China: attack on KMT corps by IJ cavalry and an inf regiment somehow gets supply(-) despite having plenty of supplies... and loses 50 squads as destroyed for no good reason. Wtf. At least they werent important units.

Burma: Moulmein falls and the British manage to retreat across the river without casualties.

Malaya: Singapore bombed again with much better, a Ki-48 is lost. G3Ms destroy 2 AMc near Singapore.

DEI: IJN CA squadron approaches Batavia under LRCAP. Dutch bombers strike and Zeros, Ki-43s and flak together destroy 19 enemy planes. 2 Zeros with 1 pilot are lost to the Brewsters. Tarakan deliberate attack achieves OK results but no cigar yet.

On Mindanao, the last enemy troops surrender. Theres just 1 small detachment out of supplies and everything near Zamboanga(which needs a garrison any way).

OTOH 12 G3Ms are lost as they run into half a dozen P-40s. The escort fighters accompany only the last of 5 attacks. I think its time to end using Netties for ground attacks.

South Pacific: Marines land at Fincshafen! Zero-LRCAP over the fleet destroys 7 Hudsons and 9 A-24s. Nearby, an xAKL carrying supplies is destroyed by A-24s. 2 enemy AMC reported at Shortlands - these either carry float planes or look for IJ invasion TFs.

Submarines: IJN subs destroy 2 xAK near Sydney. A USN submarine is attacked by 2 puny PBs at Tabiteuea and is sunk!!!! Or at least it was badly mauled and I heard submarine sinking sounds. [8D]

Air war: Despite the Netty ambush air losses for today are 18 IJ for 38 Allied. I need to stop losing good planes and aircrew though.

China: deliberate attack goes fairly well and lots of KMT squads get destroyed. They are also finally retreating away but apparently not in combat mode. Another attack will follow in a day:

Chenghow also falls to the Japanese! Theres a stack with 30k KMT troops now in Loyang hex, but a brave IJ regiment defends it from the shelter of size 3 Chinese built forts. [:)]

Burma: AVG sweeps Moulmein. The low-altitude Ki-43 LRCAP that is vastly outnumbered fights admirably and the end score is 4-4. Only 1 pilot is lost, which is great news!

Malaya: it seems that some British units are moving away from Singapore to defend at Johore Bahru!! Could it be that the Allies have managed to build much better forts there, so much that even the river hexside to Singapore is disregarded in favor of advanced defenses?

DEI: Ki-43s sweep Batavia and destroy a B-339 for the loss of a Ki-43 and its pilot. Not great. Tarakan deliberate attack fails miserably and lots of squads get disabled. It seems that the place wont be falling in the near future despite the 144th Inf Reg's best attempt. An American/British/Dutch naval force with at least destroyers in it appears near Tarakan... Possibly his SigInt revealed multiple ground units on their way to Tarakan and Manado. He'll find these units elsewhere soon enough.

Also, Oosthave falls, which is always great!

PI: Zeros shoot down 3 P-40s over Manila to no loss, and intercept 7 Seagulls(!!!!!) on a ground attack mission. 5 get shot down by 2 Zero pilots, and another fighter ace is born. Isnt the Seagull a perfectly good aircraft? Why take the risk(he knew there were no Zeros on Luzon) and waste them like this... Even if ground attack was only secondary mission? IJN CL-led DD SAG has tangled with the PT boats several times over the past couple of days, maybe hes just trying to intercept the supply convoys. No harm done to any IJ naval units here yet.

South Pacific: 2 Australian AMCs manage an open sea interception of an IJN force carrying aviation support battalion to Guadalcanal. The AMCs are hit lightly but half of the battalion drowns. This force is now diverted towards Ontong Java. Not many days before Rabaul is size 4 and the Nettie fun begins.

Submarines: Allies are finally starting to patrol seas near their most important bases and ports. 3 IJN subs have been dueling with at least 4 USN ASW task forces for several weeks now(!) in the middle of nowhere South and East of Hawaii. E14Y floatplanes find the Allies and Allied patrol aircraft or ASW patrol zones find the subs, and neither side hits the other. In the meanwhile, first Allied subs have arrived at the Home Islands. Air patrols seem to find them easily and we can go around them mostly.

China: KMT stack in Loyang doesnt attack. They must be out of supply... 1450 AV ready next to Loyang vs. the Chinese superstack of 1100 AV(before the losses it took last) that has been overstacked 30%-ish for 4 turns. Unit composition as in previous battle + a fresh 395-AV division. Wish me luck!

