rdw5150 -> Newbie to game (5/15/2014 12:22:29 AM)

Hi!

I picked this up from someone who decided it was not for them. i have not played any of these computer games before (been playing board wargames for years) and defiantly jumped into the deep end of the pool[:D]

Any advise for and overwhelmed newbie?

Thanks!

Peace

Roger

Welcome, This is a GREAT game. To start, review the manual that comes with the game. It will give you the basics. Then look through this forum. In perticular the threads for new players. There is a lot to read and absorb. don't expect to become an expert over night. With this game, 5 years from now you will still be learning some new trick or finding some new short cut or whatever. Someone will probably post some links here for you. look at them. Also start with the small scenarios. Enjoy. GP

Oh, if your married, ask your wife to check on you from time to time.[:D][:D][:D]

Welcome RDW 5150!
There is indeed a lot to this game, but you can start playing against the AI (computer) with only rudimentary knowledge and
get a feel for how to manage your ships, aircraft and pixeltruppen. Against the AI you get to re-do a turn in which you made a
mistake because you are not yet familiar with all the things you need to do. Just re-load the last save and change whatever boo-boo you made.

A lot of this game is logistics - getting stuff where you need it before you need it. So you need to plan against the calendar and have a rough
idea of where you want your forces to be by what date. Working back from there you can start sending supply, fuel, combat and support units toward
the target, usually to a staging base only a few days' steaming from the target. It sounds boring, but when the enemy is trying to prevent your
logistics efforts, you feel real satisfaction when you manage to get the goods/troops where you want them.

Don't forget to get troops planning 80+ days before any amphibious assault on an enemy base. Landing without preparation is an invitation
for disaster.

You don't need to write an After Action Report to get help from forum members, but if you do they will make suggestions beyond the questions you ask.
For a specific "how to" issue, use the search function to seek the answer in The War Room first. If that doesn't answer it, start a new thread in The
War Room and ask away.

The AAR forum can be pretty confusing until you play at least one small scenario to learn some of the terminology used by the experienced players.
Once you do get into AARs you can learn a wealth of stuff, including strategies and ways to tweak unit performance.

Good luck![:)]

And as has been said, start of with the small scenarios and just get a feel for it. Coral Sea is about the easiest, well balanced and gives you some naval air experience (which is the backbone of the game). Good luck and welcome aboard.

welcome, Roger.

I highly recommend the 'latest beta', available in post #1 in the Tech Support forum as a stickied thread named "Patch 07 - Unofficial Public Beta". This beta is usually almost always stable, if not, michaelm will debug & re-release it in a matter of days.

It includes a modified '.exe' file, & installs to a separate 'beta2' dir with its own shortcut. It includes many cumulative fixes & interface improvements, listed in post #2. Installing the beta will not mung w/ your original install from disc.

Once you get into modified scenarios, you will need to pay attention to their filenames, to avoid overwriting a stock scenario file in the scenarios dir.

Welcome aboard! You already got great feedback on this thread, my addition is: try not to be overwhelmed with the level of detail. Yes there is a lot to this game, but that's what make it so rich and enjoyable.

Plus, as said before, if you have a question this forum is a great group to help you out.

Enjoy
