Tcby -> Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/4/2014 1:46:48 AM)

Hey everyone, I've been having a great time roleplaying with the Ikkuro, going heavy on energy and weapons research from a shadows start, as opposed to my usual energy + high tech. I've been focusing on building ships with boarding tech asap so I can steal pirate ships and dismantle them for tech, which the Ikkuro are particularly good at (lore wise). The yields have been pretty insane, with my first captured ship 5 years into the game filling up 79% of the hyperdrive tech moments after I had researched warp bubble [X(]. You can ignore the other standard components too (hab, fuel, engines, thrust vector etc) as 1 gets fully researched per captured ship.

Anyway, I've noticed that over half of the ships I capture explode immediately once the capture is successful. I have gone over the capture automation policies again and again, and finally set everything to always capture, always disassemble etc. This hasn't changed the result. It made me really sad when I managed to capture a pirate resupply ship. I also found that a pirate capital ship (an ancient one they had found...this was only 8 years in or so) was immediately scrapped for a measly 800 credits, despite my policy being set to always disassemble. That was a crushing blow. That ship had been wreaking havoc for years!

I'm not sure whether the capital ship thing was a bug, but i thought maybe the other exploding ships might be due to me having so many boarding marines shooting up the interior? Sometimes the combined boarding pods vastly outnumber the opposition defense.

Or does the AI sometimes choose to destroy the ship as it is captured?

Any help would be great :)

Number of marines doesn't matter afaik. It's almost certainly auto-scrapping for money.

Note there's two parts to the capture policy: enlistment policy and then scrapping policy. Try setting your enlistment policy to "Always Enlist".

Tcby -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/4/2014 3:25:04 AM)

I had tried setting that to "Never Enlist (always disassemble)". I'll give your suggestion a shot and if it works I'll just stick to manually directing the ship to retire afterwards.

Edit: I changed the policy, then spawned a resupply ship with the editor to test. It didn't explode. I don't think it was scrapping them all for money, though. Because even though I've had a fair few ships explode on capture, it only displayed the message about them being scrapped for money once. Every other time they just exploded and there was no message.

Aeson -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/4/2014 10:02:48 PM)

If I recall correctly, boarding parties can damage or destroy ship components as they fight to take over the ship. If the ship was sufficiently damaged at the time the boarding parties began to fight, then it's possible that the last round of the boarding combat both destroys the last component holding the ship together and 'captures' the ship for you. I might be mistaken, however.

Tcby -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/4/2014 11:07:04 PM)

The boarding parties disable components temporarily, rather than destroying them. I've successfully captured ships with the command center and other vital components disabled, so I'm not sure what would be required to cause the ship to explode. All the life support disabled, maybe?

Edit, also I haven't run into the problem since I followed the above suggestion and changed the capture policy to "Always Enlist". Perhaps the auto disassemble policy is bugged in some way. It's a minor pain individually ordering all the ships to retire at the nearest shipyard, but its nothing compared to some of the other micro :)

If the hyperdrive is destroyed in the capture it may cause the auto destruct to kick in.

auto destruct? How does one get auto destruct on one's ships?

Tcby -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/5/2014 5:11:31 AM)

Every good spaceship needs a big red self-destruct button [:D]

It was added to get rid of broken ships that were limping to space ports due to not having hyperdrives, IIRC if the AI deems a constructor is not within valid repair range then the ship explodes. It is not a component that can be added to your own designs.

In the case of the exploding Resupply ship it hyper jumped away but then stopped mid-jump as its hyperdrive component was disabled in the boarding attack. After it jumped I did not attack it. The disabling of hyperdrive seems to happen almost every time I board a ship, and many of those times the ship does not explode. So I wonder whether that was the cause...

hm!

elanaagain -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/5/2014 12:43:31 PM)

I guess I have never seen auto-destruct happen. Perhaps I have prevented it. When one of my ships is 'mangled' and will take years to reach a base, I 'scrap it immediately. Guess my impatience has caused me to miss out on some auto destruct fun. Big red button.. nice touch!

Tcby -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/5/2014 8:05:34 PM)

If what I had been seeing was auto-destruct, I doubt it is something you can be quick enough to avoid by manually scrapping. It was occurring less than a second after I obtained ownership of the ship. Almost instantaneous.

ReadeB -> RE: Boarding and Capture Clarification (2/6/2014 2:12:47 PM)

I used to have this problem. I believe I fixed it by going through all the empire policies and making sure everything was set to never scrap.

It's probably auto-scrapping for credits. You seem to only get notified the first time this happens in a game, from then on it looks like they are self-destructing right after capture.

Now everything that I capture tries to repair or retrofit. I have to track them down to retire at the nearest shipyard for research.
