Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (6/21/2014 7:08:17 PM)

Okay. I ran a test with 30 x EXP-65 Ki-45-KAIds against 12 B-24Ds, both flying at 20,000. B-24 squad I think had only 60 EXP and flew to extended range of 18. This test was repeated twice with similar results: Ki-45s kept attacking and attacking and shrugging off gunner hits like nothing... And not hitting. Only 2 B-24s were damaged (one star, *) in the first attack and only one in the second. Not one bomber went down to any reasons.

My analysis: the UP-guns are not used at all in daytime air combat. Dont try it, it wont work. Even the lower 6 attacks that went all the way from range 6 to range 1 resulted in no hits. With 2 20mms, CL or F, and a 37mm gun there would surely have been some hits.

Lowpe: sorry but that goes to the Ki-46-IIIKAI as well as it too has the CL 37mm gun, except even less accuracy.

China: artillery ready in 5 days to start grinding away the defenders of Sian.

Burma: 2 squadrons of RAF Buffalos (!) sweep Northern Burma. 77th Sentai was resting today. Blenheims attacking Prome lost 1 of their number to 47th Chutai.

South Pacific: CVL Charlotte withdraws towards Fiji(now probably somewhere between New Caledonia and New Hebrides). A 2-ship TF that probably has CL Perth and an escort crawl in the general direction of Brisbane. They only make 200 nm in 24 hours, or 8 knots. 8 IJN submarines will attempt to intercept, but unfortunately none of them have E14 float planes. Near Sydney the USN CVBG manages to avoid all submarines and is not sighted today, but its aircraft are.

Luganville operation begins. 2 of the 4 amphibious task forces merge and will meet the 3rd before target. Kido Butai receives 15,000 tons of fuel and is ordered close to the estimated limit of enemy air search. I hope KB wont be seen tomorrow.

Submarines: An IJN sub first takes a couple of direct depth charge hits in the Maldives, Indian Ocean, and then misses a cargo ship. It'll return to base now. A USN sub also misses its attack on a merchant near Formosa.

China: attack towards Ankang begins. The Chinese seem to move 2 more Corps to the defensive positions across the river but IJAAF bombings are very effective - the Chinese have basically no anti-aircraft weapons, and the terrain is flat... The defenders will stand no chance against 4 IJ divisions and 2 tank units.

Burma: 3rd division retreats the withdrawing British again, and a rifle battalion surrenders:

Ground combat at 60,44 (near Shwebo)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 13072 troops, 120 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 443

Defending force 612 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 21

DEI: IJN light cruiser squadron destroys 3 small ships fleeing Singapore. About 15 motor launches were scuttled in the port.

3rd Ku S-1 sweeps Soerabaja from Makassar and(as expected) shoots down 12 Demons and Hawk-75s to no loss!

Dili falls as the defenders surrender. The entire Timor is now under Japanese control.

Deliberate attack at Tarakan drops forts to 0 and casualties again favor the Japanese. It'll fall any day now...

South Pacific: Submarines fail to make contact with any Allied ships. Bummer. Kido Butai and CS Mizuho(sneaking closer to Fiji, in a mission to provide some situational awareness and early warning in the area) remain undetected! By the looks of it(air search, sub reports, sign intel reports of heavy radio activity), it seems that the USN carriers went to Sydney. D minus 2 days.

Submarines: A RN submarine hits an AMC near Palembang. This too would have went raiding in the Indian Ocean, and was on its way to refuel first. Almost all the merchant raiders have either torpedo or bomb holes now. Luckily only one has been lost for good.

R&D: A6M3b Zero accelerated to 4/42! The 3 research factories are now changed to A6M4.

And heres the map now. As you can see, in the Dutch East Indies only Northern Sumatra, Java, Christmas Island, Cocos and 1 patrol plane base on Borneo remain in Allied hands.

Every plane should have a use, the trick is finding it.

Perhaps the Dinah is expensive rear area trainer.[:D]

China: KMT corps retreated again in the Northern front. River crossing towards Ankang in 2 days - Chinese have 4 Corps defending but under mass aerial bombings, tanks and 4 infantry divisions they should stand no chance. The Chinese are known to have some depth in their defenses, though, with 4-5 more Corps in the defensive terrain behind the first defenders.

Burma: Ki-43s sweep Chittacong and meet a mix of enemy fighters: Buffaloes, Hurricane Is, Hurricane IIs and AVG's Hawks. 6 pilots and 9 planes are lost for 11 confirmed victories. Not a very good trade(especially as 3 enemy losses were only Buffaloes) but the Japanese were outnumbered.

[image]http://i.imgur.com/VlAhrTK.png[/image]

DEI: aviation support unit at Koepang in 4-ish days.

