May/Jun 1943

Beginning of Turn Phase:

Initiative:
The Axis really want to get initiative this turn. Unfortunately its up to die rolls.

Axis rolls a 2, Allies roll a 5. Even with the +2 modifier, Axis is still losing. They decide to do a reroll....

Their risk is paid off as they roll a 5 and allies roll a 3. Axis decides to go first and possibly use an offensive if the weather is right.

Weather:
Veddy niiizze...

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Actions:
Japan - Land
Germany - Super-Combined
Italy - Combined

Naval Air:
- Japan puts NAVs out to the Bay of Bengal and China Sea
- Germany puts NAVs out to Red Sea, Black Sea, and Cape St Vincent
- Italy puts NAV out to Arabian Sea

Naval Moves:
- Italy picks up 6 divisions from the Middle East. They bring along one BB in case they want to invade Cyprus.
- Germany sends SUBs out to Norwegian Sea and Arctic Ocean
- Germany sends Portuguese DDs to Cape St Vincent to cause trouble
- Germany sends Romanian DDs to Black Sea and picks up Engineer DIV

Naval Combat:
Totally not historical, but this is the first SUB attack from Germany in the entire war, and only the second Combined action they've taken (since the seaborne invasion of the Low Countries in 1939).

The Allies, lulled into a sense of safety with their convoys, have no escorts in the Norwegian Sea or Arctic Ocean.

Germany attempts to find the Convoys in Norwegian Sea, and roll a 1. Allies roll a 5.

Axis uses surprise points to lower Allied ASW roll to no effect. They use the rest to increase their damage on the CONVs, destroying both CONV points easily.

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Naval Combat (continued):
In the Arctic Ocean, German SUBs fail to find the Allied convoys.

In Cape St Vincent, Germany attempts to find the Allied cruisers and block supply to the forces in Africa and southern Spain. Italy flies out another NAV to the 2 box.

The Allies fly two NAVs out, since the Axis have no fighters out, at this point, there is no way for the Axis to totally cutoff supply. CW also flies out a FTR to the 2 box to protect one of the NAVs.

No matter, no one finds each other anyway.

markb50k -> RE: Another Solo Global AAR (4/25/2014 12:28:11 PM)

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Naval Combat (continued):
Finally, Italy tries to find the Allied convoys in the Arabian Sea to cutoff BPs to the Soviets. They have 2 NAVs in the 1 and 2 box, and roll a 3, both finding the convoys. The Allies roll a 7 and have no escorts in the 0 box.

Italy takes an aggressive move and includes the escorts as well, even though that exposes them to AA fire.

Allied AA fire ends up causing 2 points in bomb reduction. Italy uses the 6 surprise points to increase their air attack damage.

Italy destroys 2 CONVs, CW elects to damage the CL Perth.
Italy damages another CONV, CW elects to abort the CL Perth.

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Naval Combat (continued):
Italy tries to search again, and rolls a 2. Allies roll a 2 as well, so Italy won't have much in the way of surprise points.

They elect to include the escorts again, it worked last time!

The CW doesnt get an AA roll (i'll have to check the charts to see if that makes sense), so no effect on the Italian NAVs.

Italy uses their 2 surprise points on damage to the CW ships.

Italy destroys the CL Sydney. Allies elect to damage (destroy) the last CONV since the cruiser is more valuable.
Italy aborts the last CL Hobart.

At this point, the Allies have been cutoff from any help to the Soviets unless they can re-establish CONVs (likely in the North, not likely in the Arabian Sea)

Wow, Italy got much better than they originally hoped. It helps to roll 2s when doing Naval Searches!

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Ground Strikes:
Germany declares a few strikes using their super-combined, and in three cases we have air-to-air combat, which quite large air fleets involved.

The first is in France, where Germany sends two bombers to hit the only Allied hex that they can get a three-hex attack on it. The Allies have plenty of air to respond with and in this case the forces are even, and the odds are 0/0

1st round, Allies roll an 18, Germany chooses to kill their lead bomber. Axis rolls a 9, no effect.

2nd round, Allies roll a 11, clearing the Stuka. Axis rolls an 18, killing the lead Allied fighter, a 7pt Hellcat. Air combat over.

1st round, Allies roll a 8. Germany aborts the front fighter. Axis rolls a 13, no effect. Odds stay at +1/-1

2nd round, Allies roll a 8. Axis aborts the front fighter again. Axis rolls a 14, aborting the front US fighter. Odds stay at +1/-1

3rd round, Allies roll a 12, no effect. Axis rolls a 13, no effect.

4th round, Allies roll a 10, CLEARING the Axis bomber. Axis rolls a 8, no effect. Air combat over.

