Nothing much to report this turn, the fall of Canton was expected. However i'm now realizing this opens the door for Palmyra and Christmas, which are far from protected. A serious misstep on my part. I decide to redirect a convoy with Marine troops and Artillery units to Palmyra, to provide some sort of defense while i muster more men.

Other than this, a calm turn. China is holding, Pegu is holding and reinforcements are on their way to OZ.

The last shipment of fuel is going to leave Palembang, as the area is now clearly shut tight.

My main CV force (2CV) is moving back up from Sydney to the area of PM to protect from an other incoming attack. The garrison here isn't the best, but it can hold a few days and allow for reinforcements. In this area i'm also considering retreating from Milen Bay, which i may have built up too soon.

traskott -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/9/2019 9:56:30 PM)

Some tips:

1) You have deployed some marines a bit too forward, and in the wrong place: Guadalcanal is more important than Tulagi ;).

2) Nice job keeping your transports safe, but don't be shy and try to keep all your ships doing things. All those xAKs anchored don't do anything for your cause.

3) Keep supplies flowing!! Base building demands A LOT of supply. About 50k plus garrison needs.

4) Don't overstack cargo TFs in small ports.

Overall solid work [8D]

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/10/2019 8:23:40 PM)

Before ending this turn i did a few extra things:

- To compensate for the retreating oe damaged Dutch fleet, i've ordered the British fleet to move from Colombo down to Java. 3CAs,3Cls and 5 DDs can hopefully take an other tole in the japanese' cargo fleet. Gave it a pretty good and aggressive commander.

- Started loading the Marine raiders in SF to be shipped to OZ and withdrew a few overdue air groups

- Requested one of my STF from PM to move to Tulagi, as enemy ships have been located up north. My second STF will replace it in PM.

- Brought back all my cargos from Noumea to Sydney for some loading.

It seems that my decision to move my fleet down to Tulagi was both a good and a bad idea. If you ignore the fact a single freaking DD managed to hold a full surface fleet and even damage it, it bumped into a Japanese STF (twice) surely heading north to raid PM. Damages are heavy, but luckily mostly system. As one CL was lost, this fleet is back to Sydney for repairs (or at least will try to).

Situation

As you can see above, things heat up again in the area, with fleets heading down to the barely defended Milne Bay. To gain time for my carriers which are not far away (about a day or two south), i'll bring my second STF down to Milne bay to counter an invasion, or give the Japanese STF hopefully a bloody nose.

Meanwhile, despite being outnumbered and with only half a working squadron, the P40Bs in PM are doing pretty well. We also have pretty good search coverage over the bay, so we shouldn't have any big surprise coming that way.

Nothing else really to report (pretty good sub turn though :) )

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/11/2019 9:35:28 PM)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 05, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things are definetly heating up around PM and the Solomon sea. My STF managed to catch a lone DD and damage it, before setting sail for Milne Bay. It scared away an invasion force which had started to land on the base, before setteling here for the day.
Between 400 to 600 troops have landed on Milne bay, against which my 2 ENG forces and 2/15 Punjab battalion will have to hold. 30 AV isn't THAT bad, and they managed to hold the first assault.

One more concerning news is the sighting of ships near Pago Pago and Tulagi. I'm not too worried about Tulagi, with almost 300 AV on this base with lvl 2 forts i'm confident i can hold it. I have no fleet to counter it, since my only STF in the area is busy defending the southern tip of Papua.
Speaking of said STF, i send it north in a bold move right to Buna, where a big juicy concetration of ships have been found. Even if i lose a few ships, i can wreck havock in those transports if i catch them by night. In addition, my CTF is soon in range next turn and may get a few bombs away.

My wounded STF from last turn is leaping out to Sydney, and everything seems to hold for now. Hopefully no sub on the way down.

The convoy with the 193rd Tank Bn, 2nd USMC Tank Bn, the II US Fighter Command and the 2nd Marnine AIr Wing have reached Sydney and started unloading. Once done they'll head up to Townsville for some needed air support and backup.