Submarines: IJN mine layer hit at Woodlark Island, will probably sink tomorrow. This TF was ordered to stop unloading but they stayed there unloading and a useful ship was lost because of it... Another USN sub hits 2 xAKs carrying engineers near Truk, and one sinks.

South Pacific: Luganville landings within 48 hours. Allied air patrols find the Kido Butai as well as the amphibious task force. Lots of enemy radio activity at Sydney and Melbourne.

Also B-17s hit a small base on the Northern coast of New Guinea. No garrison or planes there, basically a useless strike. Allies also use B-17s in naval search role: several were sighted near the KB.

The naval maneuvers for tomorrow are intended to throw off enemy submarines that will for sure go after the transports and surface combatants, while KB will position itself between the enemy(most likely position) and the amphibious force. Submarines(about 25 are in 4 days sail from Luganville) and float plane scout cruisers screen.

A 3/4 of a Group of G4M1s was flown to Tulagi. The size of the airfield means only 1/2 to 3/4 will sortie against any target and OPS losses are increased, but they can still add a lot of punch. Torpedo delivery range is easily to Southern end of New Caledonia, although they're unlikely to sortie let alone find the targets quite that far.

Luganville's air field is still only size 1. Lots of bombers and aux(=Catalinas) there, over 50(!).

China: bad weather grounds most attack sorties. KMT near Sian has started to bombard the IJ troops.

Burma: a disaster happens when Army and Navy bombers strike British troops near Prome. AVG's Hawks shoot down almost 20 bombers, and most are lost with their crews. Again an unexpected move by an enemy who is known to have little fighter airframes to spare. They should have expected another sweep, and had that happened they'd have lost more planes and pilots at a bad ratio. Blenheims hit Rangoon(little damage) and Taung Gyi(why?), one bomber shot down by Ki-43s. IJAAF fighters will sweep tomorrow.

DEI: Zeros sweep Soerabaja again and shoot down 7 fighters to no loss.

Submarines: one xAK is lost to a USN sub on the coast of Hokkaido while the CM near Woodlark cant control fires and flooding from the yesterday's hit and needs to be scuttled. Lots of enemy subs sighted near Palembang: they're looking for tankers...

South Pacific:

Amphibious force: advances unopposed and reaches the coast of Espiritu Santo!

Surface units: advance unopposed as planned

Enemy forces: the enemy TF at Luganville flees. Air search finds 1 TF at Efate, another between Efate and New Caledonia and a 3rd between Luganville and Fiji.

Land based air: G4Ms from Tulagi launch both AM and PM but find target(enemy TF at Efate) only once. Only 8 planes attack and miss the target, a transport TF, due to bad weather and target priority(they attacked escorting DDs).

Kido Butai: advances to ordered coordinates. KB's fighters shoot down 2 Catalinas and anti-aircraft fire a patrolling B-17E(!!). In PM phase KB launches a strike to Efate:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Efate at 120,154

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 110 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 41 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 80
B5N2 Kate x 48
D3A1 Val x 48

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
xAP D'Artagnan, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD O'Brien
DD Fanning, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAP Cap Padaran, Bomb hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAP Cap Tourane, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Orne, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
Vehicles lost 8 (5 destroyed, 3 disabled)

This was an extreme-range 8-hex strike so B5Ns only used bombs, and missed all but 2. The enemy merchants probably all sunk and seemed to take some vehicles with them. Probably engineering vehicles, and probably supplies. Those were some big transports!

IJN submarines: sight plenty of float planes and lots of carrier aircraft to the South West, between Efate and Fiji. This has not happened for the past 5 days so thats most probably an enemy CVBG there.

Thoughts: for tomorrow I need to make sure the troops will get ashore. If enough get ashore to not get repelled by defending troops, I can always bring more until the place falls, while KB makes sure the Allies wont bombard or reinforce. KB did not attack with all planes which was a disappointment as there were more targets(a big xAK TF) well in range. Crap weather. No planes were lost today and torpedo storages are full.

[image]http://i.imgur.com/QTp8tt2.png[/image]

Kido Butai will dash SOUTH, Chioyda will move towards Brisbane and Mizuho towards Fiji. Hyuga will bombard and then stay off the shore to protect the amphibious force. The amphibious TF is now given orders to not change course or retreat for any reason. CA Aoba Sqdn is trailing BB Hyuga and will reach the area tomorrow - it was sighted today near Ndeni. Its behind the others in a pure surface action role from tomorrow onwards.

What a cute French sub. Is it any good?

Good strike with smallish bombs no less.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (6/24/2014 10:19:17 PM)

Actually in this scenario both D3A1 and A2 have normal range of 8. 250 kg hits, but unfortunately only about 1/3 of strike aircraft flew.

