..and in the third. A Soviet bomber caught in the frontline is also disorganised.

The attack on Athens however was more in keeping with the Stukas reputation...

I've seen much worse mistakes that that. [:)]

Unfortunately with that successful ground strike the situation in Greece now looks kind of bad. [:(]

Edit: No worries though. Allies already won and the Axis will soon find out. Greece matter little in that regard.

There will be 5 attacks this impulse, against:

- Athens
- Cutatea Alba
- two hexes in the Ukraine south and west of Kiev
- the forest hex in southeast Latvia

The Regia Marina add shore bombardment factors sufficient to make the attack 7:1 in Athens.

To bring the odds up in Latvia the Germans would need almost their entire air force. They decline to intervene.

And so to the first attack - Athens.

Its a 7:1 +1 on the Assault table.....

...how weird is that? Another 6. The Greek capital falls - there'll be images of Dorniers over the Acropolis next....

Similar question for Italy. What do the Italians try and defend? Assume Sardinia? Albania? Sicily? Taranto? Rome? Naples? and at least a couple of Corps in the north?

This is a defence for Italy that peskpesk and I made for the Italian AI thread. The green squares are where Italian corps sized go and the dotted redline are where there is a weaknesses in the defence. The main idea with this defence is to give a +1 for ZOC to the notional defender.

We made three variants using 7 to 12 corps. More is recommended when a serious invasion invasion is imminent.

I'm really good at this game...[8|]

The Greek Navy - including its precious convoy points is missed by the Italian Fleet. I put some of the units in Cyprus before I remember that Malta is available.... good grief.

Next its the Romanians and there assault on the port of Cutatea-Alba on the Black Sea. Naturally the Soviets choose the Assault table for this 3:1 no modifiers attack....

...4. That's quite expensive. The Soviet Garrison is destroyed but the Romanians (echoing history) are paying an expensive price for their attachment to Adolf Hitler. They lose the Bucharest Militia and 1st infantry Corps.

However, there is much rejoicing in the streets of Bucharest tonight - Bessarabia is once more part of Romania!

Next we move to the hex west of Kiev. This is a 5:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table (which Fractional odds increase to 6:1)...

...its another 4. The Kiev Militia is destroyed for no loss or disorganisation.

Meanwhile, to the southeast, a 3:1 no modifier attack on the Blitz table takes place. This is really vital as success here could blow the Southern Front wide open...

...well the Germans have thrown very few high numbers in land attacks, but here is one - its a 10. The Soviets lose a unit and the survivor is Shattered - I convert to retreat.

And so to the last attack of the impulse. Its a 3:1+1 on the Blitz table....

..its a 6(7). The Soviets lose an Infantry Army and have to retreat with the 3rd Mechanised Army. The Germans suffer no losses but are all disorganised.

The Soviets lose a bomber they can ill-afford to lose too...

The Royal Navy order the Mediterranean Fleet to sea. They also request RAF presence in the Eastern Mediterranean as they seek to avenge to loss of Greece. Unfortunately I miscalculate and can only get into the 2-box whereas my land based air are in the three box.

From Gibraltar and Malta sail two further fleets into the Italian Coast

The CW request a Naval Air battle but the AA fire is so strong that none of the units get through.

Campioni sees his chance and withdraws. They withdraw through the Italian Coast and, unsurprisingly, the small RN fleet their declines to intercept.

The Italian Fleet make it back to La Spezia to a heroes welcome. They have played a key part in the conquest of Greece.

When the Soviets pulled back last time they were able to maintain a cohesive - mostly two units strong - line. This time - in both north and south - they can do no such thing - not even close.

There is better news for the Allies in China, where the Communists have been steadily building and have now got the Japanese on the run. They attempt a 2:1 no modifiers attack on the Assault table that, if successful will place the three remaining units in the Kaifeng area out of supply. Mao goes for HQ Support - but again, fails spectacularly - however the Fractional Odds take the attack to 3:1......

...its a 5. one unit is lost each and the attackers are disorganised, but the Japanese are in big trouble in the north.

There will be action in the Italian Coast. Both sides find each other and there will be a battle - but will the Italians choose Naval Air or Submarines?

Because of the presence of the Fulmar and Nimrod, the Italians go for a submarine attack using five units they have in the area.

The CW are also asked and want an air battle. The air units have priority and we go to a naval air battle. This is skewed in the CW favour - although as we know, all that is needed with an air battle is one lucky through and things change very quickly....

Round 1 (Allies to throw first):

15 - DXPX the Luftwaffe lose a precious Condor (pilot is killed) (I assume the sea does not count as friendly territory).
12 - AC - Effectively no effect

The Germans cannot risk another Condor being lost and the Axis abort.

Eagle and Implacable reclaim their aircraft.

Both sides stick around....

Both searches were successful

Axis 4
Allies 1

To the Germans consternation its another Naval Air battle. Once again the Allies roll first:

Round 1

14 - AA the Condor is aborted
14 - No Effect

The Italian flying boat is now the front aircraft, making the odds even more in the Fleet Air Arm's favour. They have no choice but to abort

The Italians - buoyed by their role in the Battle for Athens - are keen to stick around. They decide to give it one more go.

Axis 3
Allies 5

The Regia Marina find the Royal Navy - and specifically the two cruisers on picket duty (they untick the Section 1 box to get rid of the pesky RN carriers).

The results though are really disappointing. Both British cruisers are aborted thanks to some ridiculously high throws.

We are the Enterprise. The perfect naval vessel. Resistance is futile.