In China we're a bit at a stalemate. My troops hold well since the AI isn't bringing a real concentration of troops. Moulmein magicaly went back under my controle without any action, and Pegu is still holding up.

The Enterprise CTF will soon reach Darwin for refueling, and will then Sail down to Papua for support against the invasions. I hope i'll be able to keep with the defense and not be overwelmed by a swarm of ships.

One worrying thing is that i have absolutly no idea where the KB or MKB are. Last time they were spoted south of the PHI, but that was almost half a month ago.

It seems like my attack of Buna was a good bet.

So quite a good turn, we really wrecked some of those transport ships with barely a scratch. No sign of the Japanese CAs which gave my other STF a hard time, but with the carriers around i'm a bit more confident. The STF is retreating back to Townsville for rearming, while by CTF will hang around for a few days before rearming as well.

The troops landed at Milne Bay didn't attack, i'm guessing they are way understrengh now that most of the invasion force has been sent to the bottom. I will remain on the defensive for now.

On the East Coast, i am gathering the 108th inft Regiment to sent as protection on Christmas island. For lack of better thing, those will have to do. Along with a few ENG and ARTunits.

I'm getting a bit overwelmed with all those idle Cargo ships, doing my best to keep them running. Plus Cape has run out of fuel so..that may be a problem. Karashi has just been refilled though, so tankers are back in action.

In China, i'm considering counter attacking in Hong Kong; seems like most enemy units have left the city, and i have a pretty sizeable force in Kanshien (10k+ troops, 600+AV). I'll set them all to prepare for this attack, even if it doesn't happen.

In OZ, i'm in serious lack of Aviation support, as Brisbane and Sydney are overcrowded with planes from the US. I'll move some of them up to Townsville, closer from the action, but it will have to do until we get more ENG and HQ units. 3 squadrons of P40E have arrived in Sydney, a good addition to the northern defense.

Appart from this, seems like the Java assaults have died down a bit, giving my troops and ships some releif. Singapor is still out of arm, and i don't thing they'll manage to invade Burma with such a weak attack in Pegu.

HansBolter -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/12/2019 1:55:34 PM)

If you aren't comfortable running lightly escorted or even unescorted cargo TFs on out of the normal shipping lane rotes to minimize danger but still get supply distributed, you should at least be using them to move supply from the East Coast to Cape Town and Panama.

Cape Town can be used as a hub to feed both India and Australia, until the Med route opens up to India.

One of the first things I do on the first turn of the game is sort through all ports locating all xAKs that can convert to important other ship types and after setting all conversions I want, getting every last one of those ships headed back to major supply sources. The Allied merchant fleet starts extremely dispersed and does you no good hanging around waiting for routes to become safe.

The Japanese can't be everywhere at once. Sending those xAKs off in small groups to ensure you don't lose too many of them at once to any given sub and raider encounters is what you need to do if you ever want to get your logistics engine rolling. Take some risk and lose some ships, enough will get through to make a difference. Group them according to speed.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/12/2019 2:21:20 PM)

My main supply line is for now outside map between Eastern US and Cape Town. Only convoys from CT to OZ and India are in the open. The small islands south or PH are kept alive from PH.

I think i should get more smaller TF running, but i only have mostly the short range ones (6k and less)

BBfanboy -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/12/2019 4:31:33 PM)

Very nice that you got all those xAKs. That will make his troop movement harder for a while but his navy is untouched and can come down on you hard. So, sticking around with your carriers - especially after they have used their torpedoes on xAKs - is not a good idea. The Japanese use their many float planes on night naval search while they are looking for prey, so an interception by a strong CA SCTF or even Kongo BBs against your carriers is quite possible.

Your carriers should vanish for a few days to eliminate the Median Detection Level they have after revealing their location. You might as well go and replenish. Choose your port carefully - Oz is short of fuel and supply at this stage, and KB often does the "all around OZ" port tour about this time.