China: bombers flew again, hitting the enemy hard in the open terrain on the road to Ankang as well as at Hengyang. Chinese bombers flew too and scored a couple of hits to IJ troops near Nanyang.

Burma: Allied fighters grounded(as expected) and sweeps find nothing. Blenheims sortie to Lashio, Taung Gyi and Rangoon again.

DEI: attack at Tarakan fails. Again.

PI: deliberate attack at Iba achieves only 1:2 with 1:1 losses. The defending Philippine and US units have high fatigue and disruption.

Submarines: a USN sub destroys a 8000-ton capacity tanker near Formosa. There are over 40 planes flying naval search and AASW and 4 ASW surface patrols in the same area, heck 2 in the same hex, and they cant see the subs before they attack. Japs subs get attacked long before they get near coast everywhere where they are. IJN subs again do nothing. Almost all of them have highly aggressive captains now, but there doesnt seem to be a difference.

South Pacific:

BB Hyuga Sqdn. and amphibious force advance to Luganville unopposed.

Night Naval bombardment of Luganville at 120,150

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
PBY-5A Catalina: 2 damaged

BB Hyuga firing at 148th Field Artillery Battalion
CA Kako firing at Luganville

Wow, an IJN bombardment that actually achieves something.

Ground combat at Luganville (120,150)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1477 troops, 31 guns, 15 vehicles, Assault Value = 63

Defending force 7900 troops, 117 guns, 15 vehicles, Assault Value = 263

Assaulting units:

148th Field Artillery Battalion
114th USAAF Base Force
A Det USN Port Svc

Defending units:
1st Sasebo Assault Division
84th Naval Guard Unit

So IJ has AV, number, tank and firepower superiority at Luganville. Troops ashore with very few casualties while at least that Field Artillery Battalion must have some fatigue and disruption.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (6/28/2014 11:53:53 AM)

Thoughts: my opponent plays like a madman and Japanese air search is crap. There was a scout cruiser and lots of air search H8Ks patrolling that very direction at maximum normal range(and some more from Makin) precisely because I wanted to see if anything approached from that direction. There are now over 40 submarines out of the screenshot but they didnt see anything either.

That turn the other USN carrier TF was almost surely within KB range but luck and weather protected it. Allies have gotten away with some seriously risky situations again and again in this game... There was no way of knowing what KB will do and still it was decided to send carriers that close. With the move I had first planned to do there would have been a carrier battle. Thats the 3rd time already.

February 24, 1942

China: Chinese bombers strike again. I think I will LRCAP over the troops tomorrow, maybe Allies think IJ fighters cant defend there...

Burma: -

DEI: G4Ms strike Soerabaja's port and destroy 2 small ships and a harbor defense motor launch.

Submarines: lots of USN subs off the Northern coast of Formosa. IJN sub finally gets to attack the convoy it had been shadowing for 2 days approx 1000 nm East of Hawaii and sinks an xAK.

Sub attack near Fraser Island at 102,156

SS RO-67

Allied Ships
DD Sands
CA Pensacola
CL De Ruyter
CL Java
DD King
DD John D. Ford

SS RO-67 launches 2 torpedoes at DD Sands
RO-67 diving deep ....

And what were these ships doing?!? They were in the Coral Sea 2 days after KB had been spotted. My opponent apparently loves to sail his ships just outside of KB's strike range.... Or doesnt care much about losses.

South Pacific: Allies vanish, as expected. The enemy TF between New Caledonia and Australia had several light cruisers and was sighted heading back to Brisbane or Sydney. Allied shipping fled Noumea towards Sydney too. Despite the area having now over 30 Japanese submarines, none make contact with the enemy.

B-17s hit Port Moresby's port and manage to lose one of their number somehow. 2 B-17s fly ground attack sortie from Noumea to Luganville but dont hit anything. Luganville flooded by Allied submarines... And Luganville falls!!! 4 B-17Es are torched on the ground together with 2 Catalinas. One more B-17E flying naval search gets shot down by KB's Zeros.

OUCH! The survivors retreated to a woods + rough hex but I doubt that with those casualties, they will be much harder to retreat again.

Over the battlefield Chinese bombers attempt to help their comrades on the ground but face Ki-43 LRCAP that destroys 4 of the 5 attacking SBs and Hudsons.

Burma: IJAAF sweeps Chittacong, facing a mix of 2 Hurricane types, Buffalos and Hawks. It isnt pretty. Despite numerical advantage and arriving to the area in large packets(defending CAP 1-2 planes at a time) 15 Hayabusas are lost against only 5 Allied. 3:1 losses despite having many advantages. This will only become worse with time.

DEI: Ki-48s from Palembang hit Batavia's port and score hits on torpedo boats and floating dry docks. S.23 Empire flying boats attack IJN battleships near Timor. They score no bomb hits.

