I suggest a more aggressive approach in China.

It is quite easy to liberate the entire string of bases from Nanchang to Sinyang in the opening phase and then to drive to Nanking and Shanghai in the second phase.

In my last game Shanghai yielded 850k supply when it fell.

I play IronBabes C (secn 30) w/ extended map and stacking limits against the AI.

The AI will not exploit the game mechanism that allows attacks on airfields to destroy the entire supply source of armies in the filed the way most PBEM players do.

Hi everyone :)

I've fanaly managed to get back to the game seriously. I am currently 7 games in games, and i have a few questions to ask you before i come with the big picture.

- My Buffalos in Singapore are really packing up some kills and gaining nice experience. Is there any way i can transfer these pilots to an other squadron with better planes?
- In the PI, bot sides are invaded and the waters are getting dangerous. I'm planning to start an evacuation of Manilla, but is it worth saving the P40 in there? I'd be tempting to, but it's quite a heavy PP cost.
- I've started a convoy from Sydney to SF, but they are so slow..they barely advanced about 30 tiles in a week. Is it normal? did i forget something?

- What infos would you be interested in seeing on that first week of fighting?

Thanks! :)

BBfanboy -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (8/3/2014 4:51:00 PM)

To return pilots to the General Reserve from which they can be picked up by another squadron:
- In the squadron screen, click on the Pilots hypertext at the bottom. When the list of pilots comes up go to the bottom
of that screen and change the hypertext where it says "Transfer pilots to:" from Squadron Reserve to General Reserve.
Now just click on the buttons for "Transfer Pilot" in groups of 1, 5 or 10. If you do not want to transfer all of them, sort
them first by clicking on the Air skill to get the best pilots at the top and change the selection at the bottom from "Experience (overall)"
to "Air Skill". If you make a mistake you can get them back by going to the squadron screen and selecting "Request veteran".
It may take several days for the pilots to be available in the pilot pool, but use "Request Veteran" to get them into the squadron with
better planes. You may need to send some inexperienced pilots to the General Reserve to make room for the veterans.

Edit: Meant to add that you might be able to return the pilots to the pools by disbanding the squadron but you might lose the aircraft when you do that.

Also keep in mind that pilot pools are not universal, so you can't get the British pilots into an American squadron.

BBfanboy -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (8/3/2014 4:59:12 PM)

Re: the Philippine P-40s - I wouldn't bother with the P-40Bs, and the P-40Es I would take only if there were good pilots
and a good leader. You also have to consider where you can get them to (i.e. are drop tanks going to be available for the trip)
and whether they will be destroyed later anyway (e.g. if they get to Java and cannot go further. You also have to guess how
much success they may have before they are destroyed. It's all a judgement call that only you can make.

Re: the convoy - the progress sounds like you have 10-kt. vessels with the convoy. These are not worth the slow-down involved
for the rest of the convoy and I would cut them loose to proceed independently. They are generally short-ranged and will have
to hit a couple of fuelling stops on the way back. Your convoy may already have done some ship-to-ship refuelling that delayed its
progress.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/18/2014 7:44:46 PM)

Hello everyone!

My game is progressing slowly. I'm getting pushed back, but i guess it's normal for 42. China is a mess, i don't know what do do here XD

Anyway, this is not why i'm here. I had a technical question to ask. Thanks to BBFanboy's advices, I have set a series of short ranged transports to convoy supplies from EC to CT. He told me that offline boats were not using fuel, and therefore could be set to full speed.

However, i realized that most of my offmap ships are now out of fuel, and will take a month to reach their destination. Did i do something wrong? Or is it me who didn't understand something?

To not use fuel both the departure and arrival base must be off-map - I think I described it as "between off map bases". If you are going between an on-map location and an off-map one, fuel will be used as normal.
I also learned a day or so ago that you need enough fuel for one hex travel (40 nm) on each ship doing the trip between off-map locations or the AI will treat the TF as "out of fuel".
I now have a convoy expected to take 142 days to get to EC USA, but I am not worried because ... I did this once before when I forgot to give a ship that was at 0 fuel a little sip before sending it on its way. Somewhere along the line the AI decided that an invisible fuel source filled up the one out of fuel.
Also, travel between off-map bases causes no system damage to your ships, even if they are out of fuel.

About China - I don't have any magic solutions to suggest - just try to get as much supply there as possible and resign yourself to losing hordes of troops. Best China defence currently on view is in Obvert's AAR Felix, Ferdinand and Frupac.

PaxMondo -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/19/2014 9:08:12 AM)

What difficulty setting are you using? As this is a stock AI game, you need to be at HARD level minimum. You should go to VERY HARD at least once/month for a at least a few turns. Otherwise the AI side will starve out on supplies and it Offensives will grind to a halt.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/11/2014 9:35:58 AM)

Hello, people from various horizons :)

My campaign is going veeery slowly, as i'm still learning the ropes and all. I am now on the verge of 1942, a very big year.