As for the short-ranged xAKs/xAKLs - I find the 6000 and 6500 NM ranged ones perfect for the PH-SOPAC runs. They are small enough to dock at the many level one ports, or unload amphibiously (if so loaded) at dot hexes in reasonable time. They are also expendable for not many VPs for the enemy if they get sunk.
The 4000 NM ranged ships I send off-map to Cape Town and EC USA, form them into big CS convoys by cargo capacity and feed CT all the supply. Bigger ships will haul it on map. You could also send about 10 to Abadan to haul supply to Aden where a lot of troops will come as reinforcements. This assumes you are playing a scenario where refineries generate 1 point of supply and 9 points of fuel for every refinery point.

Cape Town and Aden can also run out of fuel if you do not ship some there, so set up some of your tankers to feed them from off map sources.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 08, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not a lot to report. My CTF took an other shot at Banu and sent 4.5k troops to the bottom, which probably were aimed at Milne Bay or Tulagi.
A few troops manage to unload in Milne bay, bringing the total to 900 men. We have about 1000 against them, but with lower quality equipment. Hopefully our level 2 fort here will help.

I bring my Carriers back to Sydney for rearming and asessing the situation. I will also switch the Buffalos on the Lexington for some Wildcats freshly unloaded from the US.

I've done a full reorganization of my transports fleet, this will take a while to get in motion. Lots of ships undergoing upgrade as well.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (10/13/2019 12:07:09 PM)

Skiped a few days since nothing really happened.

We now are the 13th of February, and things start moving along.

The KB has been finaly spotted north of Rabaul, so i'm retreating my CTF. My STF had done one bombardment pass on Milen Bay to support the troops here, and retreats to Townsville.

Milne Bay is holding up nicely for now, but with the KB around i'm not sure how long that will be. I will also try sneaking in a supply/fuel delivery to Tulagi, to help in case of incoming siege.

I think the Torres Strait is now shutdown, which is a shame. I wanted to bring the ARDs from Java down to Townsville and Brisbane for enhancing repairs. They'll stop in Darwin for now.

Perth is getting swarmed by cargo from CT, so i started developping Adelaid as a secondary port, which has a bigger port capacity than Perth.

The 134th Cmbt Engr BN is moving up to Townsville, in a hope to be Amphibiuos landed on Mile Bay as Reinforcment. Hopefully they can hold.

Troops are finaly loaded in SF and heading for Christmas Island with Fuel/Supply. Quite a big force heading for here, hopefully reaching it without a scratch.

My British STF has also reached Java, and now that i know where the KB is, i have a bit more freedom to assaults all those transports around in the area. I'm just worried about Bombers, as more and more ports start getting bombarded, including Darwin.

In India, the 3 ENG units from Aden have been tasked to travel down to Calcuta, to be redispatched along the Darjeeling/Calcuta line.

In China, my troops took back Kukong, and will be on their way to Canton. Most of their forces here are held up West of the Hex, and i hope to be able to beat up the remaining garrison. Taking it back would give a good boost to my supply there, and hinder the Jap's advance.

At first i was quite pleased for catching the fleet in a straight, but in retrospective this was a terrible idea. The retribution was brutal with all those planes in the area. I've lost 3 CL , and my Britsh heavy TF is barely hanging out. I'll try to limp it back to Soerbaja, but i think i just threw away half the whole british fleet for some meager results (the rest will need to find a way back to Colombo for heavy repairs). Quite a painfull lesson here.. I really thought i"d be able to do more than this. The Nashi is reported sunk, but i wouldn't count on it since it wasn't even in the lineup. The Soryu has also been reported to have been sunk multiple times since January, along with Zuiho.

[image]https://i.imgur.com/jvyOgNv.png[/image]

[image]https://i.imgur.com/QyXtBn6.png[/image]

I've separated the Exeter and Glasgow from the rest so they won't slow down the others' escape back to port.