PI: Manila bombarded with good results. I wonder if the Allied troops here are about to be short on supplies.

South Pacific: B-17s strike Port Moresby again(1 runway hit) and face a detachment of Zeros: one of the bombers hit by Zeros is confirmed shot down later and anti-aircraft fire scores a direct hit and a kill on a B-17E! If the Allies continue their air strikes here all the AAA units brought across the Pacific will become useful.

B-25s strike Luganville from Noumea but also dont score hits.

Submarines: IJN submarines destroy a large xAK in the middle of nowhere far to the East of Hawaii and another from the force that fled Noumea towards Sydney. These were both ordered intercepts that would not have been possible without E14Y float planes. Still, I was disappointed that the convoy near Sydney was intercepted only once, as there were 11 boats in the area with 6-8 along their path of travel, and the area apparently had little to no Allied air patrols and no surface patrols.

Imperial High Command's fighting morale is on a rise.

China: bad weather grounds most bomber sorties. A Chinese corps gets routed once again in the far north. Artillery bombardment near Sian doesnt achieve much, but more arty units arrived today bringing another 200-ish guns.

Some of the enemy units remain in the hex and I think will be destroyed tomorrow. The rest retreated to Katha and they can use the railroad to get out before 33rd gets to them again by the dirt road.

DEI: Catalinas and S.23 Empires from Darwin attack IJN ships near Timor but this time face Tainan Ku S-1's Zeros: 7 Catalinas and 2 Empires are shot down. Such a waste... IJA attack at Tarakan fails once again.

PI: artillery bombardment at Manila achieves good results again. Defenders must be short on supplies, so IJA will keep bombarding. IJA attack at Iba achieves 1:1 odds and equal losses for both sides. Iba's defenders seem to be short on supplies.

Submarines: The 12 submarines that were in the hex the Allied merchant convoy passed through near Sydney fail to attack. So 3 days and 30+ individual submarine intercepts(counting being in the same hex as an interception) and only one attack. In contrast, under ASW surface patrols and very high air search and air ASW(over 50 aircraft of different types), a single already sighted USN submarine attacks and sinks a small tanker in Formosa strait without its escorts even attempting to retaliate.

In the NE Pacific the 3 IJN subs that have been sighting enemy TFs for the past days also fail, yet again, to attack and today lose track of their prey.

Allied search and patrol plane losses: so far 66 US Catalinas, 40 Dutch flying boats, 16 British and Australian Catalinas and Empires, and 36 float planes from all Allies(none Dutch). In only 3 months. I hope that hurts them.

Allied Heavy bomber losses: 23 B-17Ds and 23 B-17Es. 46 out of the 370, 12%, or so available through the first 13 months. That has to have some effect too.

Flying boats getting slaughtered, artillery bombardment near Sian and Tainan Ku at Koepang.

February 27, 1942

China: 2nd bombardment, now with extra arty, goes well. The Chinese may have supply issues as they dont seem to fire back much.

Burma: AVG again LRCAPs a hex at extreme range(for H81) and despite Ki-43s being based in the adjacent hex, none join to help the bombers. 7 G4Ms and 2 1-engine Ki-51s are lost for 1 Hawk. 77th Sentai sweeps the enemy fighter base these originated from but encounter none. Luckily the bombers were shot down over friendly troops so aircrew losses weren't, for once, 100%.

DEI: What seems to be a Royal Navy carrier escorted by USN battleships(they are probably cruisers?) appears in the Timor Sea! 18 Swordfish torpedo bombers sortie to Koepang - but are not escorted. Tainan Hikotai shoots down them all and PO2 Izumi, H. achieves his 11th and 12th victories! G4Ms from Kendari fail to find their targets. I guess the Allies were looking for torpedo hits on the battleships.

[img]http://i.imgur.com/wA3LrFI.png[/img]

South Pacific: quiet

Central Pacific: CarDiv V finds prey! A lone 5300-ton tanker in oil or fuel cargo escorted by 2 old Clemson destroyers. They all get sunk. Even float planes attack and score some 60 kg bomb hits. :) I had hoped for a better target, and unfortunately...:

...Submarines: I-28 sights a large tanker convoy on its way from San Diego to Hawaii just out of CarDiv V's strike range. Heavy volume radio traffic reported at Pearl so CarDiv V will not take the risk but will instead withdraw.

I hope that attack will tie some enemy assets to escorting convoys even deep behind the lines.

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (6/30/2014 3:40:30 PM)

During the last week IJN has also received some reinforcements: CL Noshiro(Agano class) and 3 submarines. 2 of the subs were sent to operate from Singapore, the 3rd from Truk, and Noshiro was sent to Marianas. Together with her sister Yahagi, she is now one of the only 2 ships in the Navy that are equipped with an air-search radar, and are invaluable as CV escorts.