Burma: 45-ish Ki-43s sweep Toungoo and arrive fragmented over the target. It seems that despite yesterday's losses, pretty much the entire AVG was set on CAP and at a high %. Lol. Ki-43s fail miserably and 17 are lost with 16 pilots, though luckily some were only WIA. 15 H81s are shot down too, so after all it wasnt so bad, thats 15 irreplaceable Hawks less and instead of shooting IJAAF bombers in China they are happy to dogfight Hayabusas over Burma. 77th Sentai vs. AVG score is now a bit more even at 40 - 30 !

Malaya: Kluong falls! And surprise surprise: the British have 18 ground units defending Singapore in Johore Bahru! We'll see how many troops that is in the end. The British never managed to evacuate Kuantan or Alor Star and have another 150-ish AV(now only 100) stuck in Temuloh.

DEI: parts of the IJN invasion fleet on its way to DEI get sighted. Theres lots of ships on the Western coast of Sumatra but Netties dont attack. They're either evacuating troops and/or supply or reinforcing Sumatra(which is madness, theres 2 Inf. Div's worth of IJ troops on Sumatra + engineers and aviation support + a recon regiment). Lots of support ships(AVPs, AVDs, AGs, AGPs etc.) leave Java towards Makassar/Kendari/Ambon/Timor. No idea why just these types.

For whatever reason 2 Catalinas strike IJN shipping near Singkawang and Ki-43s shoot down the other. 2 WH139s fly a ground attack mission to Tarakan.

PI: nothing today, I decided to go after Manila first.

South Pacific: French and US submarines infest the waters around Truk as well as the Marshall Islands. USN CA force bombards Tabiteau and disabled a couple of squads. By the end of the day the unit is at 100/100 again. Why does he keep bombarding useless places and showing me where he has his BBs and CAs? I'm not going to use KB to chase these groups or their backups around the Pacific. At best I'll sooner or later accidentally catch one of them.

Submarines: IJN subs destroy and AVP from the aforementioned TF near Java and another subs bags big looking CM near Sydney.

Thought of the day: I have a feeling that my opponent may handle his Navy better than I can mine(or at least he is highly aggressive) but that he doesnt care or know enough about air groups. Hes thrown away lots of planes, even some of very useful types such as Catalinas and SBDs. He should be more careful.

The Chinese stack is now reported to have a strength of 91,000(the hex it fell back to already had a Corps or something) but stacking limit of 45,000. I wonder if I could just run over these guys all the way to Sian?

In Loyang itself the Chinese army attacks but fails to beat back the defending brigade. These Chinese forces have been completely cut off from their supplies for 2 days and that attack must have consumed some. IJ reinforcements of 650-ish AV will arrive in 4 days.

Near Kiukiang a Chinese Army HQ is destroyed.

Burma: Ki-21s bomb an aviation support unit in Rangoon. Oops! Luckily there are no enemy fighters.

Malaya: The British now decide they want to fight in Singapore after all. The cut-off units attempt to get away but the IJ units have cut them off and will catch them soon while 6 British units are still stuck in Temuloh.

DEI: IJ CL Squadron attempts to intercept the small TF of enemy MBGs and HDMLs and such near Batavia, but they retreat to port and IJN finds itself in the adjacent hex. Dutch air force attacks again and aerial battles go 13-1 in the favor of the IJ and a new Zero ace is born. A Ki-43 pilot scores 3 victories!

The USN DD TF near Manado is sighted again. They are probably looking for reinforcing IJ convoys. Allies must be confident that there are no strong IJ surface units or carriers in the area.

South Pacific: warship traffic between Brisbane and Sydney. They are probably on their way to Brisbane.

Burma: roughly 2/3 of the AVG have left Toungoo. Just 14 aircraft remain. IJ will start the river crossing in 2 days with a force of 750-ish AV. A cavalry regiment just reached the hex behind the Allies so they may want to retreat to Pegu after all. 2 reinforcing regiments start their march from Bangkok up and Tavoy falls to IJ(actually 2 days ago alread) - for some reason they left Tavoy with its forts to IJ and are now happy sitting in a non-base hex completely cut off from supply, several hexes behind the lines.

Malaya: -

DEI: IJ recon regiment enters Padang while IJ fleet arrives to the waters near Manado. 3 days to landings. The plan is to take Kendari with excessive force, turn it into an airbase and lay a couple of hundred mines nearby to welcome the submarines that have started to use shallow waters too and the eventual naval bombardments my opponent so loves.

South Pacific: Allied subs lurk near Bougainville island. CL Achilles is reported to have sunk but I doubt it. Allies lost no float planes today. The sinking location is 2 hex from Brisbane so she was heading North. Theres 7 submarines between her and Brisbane, and apparently the Allies only fly naval search sorties from Sydney and Townsville, so the subs arent detected. IJ fleet and raiders remain undetected.

