped in, complete with a bunch of kimono-clad bath scrubbers and a floating bar. The intent was to stop the unauthorised flights by supplying the pilots with women and booze (I&I).

Didn't quite work out as the attraction of joining the mile-high club was too much for the pilots to resist. I&I turned into F&F. Reports of silk knickers and empty saki bottles falling from the sky were coming in from all over the New Hebrides.

Yes, I have seen a squadron set to escort/CAP fly off to attack targets of opportunity (effectively, they were performing sweeps). Never been able to track the exact circumstances of its occurrence. From memory, it normally involves a single squadron set to escort, the attack occurs in the afternoon and normally takes the form of (what appears to be) a fighter sweep. Generally, I can ignore it but every now and then it leads to the destruction of a fighter squadron through its attempt to engage a target that has heavy CAP protection.

Worse than this is what happens in the afternoon phase for a fighter squadron that has been ordered to strafe a particular enemy airbase. While the morning will normally go to plan, the afternoon strike's destination often seems to have been the result of a map, a blindfold and several crates of saki. I've had some of my top squadrons ruined by interpreting an order of "conduct a sweep of Luganville airbase at 100' " as "and then in the afternoon, go find the strongest American surface combat TF in the area and conduct a strafing run with the objective of establishing the ROF of the 40mm AA ship mount".

The word "bug" comes to mind (amongst others).

Yes, I posted a bout this a while back. Fighter pilots going off on their own - and never finding a target. But your results are different from mine - my guys get fatigued each time they try this and it ticks me off because then i have to stand down my bombers a turn or two (or three) while the fighter jocks rest.:)