I wonder who these are... Saratoga and Lexington returning to base I guess.

So after the fall of enemy defenses in Burma they have already lost circa 100 combat squads and 200-ish non-combat squads while retreating. Plus lots of vehicles and guns. Theres 2 Indian battalions and what is probably an engineer unit of some kind trapped near Toungoo. They'll be dealt away with shortly.

Timor Sea: Things dont go quite according to plan... Enemy withdraws to West as was expected. First, Fuso and Yamashiro fail to make contact and overshot the enemy. Then CA Ashigara meets the enemy and gets sunk by a battleship line:

Night + Thunder --> max 3000 yard engagement where the enemy has massive firepower advantage. Japanese destroyers get to launch their torpedo attacks and score a hit on Royal Sovereign. CA Ashigara is lost. Notice the rather interesting composition of the enemy force... A fast BC, a BB, CAs and CLs mixed in with mere 2 escorts.

Then BBs Kongo and Haruna make contact with the enemy force slowed down by the torpedo hit. Their big guns are nearly out of ammo after the bombardment and amphibious missions, but they absorb fire and some hits. In a hit of some seriously bad luck, a small destroyer is lost to a torpedo launched by BC Repulse! Destroyers launch a highly successful torpedo attack!

Torpedo bombers at Kendari sortie again as enemy carrier remains in range but they again fail to find the target.

What I think happened was that the enemy reacted away from Fuso and Yamashiro and ended meeting task forces they shouldnt have. That, or the carrier reacted away only after the first battles. Either way, didnt go as expected, but I still think Japan came up as the winner. In that weather it would have been, I think, best to have just 3-4 CLs leading double the number of DDs. Ashigara's loss hurts a lot and the DDs were good too, but the enemy losses here were NOT meaningless. BBs Fuso and Yamashiro remain in the area and are in position to attack again. They were not sighted by enemy air search. Fuel is now a problem for them as they used flank speed that, in hindsight, was completely unnecessary...

South Pacific 5 B-25s and 3 B-17s bombs Luganville, scoring 1 runway hit. Defending Zeros lose 3 of the number(!) shooting down 2 B-25s.

In Victory Points, today's naval battle losses were 410 Allied to 75 Japanese. Pretty good ratio at 5,47 to 1. Allied points don't include the destroyers of which I think 1 will go down or at least be out of action very long.

[image]http://i.imgur.com/4u9ydQF.png[/image]

Haruna's fires have been exhausted already and Kongo is safe at Koepang. Kongo's escorts will go back to escort Haruna. 2 DDs behind Haruna and her bodyguard escort a 3rd, damaged, destroyer.

[image]http://i.imgur.com/kbv3EHo.png[/image]

BB Yamato became available today. I think she will stay in the home islands for at least a while now.

China: IJA attack on the Ankang road achieves 1:1 odds - and Chinese casualties are higher, including 20 combat squads destroyed. The terrain helps the defenders a lot here.

Burma: Chittagong reported to have ~50 fighters and 30 ships in the port these fighters are probably protecting. IJAAF will tomorrow sweep the base with 2 full Sentais, over 80 fighters.

DEI: a 4th enemy task force is briefly discovered by a submarine on the coast. The enemy fleet withdraws towards Perth. Fuso and Yamashiro fail to make contact and their float planes find nothing, but they are themselves found by Allied float planes. Haruna disbands into port at Koepang - her initial, minor damage repairs alone will take almost 3 months with the port and extra naval support available at Koepang, ouch! I'm planning to invade Java within a week and once Java Sea is secure, Haruna will be moved to Singapore for repairs.

On Sumatra, Bengkalis falls!

Submarines: a Free French submarine destroys a cargo ship from the Luganville amphibious TF that finished unloading supplies and is was heading home.

A fresh exp-80 division is bought out from Manchuria Army. They'll start boarding the transports while I need to make decisions on where to use it...

Lowpe -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (7/4/2014 2:14:57 PM)

Good work. Exciting!

Allied task force composition left a lot to be desired I think.

Repulse is one of my favorite Allied ships....she can be very dangerous, and has lots of good uses. The Allies will miss her!

On enemy TF composition: I think that too and have noticed it several times, mostly when a sub of mine has gotten to attack.

This despite half of the Allied fighters being puny Buffalos and IJAAF having, again, numerical superiority, as judging by combat reports the Allies dont seem to have a radar so their planes arrived to the fight in pairs and threes mostly.

Near Toungoo, an Indian brigade and 2 RAF base forces surrender to Imperial troops.

China: bomb bomb...