Submarines: A USN submarine attacks a medium-sized IJ xAK on the surface near Truk. The xAK goes down later but the submarne also receives 4 hits and is forced to disengage.

Burma: The attack march begins. IJ has 1054 raw AV with a light tank regiment + an Army HQ + 2 arty units crossing the river and 50 AV Cavalry regiment already behind the Allies. Expected enemy strength is 400 AV with forts 1 or 2, forest hex. Expecting the river to be crossed in 3 days. Aerial recce finds some enemy units retreating towards Rangoon. A squadron of what is probably RAF bombers and transport planes carrying supply to China is found in Mandalay.

IJAAF's Ki-21s from Bangkok hit Rangoon's airfield and score 3 runway and 3 airbase hits... No opposition in the air nor casualties to either side.

Malaya: Mersing falls! IJ regiment reaches the British troops that fled Alor Star and they suffer great loss of men because of all the minus modifiers, including lack of supply. IJAAF hits Singapore and keeps the airfield damaged.

DEI: Bad weather grounds sweeps to Batavia but IJN approaches Kendari. British-American strike aircraft fly and A-24s score 3 1000 lbs. bomb hits on CL Sendai when the Zero-CAP failed to intercept. I thought she'd be a goner but surprisingly the damage is fairly light and the fires were out by the end of the day. She'll get escorted to safety. Zeros shoot down 11 A-24s and 3 Hudsons - another day of relatively high losses to Allied air arm's few planes that have the potential to do real harm.

PI: first IJ units enter Manila. Allied air units based at Manila and Bataan fly naval search and recon sorties(O-47 and Beech 18s).

South Pacific: A large IJN AMC gets torpedoed by a French submarine right next to Truk and is sunk. ASW efforts dont seem to bother these submarines much, and why would it, the multiple patrols with good TF commanders dont find or attack the subs. Only air search does.

In Santa Cruz Islands IJN AMC raiders enter Luganville hex and destroy... What exactly? [&:][:)]

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (5/17/2014 3:30:32 PM)

And heres how the things look in the DEI. As you can see, the first wave of invasions didnt go very deep. In this scenario Allies start with 3 full squadrons of A-24s and a CVL BG in Darwin so I wanted to cover my landings in the DEI well. After today's action most of the A-24s(32 shot down) have been destroyed and CVL Charlotte is probably being repaired. And it lost its entire SBD section. At least majority of the Dutch navy is in Sydney as is Houston. When it comes to surface units, I dont think the Allies have more than maybe a Dutch CL or 2 and some destroyers in the DEI. I can be wrong but there still most probably isnt anything ready that could challenge these landings.

So, its the Kendari landing in 2 days followed by 2 small landings(using the troops now in Ternate) nearby a couple of days behind, and invasion of Manado within 2 weeks or so. And of course ASAP invasion of Koepang with the full division once I have it available. I had the PPs to buy out the \B part of the division today and start loading them aboard the fleet already ready at Kobe port but from all the excitement I forgot to do that... [:)]

edit: the ground unit in Tarakan is of course 144th Infantry Regiment and not a division

Things dont go quite according to the plan.

China: Loyang defenders get bombarded with pretty much the entire IJAAF bomber force in the area. They have no forts and are in the plains without supply --> great losses! Allies have moved some fighters to Sian. I expect the worst and give the bombers an easier target: the behind-the-lines 6-Corps stack 3 hex South of Nanyang.

Burma: Allies retreat to Pegu!

Malaya: -

DEI: IJN CL Sqdn again fails to find the Dutch patrol craft force near Batavia but the Dutch air units attack again, this time heavily escorted. Through the day, they lose 13 B-339s and 7 139WH bombers. 2 Ki-43s and 1 pilot are lost to the Brewsters.

Total fail with the Kendari operation: the amphib TF decides to unload AT WAYPOINT which is that small island without bases. I hope it wont take 2 weeks to load them aboard again. Allies dont attack the task force and CarDiv II manages to destroy a small tanker and 2 AM escorts and a B-339 fighter at Ambon.

South Pacific: invasion force is now sighted by the enemy. Munda invaded! Catalinas from Ndeni attack the unloading transports at Munda but dont hit. 2 Catalinas are shot down by the armed merchant cruisers!! I think the Cats were supposed to attack the IJN AMC raiders 1 hex South of Ndeni but bad weather protected them.

Submarines: IJN sub destroys a large(24 points) AD in fuel cargo NE of Pearl. I-5 is hit hard by British DDs near Brisbane and may become the first casualty of the IJN submarine fleet. Sydney is reconned by E14Y floatplane: low detection level and nothing unexpected is found. What is in the port does not show up so another recon flight is ordered.

China: Loyang bombardment destroys a couple of Chinese squads. Theres no return fire.

