But not all goes according to plan.

Sorry, really not helping you more! [;)]

And I don't agree with your point of view concerning the Lufwaffe. I will post a full screen soon. Fighters are +++, Fighter bombers ++ and bombers are low but I just want to avoid a russian air supériority.

It's Russian propaganda. [;)]

My fighters/fighter bombers have no chance against your fighters/fighter bombers. The only advantage they have is numbers. But I have a real fighter shortage for many many turns now. I have 24 regiments with obsolete I-16 sitting in reserve. The AI recognized the fighter shortage and downgraded many regiments. They are sitting in reserve and are training. Same with LAGG3. There are just not enough aircraft in the pool to upgrade these regiments.

Oshawott -> T112 - North (8/21/2014 1:51:21 AM)

T112 - North

Bridgehead is widened. He moved a lot of reinforcements from the landbridge into this sector.

Oshawott -> T112 - Center (8/21/2014 1:57:03 AM)

T112 - Center

He is still surprisingly strong in this sector but I have five of my best armies plus artillery and tank support at the landbridge. I am starting to find little weak spots in the front which I can destroy thanks to my tanks and cavalry.

Oshawott -> T112 - Kiev (8/21/2014 1:58:22 AM)

T112 - Kiev

Steady progress. It will soon be clear what my goals are in this area.

Oshawott -> T112 - South (8/21/2014 2:00:38 AM)

T112 - South

I attack a stack with Totenkopf and Das Reich. I reduce the forts from 3 to 1 and the stack has still a CV of 82. [:D] Good news is that I only have to face a level 2 fort next time.

Oshawott -> T112 - OOB (8/21/2014 2:02:09 AM)

T112 - OOB

Steady decline. Too bad that mud is coming.

Oshawott -> RE: T112 - OOB (8/21/2014 5:33:32 PM)

Brief intermission until end of August while Stef is on vacation. Meanwhile started a new game as Axis vs. Griefhead so that I don't get bored.

Ketza -> RE: T112 - OOB (8/21/2014 10:00:49 PM)

I almost grabbed that game. GL :)

Oshawott -> T113 - North (8/30/2014 4:07:23 AM)

T113 - North

Game is still on hiatus but I have some time so I post another turn.

Steady progress in the north but he puts lots of reinforcements into this sector.

Oshawott -> T113 - Center (8/30/2014 4:08:14 AM)

T113 - Center

The reinforcements for the north have to come from somewhere and the center is now pretty weak.

Oshawott -> RE: T113 - Center (8/30/2014 4:11:18 AM)

T113 - Center

It's getting more and more interesting here. The Axis forces are very thin here. I am over both rivers now and have clear terrain ahead of me.

Oshawott -> T113 - South (8/30/2014 4:13:34 AM)

T113 - South

A massive counter-blow in the south. Almost 1000 German tanks! I immediately counterattack some of those tanks.

Oshawott -> T113 - Production (8/30/2014 4:19:50 AM)

T113 - Production

I haven't posted production numbers in a while. Because I don't build many new units anymore and mostly used divisions to form corps the manpower pool is now above 3 million. Likewise I don't have to worry about armament points. My goal is to keep the Russian army close to 9 million. Trucks are no longer a problem. I have reached the break-even point.

Oshawott -> T114 - Center (9/2/2014 11:36:34 AM)

T114 - Center

Some Axis troops are now starting to route when an overstacked condition occurs.

Oshawott -> T114 - North (9/2/2014 11:38:08 AM)

T114 - North

A massive defeat in the north.

Oshawott -> T114 - Kiev (9/2/2014 11:42:35 AM)

T114 - Kiev

The main goal in the Kiev sector is not Kiev itself. I am rather aiming for the railway junction of Ovruch. I need to clear the rail lines in that area. Mud is coming and I need good supply lines. This will also severely restrict supply in the Pripyat marshes. The partisans have pretty much destroyed the entire rail network in this area.

Flaviusx -> RE: T114 - OOB (9/2/2014 3:40:31 PM)

You are in some danger of actually falling behind schedule in the south. Stef has really done a good job here defending. It's come at the expense of the north for him, but I think he made the right choice here.

Oshawott -> RE: T114 - OOB (9/2/2014 3:47:05 PM)

I think so too. Those elite forces in the south are blocking my approach towards Romania and I had to shift my troops further north. He is really stretched though and constantly has to divert his mobile forces to new hot spots.

Oshawott -> T115 - North (9/3/2014 2:29:25 AM)

T115 - North

Nice tank battle in this sector.

Oshawott -> T115 - Center (9/3/2014 2:30:09 AM)

T115 - Center

The center is now much weaker and I am able to attack across the line.

Oshawott -> T115 - Kiev (9/3/2014 2:31:30 AM)

T115 - Kiev

I continue to clear the rail lines.

Oshawott -> T115 - South (9/3/2014 2:34:30 AM)

T115 - South

3 Romanian divisions call it quits. They were in an overstacked condition before combat and that was obviously too much. Does anyone know what triggers a surrender like this? Is it a morale threshold?

HITMAN202 -> RE: T115 - South (9/3/2014 3:18:26 PM)

This has been an enjoyable AAR to follow. But the late '43 (post Kursk)- '44 eastern front conflict was a very different animal, so to speak. I've just read about the Cherkassy pocket and personal accounts of the '44 battle front and 1) the Soviets oftentimes spent weeks waiting for supply buildups, 2) the "political (NKVD)" officers had to coerce both soldiers and officers alike to fight (they acted like union workers), and 3) mass attacks were rare.

Battles across a 10 mile front consisting of 400,000 Soviet infantry, 500 AFV's and 10,000 art's were practically never seen. There was only one Kursk. Only so many men and tanks can be organized and directed to assault a area (even over a 7 day span).

At the same time the Germans were so depleted, units (even in '43) at 20-30 % strength, what we see in this AAR is pure fantasy.

Don't misunderstand me, WITE is a great game, but not a recreation. It would be impossible to reproduce the weirdness of the '43-'44 Russo-German conflict.

Oshawott -> RE: T115 - South (9/3/2014 3:59:18 PM)

The game does a very good job modeling the 41 campaign despite most Axis players (including myself) ignoring the historical setup. Everything past 42 is a real problem in my opinion. There are too many variables and the logistic system is too simplistic.

Nevertheless, I will try to play both of my current games until the end. Despite the shortcomings I very much enjoy what the game has to offer.

M60A3TTS -> RE: T115 - South (9/3/2014 5:36:43 PM)

Part of the problem is that casualties are so one sided in failed attacks that I think there is a focus on making sure an attack succeeds. At the same time the Soviet player is dissuaded from making chancy attacks against so many fortified positions that might boost Axis morale and eat troops. Clearly that isn't what happened historically, the Soviets would make large numbers of attacks which over time resulted in major attrition on both sides. That was after all the winning formula. The result of not conducting as many attacks in game is you get these bloated OOBs on both sides and the overloaded troop counts.

HITMAN202 -> RE: T115 - South (9/3/2014 8:24:07 PM)

I agree with both of your views and in spite of my inactivity, immensely enjoy the game. To suggest any further changes in WITE "rules" would add more opinions to the previous thousands; most which are thoughtful.

Small scenarios could more accurately depict each phase of the war.

M60, I think the best AAR simulating what really happened '43- '44 was when, as the Soviets, you were almost broken in a massive AGC slugfest, only to survive and then run roughshod to Berlin (or would had the game continued.) Who was your Axis victim ???