Burma: Ki-43s and 9-plane squadron of Zeros sweep Cox's Bazar and catch the AVG. 1 Zero pilot is lost for 5 kills! However recon finds some ships at Akyab and G4Ms sortie and 6 planes are lost and they attack the target ship from astern and miss. The max. attack distance was 1 hex too far. A large enemy TF with large warships is sighted in the Gulf of Bengal...

DEI: IJ bombers hit the ports of Soerabaja and Batavia and sink some small ships.

South Pacific: 20 B-17s hit Port Moresby, score 5 hits and manage to have one destroyed. They fly at 10,000 so flak scored hits as did defending Zeros, twice.

China: -

Burma: IJAAF sweeps Chittacong in force but the Allies have stood down their fighters... However over Akyab Ki-43s destroy 3 AVG Hawks. 86 have been destroyed so far - only 8 left.

The enemy task force in the Bay of Bengal moves slowly towards Ceylon.

DEI: bombers hit Soerabaja's port yet again and destroy more small ships... 3 submarines reported in port for the last 2 weeks. Trying to hit them...

A large enemy TF including battleships and CVs reported near Perth. Most probably CVL Hermes TF. They sailed over 11 submarines and none attacked...

South Pacific: Zeros swept Noumea from Luganville. 2 Zeros lost for 1 Wildcat and 2 P-40Bs. B-17s struck Port Moresby again with their bullshit gunners that outright destroyed 2 Zeros in the air without them getting even to fire, one pilot KIA... However the enemy again flew at low altitude and lost 2 B-17s to flak! And the airfield wasnt damaged. I hope the Allies will keep flying their heavies to Port Moresby 2-3 times a week for the following 2 years +.

Submarines: a very large IJN transport carrying an engineering unit to Truk is hit near Yokohama and turns back, looks like she'll make it. A small minesweeper on its way to Rangoon is destroyed by a British submarine near Singapore. Finally, IJN submarines between New Zealand and Australia find a tanker convoy and sink a VERY large tanker in full fuel load!

Erkki -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (7/7/2014 6:06:28 AM)

Heres what I have for plane R&D. We use the new aircraft data files so some planes are better than in stock(Ki-100 mainly). House rules in effect: 1) no skipping models, for example Ki-44-IIc cant become available before Ki-44-IIb, 2) Ki-61 series except Ki-61-Id has service rating lowered by 1 and 3) Ki-84a arrives 2 months later, 6/44.

Army: main problems for Army are lack of firepower, performance and armor... So pretty much everything.

fighters:
Ki-44: heavy invest, will be the main fighter from mid 1942 onwards. Lots of R&D towards the armored IIc
Ki-45: the first one is the best with the c model, will be built but not R&D'd
Ki-61: first single-engine plane to provide armor so the series is heavily R&D'd. Planning to build some early Ki-61s along K-44 and Ki-43, but later mass-build Ki-61-IIbKAI( has 4 cannons, 2 in CT, and tests have shown it to be a superb anti-bomber fighter. Basically a less maneuverable but longer-legged Ki-84 with heavier guns) and Ki-100(service rating 1, better than Ki-44-IIc with new aircraft data files).
Ki-83: some R&D but no serious investment as its costly to build
Ki-84: the obvious choice

bombers:
Ki-48: armored model will enter production in a month and it will be produced at least until Ki-49-IIa becomes available
Ki-49: trying to get the IIa it ASAP and then mass-build 120 or 150 a month
Ki-67: in this scenario all models have the torpedo so it sees some R&D

Navy: no need to R&D planes for firepower only unlike for Army, some good options in this scenario...

fighters:
CV Zero: 4x30 R&D A6M5 to 5b and M8. Intending to get M8 by April-May 1943
FB Zero: 1x30 for M7 which will see pure CV CAP and later "long range" kami use
land based zero: 4x30 for A6M3b with armor and then onwards, an absolute MUST for navy land based units
N1K series: VERY heavy invest as the 2nd model is CV capable! Also faster than before with new air data
A7M: M2 is worse than carrier N1K and arrives later as N1K is much easier to R&D... However the last model has crazy guns of 6 cannons! Some R&D there
J7W: some R&D

bombers and attack:
G3M and G4M will be built 72/month(starting factories)
P1Y: heavy invest as its the first armored bomber
B6N1: 4x30 factories, intending to build the first one to get that sweet range 8 torpedo on all CVs ASAP
D4Y: 5x30, this scenario has a new late war model with armor that is worth R&Ding imho! Better than the new armored B7A too
B7A: 4x30

recon planes: will be built as they come, no need to R&D
transports: Ki-56 and Ki-57 for army, L3Y and H8K2-L for navy, maybe later H8Kx-L and L2D
patrol: H8K already in production...
float planes: I may try the E15K when it arrives

Like your aircraft building choices. Pretty solid work and excellent goals for getting the most bang for your buck.

