Thanks for the feedback guys [:)]

I don't know if you know this trick, but if you keep the middle mouse button held down, you can drag around he image kind of, like holding down he right mouse button in game.

I'm being a bit lazy with this next slide.
Ill do a big one every 3 hours or so, because they take a long time to do, and this is a very long scenario.

Hi,

Both of your last 2 experiments have more easily read text for me. But ALL of your efforts are absolutely first class!![&o]

Rob.

Dazkaz15,

Crikey... I am actually a bit stunned... I have been around PC wargames from the start, have and do beta test for some, but have never seen an AAR like this before.. :).

Congratulations... hugely impressive... you must surely publish it in some sort of pdf booklet.. surely?

It would be a terrible waste just to leave it sitting here forever... !

Tremendously high standard...

All the best,
Kip.

Lovely comments, thank you guys [:)]
I will be doing a pdf of the AAR's I have done. More on that later [;)]

Usually in my slides the enemy intel is set recent. In this one as its several hours since the last one, I have set it to all, and annotated it so you can see the developing tactical situation easier.

There seems to be a bit of a pattern emerging here, that would indicate the enemy are not very proficient in the concept of combined operations, and infantry support for their armour at night, and in close terrain.

Is there a small typing error in the Contact reports D2, 22:01 (23:01 ?)

Just to show that I am paying eager attention :-)

Thanks mate.

Copy and paste can be your best friend, and worst enemy.
Just ask Dave [:)]

Anyway glad you have been paying attention [:)]

How are you finding the background images?
A nice touch, or distracting?

Phoenix100 -> RE: Greyhound Dash Axis AAR by Daz (6/3/2014 8:59:01 PM)

Prefer without the background, Daz. PDF great idea. Do it. You going to sell them then?

I won't be selling it, no.
I am thinking about starting my own website though to hold all the stuff I do, as well as continue to post it here.
The pdf would be available for download at my website.
There will probably be some wargaming related adds on it though, and maybe some Photoshop ones too to help pay for the hosting.
I would like to do a Photoshop tutorial on it to show the process I use to make the slides so you can have a go yourself.

Photoshop is very expensive mind, so might be beyond the disposable budget of a lot of people. Also they take a long time to do so might be beyond the disposable time of most as well [:'(]
It is for me as well to be honest, but its my main hobby now, and in comparison to some of the other hobbies I have had in the past its relatively cheap [:'(]

I am also thinking of doing a movie to show my play style, to help those that are interested in my very slow roleplaying, methodical approach. Speeded up considerably of course [:D]
All this might just be a pipe dream though.
I don't even know how to make a website yet, and my head is starting to spin with all the other unfinished stuff I have to do [&:]

You know that feeling when you have so many things to do, you end up doing nothing, because you don't know where to start. Well I'm close to that now lol
I have Adobe Dreamweaver loaded, and have been watching the tutorials, but there is so much to learn, and I still need to finish the silly movie for my daughters wedding yet[8|]

Looking forward to your pdf. I had started printing the screens, but pretty quickly I released that wasn't going to work without cutting them down, or resizing. I tried resizing, but then I couldn't read them.

But I'll be looking forward to what you do.

Thanks

Dazkaz, could you comment on the durability and morale of enemy HQs please. You've already mentions how they are stubborn; I found out the same myself and it makes the game frustrating for me. Is this a serious problem in your opinion?

Morale does seem to be very sticky with them I must admit. What I mean by that is even in extreme circumstances as can be seen in my last slide with TF Howze, they won't surrender, sometimes until the last man.
As you can see by the slider moral is not broken yet even though they are routing, although this might just be fog of war masking the true facts.
Of course history is full of examples of this kind of resilience, when lead by a good commander.

I've not played through the next hour yet but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they manage to rout off, and escape.
It also will not surprise me at all if the I Bn HQ 156 Pz Gren Regt put up a better defence than their line Coy's in Ny, even though they are half the size in manpower.

Its been like this since Dave adjusted their resilience after calls, mainly by Wodin, but a lot of us agreed with him, that the small support units, including HQ,s but especially mortar teams, were too squishy.
They were always the first to be destroyed, usually by artillery or mortar fire, before they even made contact with the enemy, just because they were co-located with a unit that was being bombarded.
Our argument to make them more resilient was that they would normally not be exposed to direct long range fire, and would often be in local depressions, or cover of some kind in defilade, as they didn't need to see the enemy to be effective.

The problem is the change also made them unrealistically resilient to close fighting, and being over-run, by an attacking force.
I don't think that is the only problem with them though.
In slide 14 against TF Hogan, this is probably an unrelated problem, where the attacking units were just not able to detect that the HQ had an armoured component, and were not using their hand held anti tank weapons against it, so its probably a bug.

As to it being a serious problem, it can be role played around, as I mentioned there are many examples of very stubborn, resourceful commanding officers.
I don't think its a game breaker though it can be very annoying.
I don't think its fair on Dave to keep having to adjust game balance issues indefinitely though, because lets be honest, there will always be one unit or another that is not preforming how we would like.

If Panther are going to continue to release more content for this current engine though, I think it should be looked at in the next round of patching that will result from the new release.

This is just my deductions, and personal opinion, and may be completely wrong.

Daz,

I look forward to seeing your PDF. Your approach is very good and I know that I can learn a lot from it. I think that I'm going to review this whole post again once I'm done my current battle, so that I can really focus on it.

Well done!

Mike

dazkaz15 -> RE: Greyhound Dash Axis AAR by Daz (6/5/2014 6:19:57 PM)

Thanks Mike [:)]

The white space, (snow texture) in this slide, and the background images in the ones above represent un-scaled distance between the points of interest.
These contact reports are zoomed right in, and the image would be huge if I was to try and represent the whole map to scale, at this level of zoom.

I think it is a nice way to join the zoomed map elements with those background pictures.

It is a special kind of graphic novel documentary.

I'm kind of on the fence with this.
I have been trying to make the background images match the weather, with a little bit of Photoshop magic, and darkening them right down to represent night time.
Like you I think it adds a bit of narrative, and interest to the map that after a while gets a bit boring. I was looking forward to showing the daylight ones, some of which are stunning. Although its not the best way to display them, with big blotches of map all over it lol
Like Peter (Phoenix) I can also see that it may be a bit distracting, that's why I asked, and why I felt it needed a bit of an explanation in the last slide, although I have toned it down now to a plain texture (less distracting?).

I tried the green that I have used in the past for the background, but it just didn't suit the scene, so changed it to white (snow).
I will still be doing the big sitrep images, (without background images) when its needed to show the whole battlefield, but it has hardly changed since I did the last one, so no need for that yet.

Anyway, I'm glad your still enjoying it [:)]

Your AARs are a great motivational tool for me getting back into the game.  Excellent work [&o].

Also looking forward to potential PDF format.

dazkaz15 -> RE: Greyhound Dash Axis AAR by Daz (6/14/2014 2:02:03 PM)

Thanks oldspec4, I'm glad you are enjoying it [:)]

I am going on holiday, (vacation) to North Wales tomorrow for 2 weeks, hiking, and climbing, so I won't be updating for a bit.
The wife is going to be going on the worlds longest, and fastest zip line so that will be fun to watch [:'(]

If you want to chat about tactics, or have any questions on my AAR, or any game issues, I will have dial up access on the Ipad.
Feel free to use this thread to chat in, it won't spoil the continuity of the AAR as it will all be in order, and together in the PDF doc when I get round to doing it.