In addition, i was also remembered that japanese troops can get to PM via land. Lucky for me i have quite a nice set of troops there, so it should hold. I've got most of my CVs undergoing some repairs after minor damages, but the Australian shipyards are completly full , with a backlog of ships waiting to be repaired.

On a side note, i'm banging my head on the wall as i can't get the Tracker to work anymore, it always throws me an insufficent memory issue..

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/4/2019 6:51:31 PM)

I need advice from Veterans here :)

Milne bay is being invaded, and the AI keeps pumping troops in despite its somewhat low value.
Now i got a few nice troops in there, but after starting building up the base i don't know if it's a mistake to abandon it; yet, i have more troops in Townsville i can Amphib land in there.

What would be the best course of action, try to hold it, or just evacuate and leave them the base i had a hard time building up? That could open a new gate to OZ...

Date is 24th of February.

BBfanboy -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/5/2019 1:48:27 AM)

You hurt the Japanese badly with the sinking of transports and troops, so their ability to keep reinforcing should be compromised but the AI doesn't have the same restrictions that a human player does and can bring in Permanently Restricted units if it wants to.

Realistically, you have not hurt the IJN much and it has landed some heavy damage on most of your naval strength in the area. Do you really think you could reinforce Milne Bay and supply it afterwards? Stand up to air attack from Rabaul and Buna and Solomons bases Stop bombardment TFs? Provide ASW and minesweeping for MB port?

the AI does not configure its forces well the answer might be that you can get away with it, but I don't have enough info on your forces available and what the IJ might put together to offer an opinion. You know that MB will continue to be on the AI target list until it is captured or the AI script for that conquest reaches an end date. Make your own assessment whether you have the goods to stop it, and whether it is worth the cost.

Macclan5 -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (11/5/2019 3:26:32 PM)

The wise BBf has provided you the answer.

Can you hold Milne Bay ?

Ask - and answer - yourself "at what cost" ?

There is your answer. [8D]

Given my meager experience in the game, i'd sink much too ressources in it. I'm too weak to ensure a sturdy defense this early. At least i'll leave it as a buffer for PM, which is quite strong atm.

Those Aussie base forces at MB could be quite useful later on. If you can, use Catalinas to pick up a cadre from each unit so that if the rest get wiped out by the Japanese at MB you can rebuild the unit again and not lose all the experience points.

I thought that rebuilding ment having it wiped out completly? YOu mean i can rebuilt it even if i have a very small portion of the unit saved? Is it done via reinforcement?

For LCUs, if the other parts of the unit are wiped out the small fragment becomes the parent unit and starts rebuilding if you put it in a base with enough supply, have devices in the pools and turn on Replacements. You can consider whether you want to turn on upgrades at that point or, because the unit will not be battle ready for some time, leave upgrades off so other units can get the new devices.

Note that for air units, if the parent unit is destroyed the fragments do not become the parent. You can disband or withdraw them and then buy back the unit.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (12/26/2019 11:32:03 AM)

I got a few questions related mostly to logistics:

- At the moment, i'm using almost only off map lines for my supplies : EC to CT, and CT to mostly Perth , occasionaly to Colombo/Calcuta. The rest of India is powered by Karashi, and i have a few convoys doing the LA/Brisbane/Sydney road. I also have a smaller fuel line from Perth to Sydney.
However, my issue is that Perth is completly cloged with ships and any sub here would have a real festival. This also means that my supplies arrive in big blobs, with periods without any. I've started developping Albany, which has a bigger port than Perth, but i wanted to know if this is an optimal supplying way or if it could be improved?

- Is it worth it using cargo space on the off map route to compensate for the lack of Tankers? I support using tankers off map isn't a really good idea.

- Is it worth bringing some American forces in India, mostly engineerings and a combat unit?

You should not have to send fuel by ship from Perth to Sydney. It should migrate on the rail lines to where the demand is. If you are constantly short you must turn off Oz HI for a while until you can build up fuel stocks.
If Perth is clogged, simply send some of your supply convoys or tankers to Adelaide or Melbourne. Adelaide tends to attract fewer subs.