How are you resources and oil holding up? I found--with reduced cargo capacities--that the economy is much harder to keep going then before.

I've managed to keep resources on Honshu @ 30-ish days reserves and both fuel and supplies are going up, approaching 1 million supplies. Palembang, Miri and Brunei have been left dry. Hokkaido I'm managing to move more resources than its building but having some trouble with Sakhalin. Fusan is not enough to move all resources produced in mainland Asia so I use Shanghai as another resource port.

I did not expand naval or merchant yards at all and vehicles to only 200 and air production only modestly so far(for example Navy air factories have been expanded by only 40: some E13 and 30 A6M3!). I spare supplies wherever I can.

Larger problem than cargo capacities is the annoying tendency of CS convoys to load ships only partially... Adens seem to sail at 70% loaded mainly. [&:] So tankers sail 100% under direct orders.

China: 2 Chinese corps retreated, one near Changsha and the other far in the north for ~100 destroyed squads.

Burma: silent, but Imperial Guard's third reaches the hex where 1st Burma Division retreated to. Shock attack ordered for tomorrow! IJAAF bombers attempted to keep their heads down today so they may not be able to escape.

DEI: IJN bombers hit the northern end of Java. I'm attempting to make the Allies think there will be a landing here in the near future. Deliberate attack by the 144th Inf. Reg. at Tarakan fails for the Nth time... They've been trying to take the place for 2 months now. I guess I need to let the defenders run out of supplies.

Timor Sea: IJNAF strikes Darwin's port and destroys some small coastal minesweepers and a larger AR repair ship. No enemy fighters. :P

South Pacific:A large enemy force with warships and another with merchants arrives to Noumea. They bring more air search to the area and some IJN subs are revealed.

12 B-17s strike Port Moresby and 5 with 2 B-25s Luganville. Defending Zeros and anti-aircraft fire(mass of it, for the Japanese any way, stationed at Port Moresby because I expected it to become a bomber magnet, and it did!) manage to destroy 2 B-25s and 5 B-17s to no loss! Just a handful of runway craters that are patched quick.

Submarines: An IJN sub penetrates enemy escorts and manages to fire 6 torpedoes at CVL Hermes near Perth... But despite Hermes being a slow ship they all miss!!! As an icing on the cake, another IJN sub attacks a very large unescorted xAP on its way to Ceylon but also misses! Whats wrong with the Japanese submarines in this war?!?

China: a new Ki-21 Sentai starts operating from Canton, and there are lots of bombing sorties today. IJA force on the road to Ankang reaches the Chinese again - attack ordered for tomorrow! Bombardment near Sian goes pretty well without a Japanese loss - I seem to be consuming their supplies, as planned.

Burma: A6M3 debuts as a wing of them sweeps Akyab, but Allied fighters dont fly. IJAAF hits the withdrawing British on the Prome-Akyab road. Imperial guards attacks them but despite all the negative modifiers the defenders had and the casualties they suffered week ago, the odds are only 1:2 and they hold. :( Bad luck with the dice I think...

DEI: yesterday the Dutch finally moved their submarines out of Soerabaja's port, so I canceled the bomber raid. However I figured they would fly their fighters in hopes of catching the bombers so I flew the 3rd Ku S' Zeros instead. 9 enemy fighters shot down for 1 Zero(pilot wounded). IJN bombers also hit Darwin again but this time all the ships had left the port. I wonder why. :)

South Pacific: a small enemy task force with 2 ships appears West of Luganville. Pickets I suppose. Noumea has about 40 enemy ships...

The operation to take Efate begins.

Submarines: A Dutch submarine sinks a tiny converted ASW boat near Singapore. IJN subs attack Noumea en masse but dont achieve anything - just one attack on an escorting destroyer that fails. Near Hawaii, enemy ASW force with 4 Clemsons attack I-17 that is badly hurt and may become the first casualty of the submarine fleet. 11 system damage and 56 flotation.

Ships: CLs Tenryu and Tatsuta begin their conversion to CLAAs at Hong Kong.

SigInt: For the 2nd time theres any use of it, as Sydney's detection level is risen to 2. See the screenshots.

China: advancing IJA inflicts more serious, serious losses to the retreating Chinese on their way to Ankang. The 4-Corps Chinese force has all but lost its combat effectiveness. They now retreated across a river(shock attack when IJA crosses it) where 4 other Chinese units waited for them. I hope they are not all full strength Corps, or this IJA push may end there...

Ground combat at 83,44 (near Ankang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 35852 troops, 280 guns, 263 vehicles, Assault Value = 1269

Burma: IJAAF bombs the 1st Burma Division on the road to Akyab. RAF's Blenheim bombers show up over the battlefield, but 8 get shot down by the newly arrived 11th Sentai's Ki-43s on LRCAP.

