Hey Obvert, I gleaned recently from some of your posts that you are a small craft fanboi.....naming the American 6" gunboat (name escapes me) as your "pocket cruiser" and recently touting the Taney (which I refer to as my pocket destroyer). I just wanted to point out that you should look closely at the Aussie small craft. One of their classes (don't remember class name but recall Yarra is one of them) is armed with torpedoes! They are a bit on the slow side at 16 knots max. but pack a real wallup if you can ever get them into a fight.

Well, if she's gonna sink anyway... maybe put her back online, in a TF, and see if the crew puts the fire out? In my experience, ships crews have a higher potential damage repair on the minor damage stuff while in a TF rather than disbanded in a port. Granted, they can also sink at sea... but it sounds like things are heading south anyways? What's the damage at now? Putting her into a TF is something I would've done the day after fires stayed at 1 while disbanded in port, but I wasn't reading/paying attention here at the time.

I do like making use of the variety of small ships available on both sides, especially in DBB. It's a fun game within a game to use as little force as possible to achieve and objective. [:)]

My dad had pretty much every 70s + 80s heavy metal vinyl ever released. I think he had some 3500+ records including some seriously rare ones. He sold them to "update" his collection to CDs... [sm=sad-1361.gif]

Hi all. I'm traveling in Italy now so turns have been slowed and not much time to update. It's been fun, and will get even better. Saw some of Milan, now in Bologna, and Thursday will travel to Venice with my wife and meet Nick and his lady for a dinner. Then he is being extremely generous and lending us his flat there for three nights!! [&o] We're really looking forward to it, and to spending time with Nick and Valentina. I'll update soon when I can. In the meantime here is a view from my epic journey up a medieval tower in Bologna. It has 499 steps, all of which made of wood and leaning into a chasm in the middle with only a wooden rail to grip. August 8 - 9, 1943 After a week in Italy I am back home. Last Thursday Nick and his lovely girlfriend Valentina met my wife and I for a dinner, along with his cousin Candice who is half American and could help with the translations when needed. The dinner was amazing and the company even better. Nick is a true gentleman, and it's great to chat about the game while we're in the middle of it, each of us having to carefully measure our words of course! I wish we could have spent more time, but it was a great night out at least! [&o] We also got onto to the subject of Game of Thrones, obviously a mutual interest, and I'll have to get back into the books before the series begins again next week! I keep forgetting to ask about him taking on Greyjoy as his name on the forums. A very interesting choice! In game we've only traded about two turns in the past week. Nick is still very busy at work and with his father in hospital. We'll pick up the pace a bit this week when the schedules resume their workday patterns. The game hasn't taken any big turns of late, but some long planned actions are about to be put into play, so stay tuned. There could be some fireworks. [;)] SUBS: Sunfish gets one of the xAKL plying back and forth to Rabaul from Truk. INDIA: A few units are moving down the Arakan now toward Akyab. SW PAC: Nick sweeps Lae heavily but doesn't bomb. I don't have CAP up, and I just use this as a forward field for a turn or two, then leave again. Mostly hitting barges, of which another bunch are liquidated by some Boomerangs. SO PAC: A division and some Marines are walking into Torokina. These will bombard as soon as possible to see what's here and how much to keep sending through. It's reading 10k from recon and the shattered Buin defenders are certainly there, but I'm not sure what else. it's interesting how some forward bases never appear in SIGINT while others show up nearly daily, like Diego Garcia. August 10 -11, 1943 SUBS: New subs coming online are moving into the area of the web north of Rabaul and along the North coast of New Guinea. This is the area where it seems we have the best chance to escape the ASW and still hit the frequent ships moving to the area. It will continue to be costly to fight in the South Pacific. INDIA: For the 12th I've set a big raid from Dimapur and Jorhat toward the Central Chinese plains. I'll aim to hit Chengtu manpower to reduce the industry. It's already down by about a quarter, but I want it gone. This is the first moment I've had enough supply to strike here, and it may be a one off for a while, so I'm going with all available 4E, plus some close in B-17s to hit the fields for good measure. CENT PAC: Getting most of the air units and big infantry shuffled off elsewhere now. Some going South, some going for fur-lined gloves. [;)] Plans in the next few days in the So Pac area so all available first and second tier air units are going to be involved. I've got enough bases now all over the place and I want to give Nick a little scare. I haven't ever assembled the pieces in this area yet, and when I do, it'll be for a good reason. I've got the reason now, so they're staging in, but I'll try to veil the intended target with my placement. I know he's very keen on recon, watching troop numbers, airfield numbers and reading the leaves of what might happen. So far he's seeing what I want him to see and not what I don't. August 12 - 13, 1943 SUBS: Grayling hits an xAK and Crevalle gets a PB. Picking up the pace here. INDIA: The move to Akyab continues slowly, and it looks like there are about 13-14k troops there along with another 20k across the water in the jungle. In the meantime most divisions have filled out and almost all have 43 squads and devices. Most of the Indian army is free to move as well since it was easy to buy them out early. [:)] CENT PAC: Just shoring things up here and getting some base forces installed. I'll start some bombing against Eniweitok and Wake soon. SW/SO PAC: I've got some things in the works here. Step one though is para-dropping at Hansa Bay. It's nearly empty and close enough to support. Really though it's a diversion hoping to draw some fighters this way, out of Rabaul. More to come! Nick moves some CL/DD to Umboi with a big Cap for the 12th, playing right into where I want him, but moves them back a day later after jumping some Boomerangs. I think he suspects something, but more around the Southern side of New Britain. CHINA: A LOT of fires started at Chengtu. at the end of the bombing 266,448 were burning! Some industry has burnt, but not as much as I'd expect. We'll see as they continue to burn. I thought it was excellent use of the small units available in the area at a time when no major offensives could be undertaken by the Allies.