I am not sure of the game date - that should be in every report so that the reader can better assess how things are going. I will assume you are in February 1942.
I don't use cargo ships to haul fuel anywhere (except in the dedicated tanks that some xAKs have), but if you feel the need is really urgent and you have lots of cargo ships on map, you could haul fuel off-map with them. I put some shorter ranged tankers off-map to haul EC to CT and Abadan to Aden. Their range doesn't matter off-map so they gradually built up a good stock of fuel at CT and Aden for ships picking up troops at Aden and supply at CT.
You will soon get some tankers arriving at Panama and at Aden or Abadan and will be able to haul lots of fuel on-map. Check your ship arrivals queue, filtered for type TK and arranged by date of arrival.

Your question about US Forces in India indicates you have not decided a grand strategy for the game yet. Do you know which area you want to start your offensive in, in six months? You can put a few troops here and there to help India or Oz but you should also have a plan to build up your comeback LOC so you can launch operations from that area.

Keep in mind that you get few unrestricted units and few PP to buy out the temporarily restricted ones. You will never have enough in 1942 to put strong forces all over the map. Decide what you can let the Japanese have and what you need to keep. Your strategy should help with these decisions.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (12/26/2019 12:55:55 PM)

Thanks. The date is actually end of February (25th) .

I feel kind of stupid right now, i never noticed you could send fuel from EC to Aden before the opening of the Mediteranean, quite an oversight.

As for the Grang strategy, you're right, i'm not exactly sure what i'd be doing in 43. For all I know the AI is focusing on the Java area at the moment, and i've been busy shiping many of my base/ENG/Marine forces from US to Australia, without really know in advance where i'd put them. I just moved them forward "just in case". QUite a stupid move i think. Of course i moved some troops to key islands like Pago pago, Noumea or Christmas (also building up Adak up north as a SUb base), but other than this i'm more in the idea of "Get everything down fast".

I think i have a hard time figuring out a grand strategy because of the AI relative slow pace, which is quite stupid because this should gives me more time to think about the future.

I have never seen the stock AI go after all of Australia or all of India, I have seen it frequently go for North Oz and occasionally NE Oz or Perth. Mostly it raids with a trip by KB around the island in March or so (if it already has PM). In the IO theater it will sometimes go for Ceylon/Diego Garcia or Calcutta and raid up the west coast of India. Until you get enough supply to India to start filling out Indian units and get their morale and experience higher, it is pretty hard to stop the AI early on. For that reason I do not put good units on Ceylon where they can be trapped and wiped out, until late 1942.

When you are not sure what you want to do it is OK to push forward units that are almost completely filled out and are well led. Again, prefer to put them in places you are likely to be able to defend rather than on small islands that can be traps if KB comes with an invasion armada. So good US, Brit and Aussie divisions go to continental land masses for the most part, until you get control of air and sea to use them in invasions. Since it takes three months to prep for a new target from scratch, you need to think at least that far ahead.

BTW, on my map you cannot ship fuel from EC USA to Aden until the Med opens in 1943. Note the dotted line in the last part of the off-map pipeline path. What I suggested was shipping fuel from Abadan to Aden. If you are using the stock map the route is entirely off-map and direct. With the extended map you would have to briefly bring your fuel convoy down to IO and then order it onward to Aden. Do NOT give orders to go directly between two off-map places that do not have a clear off-map path between them - the routing routine might decide to send them across the entire Pacific Ocean to get there rather than going quickly on map and then off-map again.

