sufa101loofa -> Newbie Questions (4/18/2014 7:45:50 PM)

1) Since the Hurricane IIb fighter has a maneuverability rating of 14 at above 32k feet and the A6M2 Zero has a rating of 10 at the same altitude should I assign my CAP to 33k feet? My pilots are highly trained (AIR rating over 65) and I am using the stock software - scenario 1.

It is end of February 1942 in my PBEM game.

2)I am trying to pull Oil and Resources out of Java before the Japs overrun my bases. Best places to store oil? Is there a screen where I can see all my refineries?

3)Best practice transporting fighter air groups to the front lines from WC?

Thanks in advance.
This is such a great forum

1) Honestly, whatever works for you. You could try that setting, I'd be interested in the results. To me, CAP altitude setting is largely a matter of intuition: what altitude do you think your opponent will be using? Do you think your opponent will be sweeping or bombing? Etc.

2) You can see all of your refineries if you push 'J' - I would recommend shipping the Oil to Australia, i.e. Perth, as the refinery in Melbourne seems to constantly be out of Oil. Personally, I would rather save Fuel and Supplies. Only if I had extra TK/AO capacity would I haul Oil.

3) Air Transport TFs are going to be necessary here. If you want minimal risk, divide the unit and then load them onto transports. Use AKV's if you are transporting directly to a base near the front. I don't recommend using air transport TFs to transport directly to a front line base, as you risk losing the ship with planes on board (which is why you would divide the units into thirds and then load them).

Air groups will load instantly, so if you do not want them to load any supply you can typically dock the Air Transport TF in the port, load the units, allocate the load, and click accept - it should now say "Loading complete" if you did clicked 'Do not load supplies', and you can now undock them and use the next TF. Or you can have them load supplies... Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It's a nice way to get double duty out of a convoy.

Lokasenna provided excellent advise. I was going to comment, but he stole my thunder.

If your trying to intercept you need to get your A/C near the raid Alt. Most people are creatures of habit they will use the same Alt for their raids. The way to use the Manv. rating would to sweep with the Hurricanes at 33k then the IJA/IJN A/C must come to you.

In truth, what I would like to see is the ability to LIMIT CAP to a certain max altitude and thus NOT take the bait of a sweep WAY up there at some absurd altitude when you know a follow up raid will be coming in at 20K feet BELOW the sweep... this idea that the CAP has to intercept each and every flyby no matter how untouchable or how little the threat it presents is not realistic! Oh well...
