Sensei.Tokugawa -> What's the appeal in this game? (2/19/2014 5:09:04 PM)

I have been browsing both the MG store and checking the forums in order to get acquainted with what new wargames are worthy trying and buying. This one covers an interesting theatre and period, but seems to be an offshoot of the AT which I have never gotten into for some reason. How would You recommend that for a hardcore admirer of TOAW III who plays lots of Tillers scenaarios on strategic, operational and tactical level? What's the situation with PBEMing? And how realistic is that one when it comes to history and battlefield simulation?

I can only answer a few of your questions as I am not familiar (other than by name) with the titles you mention.

AT have never been able to draw me in either, but putting the engine (heavily modified, I believe) to work in a historic context made this an excellent match. The AAR that convinced me starts here: http://sugarfreegamer.com/?p=2162, and I think he has made another for Case Blue as well, as the rules change a bit between Case Blue and From Paris to Berlin.

I have only played 5-6 PBEM games, but have never had any issues with finding an opponent.

For me it has immersion and a narrative. Though the thought of cards sounds abit gamey I assure you they add southing to the game that no other game has and it does actually add to the immersion and I'd say realism. My favourite operational game. This scale is normally to high for me as I prefer Coy level games and lower. Saying that I do really enjoy this series. The linked cmapaign is superb and soemthign I wish Vic had expanded on and made new DLC following the format. On a personal level it's a shame the next game is going to be a higher scale again. I wish he had dropped the scale to coy to be honest.

I enjoy both DC titles but did not enjoy AT much. There are differences, as explained above.

Awesome, big and ambitious game. Get it.

Yes, indeed, I bought both Decisive Campaigns of WWI titles yesterday , along with "Revolution Under Siege", but that's another story - and took to them right away. Way more appealing to me than vanilla AT or ATG the way I understood what it is, but still may get back to the idea of trying that if there are more custom scenarios covering historical wars - I was nicely surprised with Lion of Judah's idea to re-create the Somali - Ethiopian Ogaden War. Is this series - DCoWWI I mean - going to be developed and probably covering other WWII thatres and periods? And finally - where do we gather in order to find PBEM opponents once I am ready for that? Are there some other separate sites devoted to DCoWWII? I guess I saw a thread about a ladder somewhere round here ...

burroughs..whats this about DCWW1???

It's called a typo, but a skilful language user can still derive a coherent and mostly accurate communique from the context of the speech and / or the flow and growth of discourse - at least that's what they taught me at universities. I just simplified the phraseology a bit so I don't have to answer more follow-up questions.

What is the next DC WWII title that you mentioned earlier? At a higher level of what?

This is my experience as well.
I dont think the cards are in any way gamey though, i find them and the dynamic objectives and points associated with them to be a unique and interesting addition to this type of wargame.
They are an abstraction, but their presence adds a lot of depth to the strategy that isn't found in many other games.
If you came to this game like me, looking for those unique additions, then you wont be disappointed.

In response directly to the OP
I wouldnt go into it expecting a game similar to TOAW or WITE with these added features though. Few games operate at that level of detail, but as i said, the game does have unique or at least rare features that imo make it worth getting.

After dealing with both DCoWWII titles - BfWtB and CB - for over about two months now I can say honestly, with several years of wargaming, reading and studying the subject matters from a few angles under my belt now - that those are one of the best operational level simulations I have ever encountered, combining the accuracy or battlefield re-enactment and intuitive management of TOAW III with much better handling of C&C and supplies typical for TOC games. I can endorse that as definitely recommended for all hardcore realism freaks. Deserves much more attention it has probably had - and actually a case for concern is not "cartoon - like feel", that's a secondary if not tertiary thing in terms of its importance - but what would you say about "sprites" then? Is that "serious"?

Talon_XBMCX -> RE: What's the appeal in this game? (4/6/2014 2:14:25 PM)

Now that's what I call an endorsement!

I've been looking over these titles for a while and was hesitant to pull the trigger based on the cards (though I was surprised by their use in Conflict of Heroes as well). Downloading as we speak. Looking forward to a quiet Sunday on the Eastern Front [;)]

+1

I have been playing and designing scenarios for TOAW since 1998. When v3.5 was kept in limbo for a very long time I started to look for something similar.
The DC series has been a perfect fix with better/more interesting handling of naval warfare, sea/air transports and supply. The ability to attach units to another HQ is nicely handled. The editor gives you access to almost everything although it is a steep learning curve.