DEI: IJN bombers hit Darwin's airfield, damaging lots of Catalinas on the ground. Waters around Palembang become infested by a mass of enemy submarines.

South Pacific: all quiet today.

Submarines:A USN sub sighted and attacked near Buna, where Marine engineers and aviation support unit are unloading.

March 8, 1942

A good day!

China: bombardment attack near Sian using only the artillery units(sparing supplies here) destroys or disables over a dozen KMT squads. At this rate the artillery will destroy a regiment's worth of troops every 2 weeks. The Chinese moved more troops here today - this is good news as I'm planning to just bomb and tie these units in this hex while 2 other armies flank.

Burma: A6M3 wing sweeps over 1st Burma Div on the Akyab road and meets the AVG: 7 Hawks are shot down for 2 A6M3s and only one pilot is lost. I think this was good performance considering the numbers were 1:1 and this Zero unit wasnt particularly experienced. AVG's Hawks have now been destroyed.

DEI: Bandjermasin invasion fleet nearing its target became the target of enemy air attacks by old T.IVa float planes. LRCAP from Balikpapan dealt away with them. Lots of enemy submarines around Palembang get chased by ASW patrols and aircraft but no success today.

PI: IJA bombards the Philippine-American forces at Manila for approx. the 30th day.

South Pacific: Kido Butai and the rest of the fleet is easily within Catalina range from Efate and Fiji... But they dont seem to get sighted!

B-17s attack Luganville but the Zero-CAP shoots down 3 without a loss. I think the range and small size of Noumea's airfield really hurt them.

Submarines: A USN sub finds and almost destroys a lone picket ship near Japan. Another USN sub attacks the transports unloading at Buna, New Guinea, but unsurprisingly its torpedoes are duds.

Lieutenant Commander Shun Hasegawa and the crew of the submarine I-160 become the heroes of the day as they intercept and successfully attack an enemy force led by a Royal Navy battleship HMS Ramillies near the Maldives Chain in Indian Ocean. 3 hits are scored, flooding, counter flooding and heavy damage reported! I-160 avoids retaliation by Ramillies' escorts... She still has 4 torpedoes left(2 in front tubes) and so she gets ordered to pursuit Ramillies towards Colombo.

Sub attack near Addu at 14,49

Japanese Ships
SS I-160

Allied Ships
BB Ramillies, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Fortune
DD Isis

SS I-160 launches 6 torpedoes at BB Ramillies
DD Isis fails to find sub, continues to search...

South Pacific on March 8:

March 9, 1942

China: a large stack of Chinese moved out of Changsha towards Nanchang today. Looks like 4 Corps. I think these were looking to attack the Japanese regiment that had pursued a single Chinese Corps and retreated it 3 or 4 times during the last month, inflicting heavy casualties. The Chinese however are late, and if they attack further they'll be meeting more units, and I'll start bombing them. Artillery attack near Sian goes well again.

Burma: Every single bomber in the area was ordered to bomb 1st Burma Division today, and finally the weather allowed all strikes to fly. 1/3 of the Imperial Guards then retreats this enemy force for the 3rd time!

Ground combat at 55,48 (near Ramree Island)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 4188 troops, 40 guns, 16 vehicles, Assault Value = 124

Defending force 3311 troops, 39 guns, 20 vehicles, Assault Value = 52

Japanese adjusted assault: 92

Allied adjusted defense: 19

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), fatigue(-), morale(-)
experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
133 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled

Allied ground losses:
936 casualties reported
Squads: 33 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 82 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 3 (3 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (3 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 3

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
Imperial Guards/A Division

Defending units:
1st Burma Division
221 Group RAF
77th Heavy AA Regiment

There isnt much left of those units.

Malaya: Tandjoepinang, the island right outside of Singapore, is invaded and falls! As I thought, this was the Allies' Catalina base in the area, and several planes are destroyed on the ground.

DEI: Bandjermasin invaded and the place will probably fall tomorrow. Denpasar invasion D minus 1.

South Pacific: KB and the invasion fleet remain hidden!! Luganville's Zeros sweep Efate and meet 18 Wildcats. The score is 5-4 but with only 2 pilots lost.

Submarines: I-160 fails to find Ramillies again - perhaps she went to Addu Atoll... Lots of submarines off Palembang still, and aerial ASW claims 1 hit on an enemy sub.

Lowpe -> RE: Where'd I put that sword again? Erkki(evil IJ) vs Iroquois(A) no Iroquois (7/16/2014 11:24:03 AM)

Lousy Allied damage control...sink the Ramillies she can't be going fast.