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/1/2020 9:20:03 PM)

Greetings tacticians

I've taken that time of quarantine to advance my game a bit further, now standing on the 1st of April.
At this stage i would really love if someone could have a look and tell me if i have make some fundamental mistakes, something so horrible that you
can't possibly recover from the mere fact you've seen it. Alteratively, something that against a player would have been fatal :)
My savegame is below.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1twMluc9vsGmNmh-JF7sAxTMmRD4LCNWq

For some context, here are a few elements:
- Singapore and PI felt the same day about a week prior, hence why i herded some subs over there.
- I was caught abit off guard by the invasion of Java, and still wait for a small opening to try and run off the remaining ships.
- I'm ot sure if betting on Luga so early was a great idea.
- I've fenced off 3 invasions of PM so far, yet they were meager ones.
- I don't really thrust the reports stating that the two BB have been sunk by mines in Manilla. THe CV and CVL however are done for.

I also have some questions :
- Is it more efficnet to have DDs as ASW escort for a convoy, or directly in the fleet? I've seen both and wonder which one is better.
- I think i need a few tips on how to handle the DDs in TFs (which ones to use for what)
- Is it a good idea to get my CV planes to land (when they get to their refitting phase) and use them against shipping for exp gain, or are they too precious
for thsi at this point?
- I think my situation in China isn't too bad, but despite some high moral and good numbers, i sometimes get crushed when attacking inferior forces.
How long does it take for Chinese units to be somewhat okay?

Any other advices and feedback are also welcome :) I quite enjoy the path it takes for now, as i'm not really sure where all the troops freed from SING and Manilla will go.

traskott -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/2/2020 12:25:54 PM)

Done. I will try to answer your doubts asuming it's a practice to play a PBEM next.

- Yes. "all forwad ahead syndrome here!" [:)]. Don't worry, always happens.
- You are improving too many things at the same time. That consumes supply at a rate you can't afford yet. Always improve first one thing ( usually forts ), then port or AF, never the three at time, very inefficient. And if base is lost to a counterattack, you are giving free levels to the japanese.
- Check those convoys at Cape Town and Perth, remember transit between off maps bases don't spend fuel, but off map to on map YES. Your xAks at Perth and those near Brisbane looks like a Martini. Which leads me to:
- Logistics: Your SLOC doesn't look like secure. You are at Guadalcanal with Noumea ungarrisoned. Don't have enought supply or fuel to mantain a prolongued trust at Solomon, or a heavy fight. Against AI you will be fine, against a human player, you are beggin for a [sm=00000028.gif] [sm=00000028.gif].
You have deployed CVs at OZ. Wrong movement. They will suck all the fuel and soon they will have to flee and you wont have fuel to support normal operations. There was a good reason those carriers didn't were deployed at Sidney in the war and the game simulate this very well. You need to create supply hubs where put tons of supply AND fuel, between USA and OZ, one step on a time. Christmas Islands-Pago Pago-Suva-Espiritu Santo-Noumea. All of those bases should be garrisoned with at least a RCT, Suva and Noumea with a division, if possible, and with convoys of fuel and supply to create stagging points to mount a counterattack AND to refuel convoys to Australia and OZ.

On the other side of the map, put several convoys with long range TKs from Abadan to CapeTown. You need to keep a medium level of 250k/300k to refuel the ships in the route CapeTown-Perth, and more fuel if you want to ship it to OZ.

- DDs as escorts: You will be short of them in 1942, so don't use them in convoy escort if possible. However, to protect the convoy, best use is with them embebded.
- DDs as part of T.F. : Check every type of DD: Usually british DD excel at ASW warfare, french at surface combat and the american at the end are truly beast. Use the ones with best endurance and ASW to protect your carriers, and always upgrade them.
- Not bad idea use the CV planes if you can see a target of oportunity, but check the pools, in 1942 allieds are shot of replacments.
- Your situation in China is good because you are fighting IA. ;) . Against human hastly retreat is in order. Your troops are very inferior to the japanese, thats why you lose against inferior forces. You need moral99, supply and 3:1 ratio to make progress. That's very inusual on this theatre, so... You must wait (against human) till 1943 squads and enough supply to make some progress... if you are still alive [:'(]

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/2/2020 2:16:24 PM)

Thanks for the first feedback :)

What do you mean by transports looking like a MArtini? I'm aware this is a metaphore, but the meaning is a bit obscure :p
As for the speed of the convoys, i'm aware of the off map trick. I have forgotten some which are in process of doing the CT/EUS route, and forgot to remove the Full speed from some in map, my mistake.

