Two ground strikes this impulse:

1. Against a stack of 6 units in Pskov
2. Against forces in Minsk.

Only against Pskov can the Soviets put up a fighter defence, and on the basis that there are two fighters that are being attacked anyway, the Soviets put up a defence.

The Germans have a 7.5:6.2 advantage, but the Soviets just need to abort or shoot down the lone bomber. Allies to throw first:

Round 1

12 - DC.... well that didn't work. The Stuka is cleared through.
11 - DC. Effectively no effect.

Only fighters left so the air battle ends. The only good news is that the Soviet fighters get to move away from the frontline...

Of the three units left in the hex, the Stuka disorganises two..

The Germans utilise all three rail moves and the Italians use their one, railing Kesselring to Greece which frees up Rommel to move to the Eastern Front. Meanwhile the 5th SS Mountain Corps and Graziani have both been railed to La Spezia for future use in Sardinia.

In Southern Russia the lack of Luftwaffe aircraft (together with the Soviets holding a line behind the Dnieper) is really telling. All the Germans can do this impulse is push units up the the west bank of the river. There will be no attacks in the south this impulse...

In the north it is a different story; four attacks are announced:

1. Minsk
2. Southwest of Pskov
3. Two in Latvia

In China there will be one attack against a Communist Army in Soochow as the Japanese desperately try and regain a grip on the Chinese front....

Only in one of the Latvian battles can aircraft make a difference. However the Luftwaffe are ordered to stand down. The intention is to cut off the hex concerned with an earlier attack and thus make the attack automatic anyway...

The Soviets could bring in a sexy Pe-2 Tank Buster in defence of Minsk, but it would be out-gunned by a Bf-109. The Soviets decide to hold fire, and pray it was the right decision.

First things first and its the desperate attack against the Communist 2nd Infantry Army in Soochow. The odds are 2:1 no modifiers on the Assault table....

...its a 6. One unit lost each. Not great but at least this annoying unit is removed from behind the Japanese lines.

Back to the Soviet Union. First its the attack on Minsk. The odds are 3:1 +1 on the Assault table....

...Yet another 6(7).... The Germans lose a weak 4-4 Corps and are disorganised. The Soviets lose a Garrison and a Mechanised Division but, vitally, keep hold of the city. That will hold the Germans up.

The next attack is that against the 51st Infantry Army. This is a 4:1 but with no modifiers on the Blitz table. It is a key attack as success here will put the disorganised 3rd Mechanised Army out of supply....

...awwww that was close.. a 3 is thrown. This gets rid of the Soviet unit but at the cost of disorganisation. The German turn is drawing to a close one senses....

As planned, the result of the previous attack makes the next attack automatic. And so to the last attack - that against the 9th Guard Infantry east of Riga. The attack is a 3:1 +1 on the Blitz table....

...its an 8(9). The Soviet unit is destroyed for no loss.

Only two air rebases left. The Luftwaffe send a bomber to the Ukraine and stage one of their two fighters in the region closer to the front.

The Allied impulses continue to be much ado about nothing. They should have passed with all major powers as the throw was a 1!

The weather throw was also a 1 - Fine everywhere.

The situation in USSR looks safe enough. No real need to pass for the Allies. Better to use what impulses they get to put preasure on other fronts.

----

Where are the Allies planning to invade? And when? Maybe a minor invasion close to Tripoli next turn?

The Germans choose not to undertake any ground strikes. They want to be able to rebase as much as possible.

Its a race to Sardinia. Neither side can get to Cagliari this turn, but both will be in a position to land on the first impulse next turn (if they have the initiative - and subject to weather in the case of the Allies who have to invade).

There is just the one attack in the Soviet Union this impulse. The units in the north and south are pretty much at their limit in terms of supply chain and/or are disorganised. The attack to be carried out, northeast of Dnepropetrovsk, will split the Soviet southern forces in two if successful.

Meanwhile, the Tiger of Malaya - Yamashita - is going to attempt to take Singapore.

For the attack on Singapore the odds are 4:1 no modifiers on the Assault table - and Fractional odds bring this up to 5:1.....

...its a 2! The 4th (Australian) Mechanised Corps is destroyed and Singapore falls for the loss of the 2nd SNLF Marine Division.

In the Ukraine the odds are 5:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table...

...its another rubbish throw - 4. There are no losses to either side but the defenders are shattered (I do not convert).

The Dniepr has been well and truly breached. Three powerful German Corps have created a bridgehead over the river, slicing the Soviet forces in two.

The Germans have 4 re-bases. They re-base a fighter and a bomber in both the north and the south. This is not good for the Soviets....

One ground strike undertaken this impulse - against Koniev west of Stalino. The results are rubbish and the Dornier boys return to base in disgrace.

With the Germans stalled in the north, the focus this impulse is the Ukraine once more. The Germans take a chance and vacate Kiev in order to try and widen the gap between the Soviet Armies around Stalino and those around Kiev. This results in two attacks...

Koniev has little choice but to try and add HQ Support - but the throw is a 9!

There is only one Soviet bomber that can reach either hex under attack. However both are guarded by BF-109s and so the bomber stays on the ground.

The first attack is against the hex west of Stalino and is a 3:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table....

...its another 9. The Soviets lose the Stalino Militia and Koniev is Shattered (not converted).

The Soviets lose another precious fighter in the advance after combat.

For the second attack the Germans (i.e. me [8|]) have failed to include an Armour unit in the attack - thus giving the Soviets the Assault table for this 3:! no modifier attack.

It matters not - the dice roll is a 10 (first one for the Germans?). The Soviets lose both units...