It is a bit historical, but f course our use of the tools in the area snit at all. Nick's dispositions are decidedly farther North from the actual war as well. It's like we're playing with what we consider to be learned lessons from the campaign and yet because of the early campaigns elsewhere the Allies were still able to get a good foothold and begin the slow move up the chain.

A few of the encroachments were wiped out by counter-landings but most remained in Allied hands. I thought it was excellent use of the small units available in the area at a time when no major offensives could be undertaken by the Allies. I've been reading a lot abut the area and there was so much activity with small units and small ops, seeing all of those little units in the OOB made me think I should do something with them. For the Allies it's a great place to fight in 43![:)]

I just finished reading all this AAR and I liked it a lot. I wanted to let you know that I will be following this from now on. It's a very entertaining read. I am a newbie and this game has a horrible learning curve, just reading this taught me a lot. And I am very curious about your line, a few posts ago, about "fur-lined gloves". Possibilities... possibilities [8D] Can I ask a question? How do you feel you are doing considering your position, your losses and the current date? I mean, since I'm completely inexperienced, I do not have a good idea of the flow of the game and so I have a hard time telling. Do you feel you are on a good timetable, or not? Do you feel your losses have been heavy, in line with what's expected, or relatively light? I'm quite curious :)

It's been a really entertaining game and after my two PBEMs as the Japanese side, I've had a bit of a learning curve myself getting used to what the Allies are capable of in the early going. Nick tested me a lot in the beginning and I think being inexperienced I tried to do too much to quickly at times, which in India didn't really pan out. I also took some risks with the ABDA fleets in the SRA early and those were largely ineffective and costly. I don't like to just turtle up, but I could have been wiser around Palembang particularly. Aside from some risky use of the 4Es I think I've done well chipping away in the air. At sea it's been more difficult but i've not really committed much for a while and my losses aren't by any means unsustainable. In fact I've lost almost no invasion shipping and only a few modern combat ships. No CVs have been lost (yet, although some are moving into harms way right now! [X(] As for my own timeline I'm slightly ahead in Cent Pac and about where I expected, surprisingly, for CBI. For So Pac/SW Pac I'm just a bit ahead but whether I stay that way depends a lot on his reaction in the next few weeks to current moves. I will launch some bigger moves in late autumn 43 and those will really determine more of the schedule, so fingers crossed. I'll detail some of this soon, but have some other catching up to do first! August 14, 1943 SW/SO PAC: On the 14th the Japanese flew in troops to Hansa Bay and struck back against our paras that had invested the base. Part of the 53rd division from Kaveing is now here. This is good as he looks to be focused over here. :) CHINA: The Japanese again pushed back the Army stuck in Central China and luckily only one unit actually surrendered. Good luck, I find that is mandatory to take either Manus or Rabaul (level seven ports) but not both. Allies really need one of those ports though.

I predict great success, unless weather socks in a lot of your flights. With that number of assets, you can shut down anything. You might not bag the surface assets, but Rabaul is going to get absolutely pounded. Your invasion forces still might be at risk from other airbases, but... that's small potatoes.

Then in the morning phase the fireworks kick off immediately. Nick's first strike is a winner, but with 8 CVE and 4 fleet CVs nearby the bleeding CAP and the dedicated LR CAP from the islands does great job of limiting strikes all day. ... but around 35 make it through to strike the Buka invasion. This is almost all landing craft plus a few xAKL, so very low risk. Three DDs are here as well to defend against surface threats.