Burma: -

Malaya: Singapore bombed again. 2 bombers are lost and damage seems to have raise so the bombers are now stood down.

DEI: The Kendari invasion TF manages to load all troops and supply back aboard, so the landings at the actual target will be tomorrow! No enemy attacks, but a minefield is expected.

PI: enemy stack from Bataan started to move towards Clark after seeing that there is only 1 IJ unit. IJ armor and a division will reinforce. There is no hurry whatsoever and if the Allies want to burn their supplies, all the better!

South Pacific: invasion fleet now a day from PM. KB attacks enemy TF near Cairns and destroys 2 PCs - looked like light destroyers or something. CS reconnaissance cruisers have been release to scout the Coral Sea. A-24s attack IJ TFs but theres only 4 of them left and they dont hit a thing.

I'm expecting a minefield but there isnt much that I can do about it. No DMS ships available in this theater. 15,000 troops in 9 units reported at PM - so the place was reinforced very lately. Probably at least some of them are the small garrisons from the area and at least 2 units are aviation support or engineers. Only 90 guns. IJ will rely on air and naval superiority(=a bombardment run) and troop quality here.

Submarines: IJN submarine destroys a DD near Pearl! Near Home Islands, a USN subs scores 2 duds on an xAK.

Reinforcements: CL Yehagi arrives. She'll be sent to the South Pacific where her radar set is needed. A paratroop unit, several SNLD guards and IJNAF aviation support also arrive. These will be all sent to reinforce central and south pacific areas, and the small 16-AV units to garrison Mindanao.

China: Chinese A-29 Hudsons bomb IJ troops near Loyang. This is anticipated and the few Ki-44 prototypes and Ki-43-Ia s are put into good use: out of 6 bombers they shoot down 3 and damage 1 or 2 more. Not very decisive but thats still 3 bombers less and the Chinese dont receive bomber replacements until much later, and even then not many. They'll have to work with a limited number of SBs, DB-3s and Hudsons.

Burma: What seems to be either resupply convoy or a CAP-trap xAKL TF positions itself in the gulf between Rangoon and Moulmein. 12 Ki-43s sweep Pegu nearby and meet a similar number of AVG's H81s. 3 Ki-43s are lost with their pilots for 2 Hawks. G4Ms with Zero escorts fly to attack the TF. 2 Hawks are found over the TF and the other is shot down for the loss of one G4M. 3 xAKL are sunk. 2 of the 3 AVG squadrons took part to these battles.

This TF is outside of the Hawk's normal range from Toungoo so they probably have 2 squads at or near Rangoon and 1 more or less full one at Toungoo. I'm anticipating them to fly tomorrow too so I'm going to try and see what 50 Ki-43s can do against the AVG, should weather allow them to fly. If this was a CAP-trap it was done with insufficient number of aircraft that used wrong bases with wrong orders... LRCAP at 20,000 ft against low-flying Netties.

Malaya: -

DEI: Kendari is invaded and all troops are ashore! Also, there was no mine field. Dutch submarines are positioned in wrong places. Zero-CAP shoots down 3 139WHs and flak from BBs shoots down a Hudson.

PI: -

South Pacific: Port Moresby invaded!!! Almost all troops and supply is ashore. Bombardment goes pretty well too and disabled a number of squads. 220 defensive AV reported, fragmented into small infantry units. Japan now has 300 AV plus another 150 AV is on its way across the Owen Stanleys. 5 days or so out.

CLs Kitakami and Oi raid the Australian coast and destroy 2 AMs. 14 Wirraways and some B-17s attack them but dont hit.

2 B-17Es strike CarDiv I... There are 44 Zeros(initially 22 or 24, but they all did attack) that make the interception but the B-17s damage them ALL and get to attack the carriers(no hits fortunately). This is why the 4Es are just utter bullshit... The gunners are way too accurate and effective. If they were classed as medium bombers within the game they'd have been both shot down probably by the first 10 Zeros despite of their durability and guns. 44 Zeros attacked, some probably multiple times, and managed to hit the B-17s less than 10 times. No kills. ALL Zeros were damaged which is just ridiculous. I could understand if the attackers were slow A5Ms with pea shooters and bad pilots but these were the cream of the IJNAF with low fatigue, patrol altitudes from 10 to 16 kft and they flew good planes with cannon armament. Luckily I didnt lose many of them as OPS and no pilots were lost. Combine 4Es with actual strike aircraft and theres nothing the IJ can do. And I dont count returning the favor in the form of 4E kamikazes in early 1945. I need to get every fighter airgroup to fly armored fighters ASAP.

There is an Allied SAG with cruisers sighted near New Caledonia. We'll see what tomorrow brings...