I know my Guadalcanal thrust was a mistake and a player would have definetly punished me for it. But it was really tempting :) I shall try and consolidate the other islands in SOPAC, that will surely releive the fuel strain on OZ and CT, which always runs out of fuel. I'll also try to get some convoys from Abadan to CT, but Abadan also runs out of fuel quite often so far. This also answers one question i didnd't ask, which is how to support small protection forces at those key points, but if you create fuel dumps that shall be easier. However not sure if convoys to OZ need to refuel there, they seem to have a pretty good range as long as one or two ships have enough fuel.

I had planned to bring back the CVs from OZ back north, i was just waiting for their upgrade to be completed. April is going to be tough will all those retrofits ongoing.

In other note, anything you'd say is good or more or less well done?

RangerJoe -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/2/2020 3:14:48 PM)

Actually, bring fuel to Capetown from the East Coast. The UK also gets some supplies and fuel that can be moved. The Abadan fuel is best moved to Karachi with maybe some to Aden. It will go to where it is needed. But the SW Indian ports can get the fuel which then can be moved to Ceylon. The fuel to Capetown can then go to Australia. Since you won't have enough escorts but will have plenty of supply and fuel to move from the US, simply move it to Capetown and store it there. Once you get enough escorts and/or the situation stabilizes, then go ahead and move it out. But it is not a problem to store 5 million supply at Capetown for later.

traskott -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/2/2020 4:41:56 PM)

Martini Dry: No fuel.

Overall I think it's a great planning: Strategic ideas, logistical, etc... You only need some human oponent and u will be fine...

BlitzimX -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/3/2020 9:35:23 PM)

All right then, new direction i guess :)

I'll take the oportunity of the April upgrade to redistribute my tropps and upgrade other key areas like Va'vu. I will also dispatch some minor forces (like support and ASW) to those key islands. I'll make more use of the Abadan fuel reserves to feed CT, the convoys from EA are not fast enough.
I think i will also get the British CVs in the SOPAC area, they don't do much in the IO.

I'll try to poke the AI a bit when my cariers will be refit, since the KB is around Java atm.

However something bothers me a bit: what's the main advantage of running the CVs from refuel points or islands, instead of OZ? Is it because the refueling trains are shorter? Also if you want to use refueling ships, do you just park them in the middle of the ocean?

RangerJoe -> RE: Balade of the Newbie: The grand Campaign (Allies vs IJ AI) (5/3/2020 10:12:07 PM)

If you park your AOs in the ocean and the enemy finds out, you may find submarines converging on them - after any surface combat task forces swing by. The AOs are best set to follow when you are strong enough, otherwise keep them at a secure base with CAP, naval search, ASW in the area, and even a small minefield. Put ships like the AE, AKE, AD, and even the AR with them.

From LA, the longest-range US tankers can make OZ but not back, so they must take fuel from Oz or PH to get back (set Minimal Refuel on the TF screen). The big problem is that the Japanese player will know you need to bring fuel to Oz so subs will stake out the major ports and the Bass Strait near Melbourne. And even when you play the computer, the KB will sometimes come on a loop around Oz, sinking all the shipping it can find. The big tankers can make Suva or even Noumea and be a bit safer. Pago-Pago is also usually a fuel depot.

At smaller islands, you can disband a tanker in port and it will refuel ships that come there as if it was an AO instead of a TK. It just can't do it at sea. You must make a judgement call at bases the enemy might raid on the size of tanker you want to risk or whether to put one there at all. You can offload fuel at a small base too, but at a rate of a few hundred tons a day the tanker will be there a long time and the enemy may get intel on it being there...