Instead of doing a very long summary of what i've done, i put my save game at your disposal. Concrete thing are better than a long text :)

http://www.filedropper.com/wpae033

My game version it : Beta 1.7.11.23x10 , with Da big babe + extended Map and stack limit.

Enjoy and feel free to comment :)

China

The big piece of land somewhere in Asia. Once again, i took inspiration on Sardaukar's AAR for beginer in the general strategy, i hope he didn't have a copyright on it :) If he did, well sorry but i don't have any way to pay.

Naval :

Seriously?

Air Force

Nothing much to report in China Airpower appart from outdated planes. I mostly set fighters to 100% Escort training.

Ground Units

Now that is what i call something. The two pictures below illustrate the general strategy:

[image]http://imgur.com/CYiz4m3.png[/image]

[image]http://imgur.com/DMvANV5.png[/image]

- The line in red is the one we plan to hold off the Japs, using terrain and natural assets
- Units circled in blue are set to moove behind this line while staying in combat mode
- Units circled in purple are set to moove back in Move mode.
- Other units are left to Rest or Combat if they are directly in contact of an enemy unit.

I know units on the plain are going to get uterly obliterated, but as Sardauk precised, it's a good thing to keep the Railroad cut in these plains to denie supply to the japanese as long as possible.

I hope i get the general idea in china, even if it will be quite hard to have a unit rotation when you have most of them already in the front line.

Unless you are prepping for a PBEM game there is no reason to be so timid in China.
It is rather easy for a player to liberate most of China by the end 42 against the AI.
My current game is in June '42 and I am at the gates of Nanking.
Shanghai is the true prize in China. Last game it yielded up 850k supply when I liberated it.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/15/2014 4:58:28 PM)

I admit my knowledge of the game doesn't allowme to plan such a great scale thing :)

I'm still trying to grasp on how land fighting works

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/20/2014 8:16:10 PM)

HI BlitzX

Downloaded your savefile and started playing with it:

You conserved your forces very well

If I may offer some advice , dont use Full speed for your shipmovements , a lot of your convoys have high system damage and your fuel consumption is very high, use Mission speed instead

Use the "tin can navy" some more, it's good fun raiding in the initial stages of the Japanse quest in the Dutch indies and around new Guinea
A destroyer is less victory points than an xAK ad is a lot harder to hit for a Betty [:D]

For advice how to create "artificial reefs" and the use of the Royal Navy: google for "War in the Pacific - The Let's Play Archive"
1 turn each day for almost 4 years and good fun to read about grey hunters victories and failures

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/25/2014 6:10:57 AM)

Thanks a lot for the advice :)

I have alost a lot of ships due to stupid actions though, if you look at the list it's pretty long ^^' But i've been lucky enough to not loose a single BB during PH attack.

I am using Full speed in the DI area because it's started to get very hot here with the planes and the KB around, so i try to get my transports going as fast as possible. I have managed to pull out a full set of Indian troops out of Singapor, and i need to do a second one with the rest. Otherwise i'm using Mission speed.

As far as raiding, i've atempted twice to do it. But you may have not seen my Dutch feelt limping back home after an encounter with the KB. Maybe it was too big for the area.

I'll have a look at this website!

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/26/2014 8:19:05 AM)

I played the 1st and the 2nd of january turns. Did a nice raid with 2 old US destroyers (US Whipple and Parrot) towards Soc Trang and destroyed a regiment of the 25th division heading for Malaysia on an AMC and some AK's, with some Dutch subs around to kill the damaged ships

Your Burma position is strong , if you build up Moulmein it is quite hard for the Japansese to get to burma
My intention is to do a 'Rangoon express" , using a lot small xAK to get as much (indian) supply to Rangoon(and thus China) as possible
Protected by the AVG and all british fighters you get, In a few weeks one will have very experienced pilots and a lot of nells/betty's/oscars downed

And ofcourse being dutch I will defend the Dutch Indies with everything I got.Karel Doorman goes total war. The MLD with their Dorniers on 1000 feet on naval attack will be the whip of the jap merchant fleet

what turn date are you on now

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/26/2014 2:56:22 PM)

I'm actualy on the 2nd of January, on the verge of getting to the 3rd. I didn't really have time to play much these days.

I was intending to start the "Rangoon express" from India when i'd have my second load if Indian troops from Singapore brought back home. BUt its true i can start now since i have some spare transports; problem is that the Rangoon area is quite on the threat of JPN bombers, even if my pilots in Rangoon are getting tought (my fighters on Buffalos are real beasts! )

My raiding hability in the Dutch INd. is a bit limited since i scatered my fleet in convoys, or sent it to Colombo. the real threat can come from my Australian CA in Port Moresby.

But in general i managed to save troops because i'm against the AI, and it progresses much slower than a human.

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/29/2014 7:30:39 AM)

HI Blitzx,

On the 16th of jan now, did Some Nice raiding in the DEI , the japanese have Some rebuilding to do for their 4th and 38th division.
Also the Onderzeebootdienst (Dutchbat submarine service) is tormenting the japanese, putting a fish in akagi.
In China Canton is conquered back, now assembling forces to recapiture hongkong.