Submarines: an USN sub sinks an Aden class xAK near Kyushu. I went through the convoys in the area and some still had old routes... Set 3 more to use the route which has ASW patrols and the best air search coverage. Set Shanghai's patrol unit to stop training and start flying. The subs have finally arrived!

I-5 is still limping towards Rabaul at 2 knots... She probably wont make it. The 2 subs damaged near Ceylon on the other hand both make it to ports. One is being repaired while the other diverted to a small port. That one probably wont get back into action sooner than in 3 months. Need to secure Singapore first before I can send an AS to help it.

Screenshots coming later!

Heres how a typical IJAAF attack on Singapore performed by the 60th or 90th Sentai looks like. The picture taken by a brave Army Aviation Press reporter aboard a Ki-21 features a Ki-21 formation from 90th Sentai flying through enemy anti-aircraft fire near Johore Bahru. On the background is the Malacca straits. Notice the Ki-21 that has lost its port engine in the top middle of the picture

In the raid pictured above, bomber losses were lighter than usual. [:D][:D][:D]

January 16 1942

China: the 2 large KMT cut-off stack in center and north(in Loyang) are bombarded with both artillery and air forces with very good results despite rainy weather. They must be out of supplies now. Thats something like 120,000 KMT troops cut off plus another 100,000 that have been smashed and are now overstacking a hex not close to their supply sources by at least 40% The Chinese must be burning incredible amounts of supply!

Burma: The xAKL TF sighted near Rangoon was a supply TF after all! It was found at Rangoon today. G4Ms didnt find the target, but 30 Ki-43s swept the adjacent hex, Pegu, with 20 more Ki-43s flying LRCAP. Sweepers went in at 6000 ft only and LRCAP was at 15,000. The results were VERY good: 12 H81s were encountered and to protect the convoy their patrol altitude was set to 9000 ft. What ensued was a low altitude furball favoring the Ki-43 with 4:1 numerical superiority for the IJ. 8 Hawks were shot down for the loss of only one Ki-43 and its pilot. The AVG has reportedly lost 51 of its 90 fighters already.

Malaya: British units have now retreated to Singapore and Kota Bahru is empty. IJ moves in.

DEI: Kendari shock attack achieves 2:1 and drops forts to 1. Dutch take heavier losses than IJ. IJN CL Sqdn finds and destroys 2 xAKs that were apparently carrying what looks like better part of a regiment. No units were evacuated from Kendari so these came from somewhere else:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 70,107, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CL Ayase
CL Minase
DD Isonami
DD Uranami

Allied Ships
xAK Islami, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Fairfield City, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Allied ground losses:
608 casualties reported
Squads: 45 destroyed, 35 disabled
Non Combat: 53 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Vehicles lost 50 (50 destroyed, 0 disabled)

CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 8,000 yards
Japanese launch Long Lance torpedoes at 8,000 yards before allies detect Japanese presence

There is probably enough troops ashore now so the invasion force will leave now that we still havent taken any hits from all the enemy subs around. Yamashiro and Ise will bombard first though.

PI: -

South Pacific: PM deliberate attack suffers slightly more casualties than the enemy though much less squads as alright destroyed. It also drops forts to 1. Good news that! PM will fall into Japanese hands within the week, at latest when the last part of the division that is now marching across the Owen Stanleys arrives.

KB finds an enemy SAG with multiple cruisers and a small cargo TF between Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The cruiser TF is close and has good DL but no strikes are launched. [:(] D3A1s however hit an xAKL and an old 4-pipe DD at Luganville.

USN CVs: now probably between Hawaii and Christmas Island heading South. Heavy radio messages along the route for 3rd day moving South about 8 hex/da. The CVs were sighted approaching Hawaii(my guess is at least 2 of them then) 10-ish days ago so their location is pretty certain.

Submarines: IJN sub destroys an xAK 1000-ish nm East of Hawaii and another destroys an xAKL at Luganville. No escorts looked for it so the DD attacked by D3As may have sunk too. USN subs enter shallow waters around Kyushu - ASW groups and mine layers are sent out to hopefully give them some headache. Dutch subs attack IJN warships near Singkawang as well as near Kendari, but dont score hits. One Dutch submarine suffers multiple ASW hits near Singkawang.

China: a lone corps that entered Kanhisien yesterday is nuked from the air and then hit by the artillery death star. A KMT corps is routed in the North between Loyang and Sian with very light IJ losses but over 60 enemy squads destroyed. At Loyang a deliberate attack is ordered for tomorrow.

