Hello,

I am playing a campaign, German side, and when I upgrade to regiment and try to progress, it gives me an error code due to not being able to find a Russian regiment to start the battle. It then kicks me back out to beginning and I have to go through this 5 or 6 times before it finally lets me progress. Is there a fix? I am playing a campaign, german side.

berto -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/4/2014 11:01:55 PM)

No, no fix. See more discussion about this issue here.

Ultimately, when there is a fix (in the anticipated data "mega patch" due out in a couple of years, more or less), it will be a data fix. Until then, you just have try try again until you succeed, as apparently you did.

Crossroads -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/5/2014 3:26:00 PM)

Nick, alternatively you could modify the Russian campaign00.oob (if that's the only culprit giving the game engine hard time finding a proper regiment lever organization data) so that it only contains the units you want to campaign with/against, and install the modified oob files as a user mod.

I am putting together a little guideline as how to do this. I thought I'd done it already but, alas, real life has intervened. I hope to continue with the guideline on tomorrow or monday.

Yes, it is a bit of extra work, but on the bright side of things I particularly enjoy tweaking the units so that even when randomly generated they are as close to real oobs as possible [:)]

Crossroads,

is it about cutting and pasting into a particular file? Is there a link I can copy and paste into a particular folder? thank.s

Alternatively, you can look in your MANUALS folder for the following PDF:

If a unit size is not available for a specific side or time period could you just copy the unit oob that is closest to it and rename/redesignate it so the game can actually find a similair size force?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 4:16:57 PM)

Yes, you can.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 4:50:52 PM)

Is it hard to do?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 4:56:40 PM)

Not hard at all, just time consuming.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 5:04:10 PM)

I only played East Front so I would probably start there. Can you just change a single entry in a oob and then save as? Is the issue just limited to Regiment/Brigades or does it effect other choices?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 5:08:23 PM)

It affects other choices as well.

You have to copy a particular Brigade from the brigade##.oob to the regiment##.oob and renumber that organization using the proper coding with a unique ID, also ensuring that the relevent higher organizations are recognizing that new Regiment OOB are changed.

You can find a document I have written for Modern Wars which explains in pretty good detail on how to mod the OOB files.

Magic Document

It is in Draft mode, so if you something that doesn't make sense, let me know.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 5:14:01 PM)

So to make it work perfectly you need to consider higher levels the formation may be used in. What if I just wanted keep all the higher formations the same but just create Soviet Regiments so I wouldn't need to keep trying to get the game to pick the right unit opponent, could I just make them to be used against a German regiment in a Campaign?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 5:18:56 PM)

It still needs to be recognized in the Campaign and Division OOBs. So yes, all of the organization OOBs need to be modified.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 5:45:29 PM)

Thanks

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 6:05:42 PM)

Could I just modify one Inf and one Arm division for each year to give them regiments and have it work?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 10:17:32 PM)

You have to modify the divisions in the Campaign OOB

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 10:22:28 PM)

I got that part but could I just modify say one Russian infantry division and one armour division in 1942 and then choose to play a German regiment in1942 or do I have to modify every Soviet division available in 1942?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/6/2014 11:08:01 PM)

Just the divisions that the campaign.oob file accesses, that's all.

scottintacoma -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 12:09:57 AM)

The campaign OOBs are at the bottom of the file.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 12:27:35 AM)

Cool. I may give it a try.

scottintacoma -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 2:40:58 AM)

James,

2 things, work on a copy of the file, and make sure you save the original.

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 12:05:22 PM)

Will do.

Crossroads -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 12:15:14 PM)

You might actually want to add your modified oob files as a user mod, with the JSGME mod management tool that is accompanied in the installation. The use of tool is quite simple, put the folder consisting of your modified files under the MODS folder, the name of that folder being the name of your mod. Then, under that folder, mimic the target locations, with the files.

For an example: \MODS\JW EF OOB Mod\East Front\*.*

Then, you can easily install/uninstall your files with JSGME.

Jason,

As a test, if I don't want to 'create' any new units but just re-designate a brigade as a regiment can I just changed the letter G to an R, as outlined in your document, and keep all the other unit ID's the same in the division? What I want to just try to do is rename a single brigade in a Russian division to a regiment so that it 'chooses' that when I want to play with a German regiment.

Also if I do this and want to test it, how do I use the GME to use the new OOB? I am somewhat familiar with using it for Panzer Corps mods. Would I just put the new Russian OOB in the mods folder or do I need to put all the other nations OOB in the same mods folder?

Jason Petho -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 8:23:55 PM)

You'll have to change the G and change the Regiment number so it is unique, everything in the new regiment shouldn't have to change. You will have to identify that regiment in the division file as well.

(Damn iPhone)

James Ward -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 8:34:26 PM)

So if I find everywhere that particular unit I am changing shows up and give it the same new unique ID it may work?

In you paper you show a range for unique unit numbering. Is it safe to assume that none of the units supplied with the game use any of those numbers?

Warhorse -> RE: Problem with battle generator while on campaign (7/7/2014 8:47:05 PM)

James, when working on the custom files, NEVER work on them in the main game folder while the mod is engaged!! Work on them in the folder you made, otherwise, when you uninstall the mod after all your hard work, they are gone!!

Keep in mind, that is for Middle East, so the document is all based on a clean slate.

East Front, etc, is far from a clean slate, so you will have to CTRL+F until you find a clean number to use.

Ok.

What does ctrl F do, go to a list or to the last number used?
