Yorktown, Washington and Portland put to sea for Pearl. Yorktown will be taking delivery of a shiny new Dauntless counter shortly [:)]

The CW finally get 2 TRS in position to take a couple of long-range fighters to the Med. Meanwhile the newly arrived HMS Implacable gets into position to accept an Albacore unit. Unfortunately for the Royal Navy, they could do with a few more fighters and less torpedo bombers but....

Bomber Command get to do their stuff over Essen, but a 3 is thrown and causes no trouble for the workers (or anyone else) in the city.

Just an observation and a query.

In both my AAR's the US Entry appears to be very slow (certainly in historical terms). Is this normal or has there been some unfortunate dice?

Just curious as to the "average" time it takes to get the US in (assuming the Axis player is not overly aggressive in the first half of the war).

Anyways...

Back to the Axis, and the Germans are making final preparations for Barbarossa - which they will launch this turn if they get a break in the weather - or next turn if not.

Pending these momentous events in the east, its back to attacking the CW in the Mediterranean.

The Luftwaffe and the RA take up the same positions as before (except one Condor moves to the 4 sea box for surprise avoidance reasons), although the much depleted submarine arm of the RM do not put in an appearance this time...

The Axis try and initiate combat in the Western Mediterranean. Until their reinforcements arrive, the RAF are going to be heavily outnumbered in the skies. They decide to sit this one out in the hope that the dice roll unkindly for the Axis....

...they do - a seven is rolled and the German / Italian search is unsuccessful.

The weather takes a turn for the worse - Barbarossa looks unlikely this turn..

The Allies continue strengthening their defences / building up where they can.

New Jersey, South Dakota and Northampton are the latest additions to the Pacific Fleet.

The Italians fly an SM.79 into the Western Mediterranean and the Axis attempt to initiate combat. Once again the CW pass up on the opportunity to intervene.

The Axis find the convoys this time. They can use all their surprise points to increase their naval combat column. The CW lose two and have two aborted for no loss.

The convoys are ordered to scatter (abort) and the fighting ends.

Great I've missed the declare war on the Soviet Union stage...

I know I'm a dingbat, and concentration has never been my strongpoint, but it would be good if there was some kind of ability to go back if missed...

Oh well, its done now so no use crying over spilt milk. There are no CW convoys in the Western Mediterranean to attack so the Axis has two choices a) attack those in the Eastern Med or try a port attack against Malta.

Given the problems finding the convoys so far, the Axis go for a Maltese approach.

Oh...

Despite having three aircraft to one, and only a one point dis-advantage in the front fighter, the Italians are actually at a 4.7:5.0 dis-advantage. Well having the advantage didn't help the Germans in France so maybe the same will apply to the RAF in Malta....

Round 1:

13 (AC) The CW player has to choose a bomber to clear through - they choose the SM.79.
13 (No effect)

Round 2:

15 (DA) The Axis player has to abort the front fighter or bomber. They take a chance and abort the fighter.
12 (AC - so No Effect)

The air superiority rises to 4.3:5.0 but the Axis stick around.

Round 3:

6 (AA) The CW decides whether to abort the front fighter or bomber. The CW choose the fighter...
12 well the Axis are consistent! (AC) so No Effect.

The air superiority rises to 3.0:5.0 but the Axis plug on...

Round 4:

They were right to! 10 (DC) The Axis get to choose and put the front Condor through.
9 (AC) Again No Effect

The Axis are feeling increasingly confident - they stick around.

Round 5:

13 (No Effect)
12 (No Effect)

This is some of the most rubbish throwing in the history of air combat....

Round 6:

Right on cue 20 (DX PX) Italy chooses to destroy the CR.32 fighter (pilot is killed)
9 (No Effect)

The difference is now 3. Losing a bi-plane is one thing, but the Axis really do not want their Condor shot out of the sky... they abort.

The two Axis bombers clear the AA screen and attack the Mediterranean Fleet within Grand Harbour.

The Germans choose the Flagship KGV as the main target
The CW then choose the heavy cruiser York
The Germans then switch to light cruiser Southampton for the last attack.

The results are not great...

The stupid mistake by OKW means that the Soviets get at least one more impulse to put their house in order. Having only 6 turns makes life more difficult.

The impulse quickly ends and its on to the Germans and BARBAROSSA!

1 unit disorganised southeast of Riga
All three units disorganised northeast of Kaunas
2 units disorganised east of Kaunas - the Soviet HQ was not amongst them...

The German Army heads east en masse...