The doomed KMT stack:
Ground combat at Loyang (87,43)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 44291 troops, 344 guns, 107 vehicles, Assault Value = 1487

Defending force 17273 troops, 90 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 309

24th Group Army
39th Group Army
3rd Construction Regiment

Burma: Ki-43s sweep Pegu and Ki-21s bomb it. No bomber losses. Ki-43s score 3-4 against the Hawks and the casualties were all escorts... The march across the river towards Pegu begins! IJ has 936 AV in Imperial Guards Div, 33rd Division, 14th Tank regiment, 2 arty regiments and a 23-AV Cavalry regiment that will join soon.

Malaya: Singapore bombed and the bombers hit pretty well. 4 bombers lost to flak... 2 of the 3 cut-off British forces is attacked by IJ troops and the enemy suffers badly.

DEI: BB bombardment of Kendari is one the best I have seen performed by the IJN:

Night Naval bombardment of Kendari at 70,106

Japanese Ships
BB Yamashiro
BB Fuso
DD Yugiri
DD Asagiri
DD Shikinami
DD Shirakumo
DD Shinonome

Allied ground losses:

Kendari Base Force

The IJ units are in good shape and the infantry unit will shock tomorrow. Kendari will then probably fall.

Allies move in A-24s that attack IJ shipping from Manado. A medium size xAK is lost. IJN CVs retreated overnight though.

South Pacific: CarDivs I and III advance deep into hostile waters, now near New Caledonia. No enemy sighted today by either CarDivs or the reconnaissance floatplane cruisers. Enemy air search finds them well though and Zeros dont bother to shoot down the float planes either. Port Moresby gets bombed by G4Ms but 4 are lost to flak... 2 xAKs damaged by CD gunfire sink as the invasion fleet begins its withdrawal. Manado falls to the IJ as first troops arrive at Tassafaronga, Guadalcanal.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (5/21/2014 4:49:12 PM)

The purpose of the KB raid is cover the amphib TFs carrying some important land units to Solomons and New Guinea. These include 2 air HQs, a base force, 3 aviation support battalions and 4 small SNLF landings at various places I want to secure as well as a defensive CD + Marine unit that will get placed at Lunga because its very likely to get bombarded sooner or later. Some search aircraft have already been moved in. So far it looks like the enemy is running for its life so I dont think the KB will catch much shipping.

Just caught up on your AAR Sir. Good solid work.

Have you deployed the 9th Air Fleet from Kyushu yet? I kept there until the end of March filling out the LCU as well as training the air crews.

Any thoughts/comments with the Mod? What has your opponent said?

Thanks!

Thanks.

I havent deployed the 9th Air Fleet or the 2nd Air Flotilla at the same base under the former's command yet. I've considered sending them to Hokkaido and Kuriles, but those bases havent been built much yet.

I definitely like the reformation of the IJNAF, CVs and the sub fleet but I'm torn with the surface units. On the other hand there are some fine ships being built, but in the early expansion phase have myself always been limited more or less by the ground units and not ships. I guess in RA the IJ is in better position to expand to South Pacific though. I think the initially somewhat stronger Allies balance it out though, and the 2 new filled-out dive bomber squads + the CVL mean that invasions need to be better protected. All in all I havent played this game enough to be able to compare accurately. Besides everyone plays their own way and every campaign is different.

I've always like the looks of the J2M but I guess I can do without it. N1K is cool too and is available earlier now, as are armored Zeros with 4 cannons. [8D]

We decided to modify the game a little to my suggestion. All Ki-61s except the Id were given 1 service rating point less while Ki-84a was postponed by 2 months to 6/44. I feel that with these changes at least Ki-61-Ia and Ib plus the IIKAIb will have a role within the IJAAF as defensive air superiority fighters and bomber interceptors and will be well worth building.

Lack of resources and expanded factories really hurt though. Theres just no way I would ever need 430/month of Ha-35 engines(20 were still repairing and I stopped that from happening) especially as there are now less planes that need it from late 1942 onwards, mid and late model Zeros using the Ha-33. 300 Ha-32 engines are almost overkill too. I stopped the Musashi and with some Naval and Merchant stocking there is basically no HI surplus for now. This should change by Early 1943 when most of the big ships have arrived and there'll be no real need to build naval points into reserve.

The starting engine factories and lack of both HI surplus and strat resources in HI have effected my industrial plans. For example I have let the Ki-48 factory to keep going as they are still much better than the 1E bombers and the IJAAF desperately needs 2Es. I have compared my own previous games as well as this one to everyone else and I for whatever reason seem to suffer much less air losses and have only a fraction of their air production... In the 2 games that reached 250+ turns I was still losing less planes than the Allies.

China:

Loyang: the KMT stack loses over 100 squads in deliberate attack. Bombardment ordered for tomorrow.

Near Nanyang: the cut-off KMT stack has 1100 AV!!!! The deliberate attack of course doesnt go too well. Adhacent hex has a fresh IJ division and the terrain is clear so they still get mauled badly every day. More Chinese units approach the "bombing grounds" from the West.