Once a while I put the ai on hard, so Its gets Its Spike back.
At the moment it has parked 1 carier force with the damaged akagi near makassar and the other carierforce near merak !

Anyway , with no carrière near rabaul, that's another graveyard for he japanese merchandiser navy which is losing 8-10 ships per turn

Planes (P40E s with droptanks) are being sent to the DEI from pearl harbour, using the palmyra-Canton island-pago pago - Suva - noumea - townsville - Darwin - koepang -Soerabaja route

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/29/2014 1:49:10 PM)

Hello!

How do you manage to retake Canton? I don't have many units in the area. Did you bring them from somewhere? Did you change the leaders?

I didn't think about bringing the P40 from PA by land. Those arriving in Brisbane may be a better idea?

I already have those saved from PI brought to PM by ship.

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/29/2014 2:46:38 PM)

The japanese moved out of Canton to the nortthwest, so I railed a strong corps from Changsa to kukong and moved them Canton.
Bij the time they "liberated" wuchow. I liberated Canton

The P40's from brisbane al already defending the airspace over Batavia against the merak CV s . (Pilots remplaced by good pilots)Their island hopping pilot brothers Will soon join them

My latest move is the reliberation of manila, the AI has moved almost al troops to bataan, so the pushes out defenders Will try to return

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (2/16/2015 3:26:02 PM)

The KB is pounding Sojerbaya by surprise, i really didn't epect them to come so early. I don't think it's the invasion yet, by they are wrecking havock in my fighters there.

I am also almsot done extracting all IND units out from Malaysia.

I was wondering, how do i do to destroy the Dutch oil reserves before the Japs arrive? Can i just do it?

I also have dozens of planes sleeping in PA and the West coast i do'nt really know where to put...

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (2/16/2015 7:28:45 PM)

How much allied fighters do you have at Soerabaja ?

You cannot destroy them before the japanes arrives otherwise the game could be rather short, what you can do is have lots of engineer WHEN they arrive, fighting will cause (more) damage to the instalations.

What do you mean with sleeping? Can't you buy them out are are they disabled ?

Any squadrons you dont have use for can best be used to train new pilots.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (2/16/2015 7:55:20 PM)

Well I have only 8 Active 75A-7 , and 12 B-339D .
The P-40 from the Philipines are on their way to Port Moresby by boat. The Buffaloes from Singapor have been evacuated to the burman border.

By sleeping i mean they are active, but i dont know where to send them. It's so overwelming XD

Haarlem -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (2/16/2015 8:20:29 PM)

That's not much, where are you using the P-40's which show up in Australia ?

I flew in a number P40's from PH (first upgrade to P40E so they can reach Palmyra)

"Planes (P40E s with droptanks) are being sent to the DEI from pearl harbour, using the palmyra-Canton island-pago pago - Suva - noumea - townsville - Darwin - koepang -Soerabaja route"

The ones on the west coast you can downgrade them and use for training or sent the unrestricted ones to Capetown (first to eastern USA)

I am on the 13th of feb 42 , at what date are you ?

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (2/16/2015 8:44:46 PM)

I'm on the 10th of January, i just recently retook the game.

I transfered the P40-E from EC to CT, tehy will arrive in 38 days. I will upgrade the P39D to P40D and send them too.

I just received the squadron of P40E in Brisbanse, i will wait for it to be fully ready before starting its transfer to DEI.

On PH, i wanted to do some island hopping, but i have no P40-E in pool atm to upgrade them.

It's quite common for the AI to abandon bases it needs to garrison in China.

Move a decent sized force adjacent to a strongly held objective and the AI will empty the base to attack the force.

You simply have another strong force two hexes away that moves in to the vacated base now that the AI force is otherwise occupied.

Like taking candy from a baby. The AI is simply too easy to defeat ion China.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/6/2019 9:43:54 PM)

Howdy all,

After a few years i've decided to come back into the game, with the same scenario as i started in this thread. I've been wanting to train up a bit before taking on once again a human oponent, and i think i'm getting a good grasp at the basic concepts.
However, I'm also pretty sure i've done some bold mistakes and stupid stuffs which would be fatal in a PBEM. You'll find below my savegame, for those interested :)
Note that i'm using the extended map.

So far, a few elements i'm pretty sure i've messed up:
- I've not yet evacuated Singapor or Java, which at this part of the war would be deadly against a semi competent player
- I'm quite lost at how to handle China or India at this point, I think they are not optimized.
- Likewise, developping the Aleutians islands and Guadalcanal that early is a mistake, i'd have been steamroled.
- I've been pretty bold with my carriers, a bit too much.
- I'm still lost with pilot training schedules and how to rotate them or how to train them. I've seen many contradictory things on this subjects.
- I've tried following the Allied set up guide for the first turns, but if it gives a pretty good overview, some moves are less optimal.

I will continue playing and report my progress here, feedback is as always welcomed :)

The save :)