Ground Strikes (continued):
In Russia, Germany attacks Zhukov who is a bit exposed forward of the Russian lines. The Soviets know that this could be the unhinging of their defense so they put three fighters to protect Zhukov. They are outclassed by the Axis fighters and the odds are at +2/-2

1st round, Allies roll a 13, CLEARING an Axis bomber. Axis rolls a 17, killing the lead Soviet fighter. Odds go to +3/-2

2nd round, Allies roll a 12, CLEARING the last Axis bomber. Axis rolls a 3, killing a 2nd Soviet fighter. Air combat over.

Germany rails a Stuka and 2 units to Leningrad area.
Italy rails a GARR to southern Spain
Japan rails a MECH unit to Russia

Land Moves:
During land movement, German units enter Sukumi, and cause the Soviet ship there to be overrun. It has nowhere to go, but it doesnt matter since it is intercepted and destroyed by the German NAV in the Black Sea.

markb50k -> RE: Another Solo Global AAR (4/27/2014 10:15:36 PM)

May/Jun 1943

1st Axis Impulse:

Land Combat:
The Axis sends ground support to both attacks in the Southern part of the battle area where they are trying to kill Zhukov and completely unhinge the river line defense.

As a result, the Soviets put three bombers with no escort in support of Zhukov, and 1 more bomber on the other attack. The Germans had 1 fighter in range and so we have air-to-air combat with the Axis at a +1/-1 odds favor.

Round 1, the Allies roll a 12, no effect. Axis rolls a 5, killing the lead Soviet bomber. Ratio goes up to +2/-2

Round 2, the Allies roll a 11, no effect. Axis rolls a 16, killing another Soviet bomber. This is getting silly with 4 Soviet aircraft killed in the last two air combats. Ratio goes up to +3/-3

Round 3, the Allies roll a THREE!! killing the Axis fighter. The Axis rolls a 10, clearing the last bomber. At least they have that.

Overall, 3 Axis bombers get through, and 1 Allied, adding 13 factors and 3 factors respectively.

1st Axis Impulse:

Land Combat (continued):
Now for the combat resolution of that attack on Zhukov, which we will do first. Its a 9.5 modifier on the Blitz table, but Russia chooses the Assault trying to save Zhukov with a shatter.

Germany rolls a 16, and chooses to convert to a retreat, they want to kill as many units as possible this turn, as they think the Soviets are on the brink.

They get the fractional (+11) and roll a 14 (23 overall), getting a breakthrough.

Ouch, looks like Russia is going down for the count this time. With Turkey in on the Axis side, even US mega-production might not win the day.

May/Jun 1943

To finish out the last impulse, the Germans use their supercombined to move all aircraft as close to the front as possible. They are about as ready as they can for what the Allies have in store for them on their own first impulse...

1st Allied Impulse:

Actions:
USSR - Land
CW - Naval
France - Combined
US - Naval

Naval Moves:
CW moves escorts and new CONVs to Norwegian Sea to re-establish pipeline to USSR
CW is able to put some CONVs back into Arabian Sea plus they RTB other CONVs in Indian Ocean to be put into Arabian Sea next turn.

CW sends 3 CVs + escorts on long trip to Indian Ocean. They need to silence the Italian NAVs causing trouble in Arabian Sea.

US picks up Marines/DIVs to clean up the Marshalls
US picks up rest of Marine corps-size units for possible attacks on Philippines

US CVs + main fleet into Bismarck Sea to support operations in Phillipines
US TRS with INF goes into Timor Sea to see if they can take a Japanese port easily enough.

Here's a pic of the area around the Marshalls where the US hopes to take all three ports next impulse.

markb50k -> RE: Another Solo Global AAR (5/1/2014 3:25:55 PM)

May/Jun 1943

1st Allied Impulse:

Naval Combat:
In Cape St Vincent, with 2 US carriers, the Allies see if they can catch these Axis NAVs...

The Axis doesnt have any fighters that can get to the sea boxes that their NAVs are in, so they can only hope that they aren't found...

Well, Allies roll a 3, Axis rolls a 6, giving the Allies the choice of who to include, which they include everyone since they have advantage in air to air and air to sea...

May/Jun 1943

1st Allied Impulse:

Naval Combat (continued):
Allies elect to have both US CV planes act as fighters since they should have enough NAV points to kill the Axis ships...

for the air combat, Allies have a +5/-5 odds advantage, ouch.

1st round, Axis rolls a 9, no effect. Making a statement, the Allies roll a TWENTY! and kill the Italian NAV... Axis aborts the planes not wanting to lose the Condor as well..

markb50k -> RE: Another Solo Global AAR (5/1/2014 3:28:21 PM)

May/Jun 1943

1st Allied Impulse:

Naval Combat (continued):
The actual attack on the Portuguese ships is a bit of a letdown, the Allies miss the Damage roll, and end up only aborting all the Axis ships.. Yawn.

Also, not shown, the Axis attempts to find the Allied convoys in the Norwegian and Arabian Seas, but no luck.