Burma: Ki-43s sweep Pegu and today's score is 2-0 for the IJ. 3 cut-off British units approach Moulmein from the South(they left Tavoy into IJ hands a week ago) marching along the coast. IJ reinforcements units will need to take care of these, plus theres a company in pursuit already.

Malaya: IJ arrives at Johore Bahru!

DEI: Kendari falls!!! Airfield is in really bad shape though and needs repairs. Only naval search aircraft were flown in today. A-24s and Hudsons attack withdrawing IJ fleet. 3 Hudsons are shot down. One large xAK will probably go down and become the only loss of the operation.

Kendari deliberate attack drops forts to 0 and destroys 4 squads while losing 10 as disabled. Going well so far.

South Pacific: 2 xAKs go down from damage suffered from CD guns. KB finds nothing to attack, now South of New Caledonia.

Submarines: a USN submarine hits 4 mines at Fusan and goes down. [:)]

Home Islands: well well, whos this? IJN defensive fleet that is the CarDiv III sorties and air units are prepared. Thats over 100 Netties plus assorted other strike aircraft and some 150 fighters(training units). They could be just some small ships that have escaped the PI area but I doubt it. Some USN CVs are almost for sure near Christmas Island and another force probably East of Hawaii as I-23 was sighted by planes today, so my bet is on surface raider group.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (5/22/2014 11:00:07 AM)

Also near Batavia a CL Sqdn under LRCAP finally finds the Dutch PT boats and destroys 1 of them. Dutch air units attack the IJN force the 5th or 6th time already and this time manage to lose 15 of their number to no IJ loss. IJAAF gets its first fighter aces as 3 Ki-43 pilots score their 5th kills. At the same time 2 pilots of the Yamada Det score their 9th kills. 20 pilots of the Yamada Detachment share 71 kills between them. The Group has only lost 3 pilots, and I think 1 or 2 of those in landing accidents lol. I really dont understand why these Dutch strike aircraft are not preserved until the eventual landings at Java where they could be used to attack xAKs and such and not destroyers under fighter umbrella.

China: the meatgrinder in the northern front keeps going. The KMT does not countered the weaker and weakened IJ army near Nanyang but keeps retreating. IJ air attacks today are even stronger than before, as a new Ki-21 unit arrived the theater yesterday. Chinese SB bombers hit Kanhisien but dont do much. Lets see if I can gather fighters to maybe ambush them tomorrow.

Burma: Blenheims bomb IJ advancing IJ troops(no hits) and Ki-21s bomb the waiting British with moderate damage. Forts cant be very high.

Malaya: IJA arrives to Kota Bahru(which is now occupied) with 330 AV. I need a division more before we enter the city proper.

DEI: xAK hurt by A-24s yesterday is sunk. Sorong invaded!

PI: -

South Pacific: Carriers still dont find anything to attack. They'll be heading home now.

Home Islands: the Allied TF sighted yesterday causes some TFs to retreat away from it during the night phase but search aircraft dont find it in the day. If it went East, the CarDiv III can possibly make the contact tomorrow. Some air search coverage is ordered for the sea East of Formosa.

Submarines: USN sub finds IJ SAG at Port Moresby but misses its 4 torps.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (5/24/2014 5:44:56 PM)

I also notised that all this time the one size-150 oil well in Manchuria has been just sitting there without supplies. It starts half repaired. 9680 oil points wasted because I didnt remember that over 10k supplies arent automatically drawn in if there are factories in need or repairs. Yet I've made sure that everywhere else where needed I have 15-20k supplies. Doh.

Brunei has been used an an oil port for a while now. We have F1M squadron looking for subs, Ki-43s flying CAP in the case someone wants to bomb the oil wells at Miri, a big minefield also at Brunei(no tender yet, I have about 20 of them still converting) and a dedicated surface ASW unit of 2 sub chasers. Oil and fuel gets shippied to Cam Ranh Bay in escorted capacity 1250 tankers and from there to Kyushu on bigger ones with the fast long-range PCs for escorts. Aerial ASW all the way plus a gauntlet of surface ASW, mass air search, a dedicated AASW squadron(still training partly) and minefields in some certain shallow hexes near Kyushu. A USN sub just sailed through a mine trap but got away with it. I hope it'll return .[:)]

China: KMT Corps routed from Kanhisien. Very heavy casualties - it cant be much more than a skeleton crew any more.

Burma: RAF doesnt want to fight in the air but bombs advancing IJA troops - frustratingly just 10 Blenheims manage to fully destroy 1 squad. IJAAF's own strike goes well too and disables some 15 squads. River crossing in 2 days.

Malaya: One of the 3 cut-off British forces surrender!!!

I'm not sure how important exactly these units were... Can someone comment? The device losses above were only about 1/2 or even 1/3 of their initial strength, they had been bombed for weeks and retreated several times.

Temuloh DA drops forts to 0. Here 2 Bridages and 3 Battalions + an arty regiment have been left behind.

DEI: Sorong falls! A-24s attempt to bomb an IJN CA SAG at Ternate and BBTF nearby but Zeros shoot down 3. Bombers score no hits.

South Pacific: CVs still find nothing. Last part of 53rd Inf Div moves to Port Moresby. Enemy airfield still damaged --> forts are 1. Some fighters spotted there too today so a sweep is ordered. AMCs land a small Marine force at Milne Bay.

Submarines: USN sub duds on a PB near Truk. At Home Islands, USN subs have arrived near Tokyo too.

R&D: Last A6M3 factory is ready. I didnt R&D it for a single point though but switched them all to A6M3b immediately. Now 3x30 R&D and 10% towards 1-month advance done already. I want to have this armored Zero ASAP.

China: Liuchow had enemy fighters yesterday and a CAP-trap is anticipated, so the short ranged bombers were stood down and long ranged ones given closer but less important targets. Over Kanhisien Ki-44 prototypes and Ki-27s ambush Chinese bombers and shoot down 3! The Chinese stack in Loyang hex is in real trouble as today it loses over 40 squads for just 2 or 3 disabled IJA. Near Sinyang the massive KMT stack is bombarded and is probably low on supply as theres no counter-battery fire and some squads are destroyed. It still has over 1000 raw AV, but is more or less doomed...

Also notice the 17th Indian Division. Is this a unit that needs to be bought out from India, or can it be combined from smaller units like the 1st Burma Div?

The cherry on the top of the victory is 9 Blenheims that attempted another bombing run on IJ troops but faced a low altitude CAP of 14 Ki-43s. All 9 were shot down for 1 lost Ki-43(pilot survived).

Malaya: the 2 British pockets take more losses. Weather grounds the bombers.

DEI: A-24s attack IJ amphibious TF loading troops at Ternate. I expected them to be grounded after yesterday's incident but no... 2 xAKs are hit while Zeros shot down 3 of the Banshees.

South Pacific: Deliberate attack at Port Moresby goes fairly well:

Ground combat at Port Moresby (98,130)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 12529 troops, 114 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 414

Defending force 7823 troops, 71 guns, 34 vehicles, Assault Value = 206

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Allied adjusted defense: 169

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

We'll wait a day or two and attack again.

Milne Bay falls to Japanese, a couple of other places invaded or occupies by tiny units.

KB finds no prey.

USN CVs: now probably South of Fiji, on the latitude of northern New Zealand.

Home Islands: The USN raider TF is sighted again. Surface assets directed to hunt it down.

Submarines: I-22 hit near Sydney while a USN sub gets hit near Tokyo. Again it sailed through a mine field.

RAF bombers over Pegu meet IJAAF Ki-43s and Chinese bombers attacking Kanhisien are intercepted by Ki-27s and a prototype Ki-44.

I'm not sure how important exactly these units were... Can someone comment? The device losses above were only about 1/2 or even 1/3 of their initial strength, they had been bombed for weeks and retreated several times.

In vanilla the Burma troops are all junk, worse than RTA! Although, if you give them 6 months r and r & start to upgrade their units they get better. Still, they are better off dead and killing the AA is always good. [:)]

Yeah I guess better than nothing. And they wont be defending Singapore.

January 22 1942

China: mass bombings and artillery bombardments are quickly consuming the 2 pockets. They used to have over 1700 AV together, but theres barely 1200 left.

Burma: everything the Allies have in Burma is now retreating!!! I'll try to drop the paratroopers to Prome but some of them are still being flown back from Port Blair. Only 28 AV's worth of them ready at Bangkok. They'll be dropped on the 24th no matter what - I dont want those divisions to escape!

Malaya: -

DEI: Allied recon aircraft over Brunei. Dunno why Brunei is reconed and not Miri, if the Allies are preparing an attack.

PI: IJ infantry regiment an a tank unit start loading aboard transports. They will be assaulting Ambon together with 2 other regiments within 5 days!

South Pacific: KB nearing Ndeni, an enemy SAG TF with multiple heavy and light cruisers is sighted about 300 nm NE of Fiji by one of the scout cruisers.

Home Islands: USN raider TF is sighted again, now 6 hex West of Chichi Jima. Both today and yesterday the TF was reported to have 2 ships with the other being an "AD". That sounds like merchant cruiser raiders.

Submarines: E14Y-equipped sub sights a large xAP convoy 600 nm NE of Hawaii - 2 subs will attempt to inetrcept!
