The Axis winning the initiative means that they can reinforce Sardinia without fear of being intercepted.

How about the Allies invade in Tunisia or Libya instead. Preferably close to Tripoli?

No. Crete is a territory so you need presence there when Greece is conquered or Crete go neutral.

I think they may need to - time is now of the essence.

The Germans attempt three ground strikes, but make something of an error at Stalino. They miss a Soviet fighter that can fly in interception. Fortunately they get away with the error (the bomber aborts rather than being shot down).

Further north, the Luftwaffe employ their tank-busting Ju-87 variant for the first time - the sexy beast!

There are two attacks planned for the Soviet Union this impulse. The weather has played havoc with supply (as was always the danger).

The targets are Minsk and the forest hex east of Kiev.

In the south the Soviet air force flies in defence. The odds are only just in the Luftwaffe's favour - and the Soviets have two bombers to one. Allies to throw first:

Round 1
7 - DA the German player decides to abort the German bomber.
7 - AA the German player again has the choice and chooses to abort the Soviet fighter

The odds are now heavily in favour of the German, but the Soviets decide to stick around for one go to see if they get lucky.

Round 2
15 - DA they do! the Germans have to abort their front fighter.
10 - AC the Soviets get some luck at last - one bomber is cleared through.

The Soviets can abort their second bomber having affected the odds.

For the attack on Minsk the Germans bring in Karl Student and his 1st Fallschirmjager Corps. This helps to give odds of 5:1 no modifiers on the Assault table....

...its a 7. Both Soviet units are destroyed for no loss.

For the second attack the odds are 3:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table....

...it's a 3. One unit each is lost and the Germans must lose their Engineer. All units are disorganised.

A huge impulse coming up for the CW for the simple reason that they HAVE to get things moving or time will simply run out.

I have - as usual - mucked up on placement of certain units [8|] and so my naval placements are not entirely as I would like. I am also paying for my shortage of TRS and AMPH. But here is the plan:

1. A much denuded Home Fleet (with Admiral Tovey aboard his Flagship HMS Rodney) has sailed to the North Sea to guard against any aggression from the Kriegsmarine. I should have used the Beaufort in Harwich in the North Sea too but didn't [:-]

In the Western Mediterranean the CW will be invading - although I cannot say where in case the Axis are looking at this [:D]

A picket, in the form of two cruisers and a Sunderland guard the 4-sea box, while two fleets - the troop convoy and Force H - are stationed in the 0 and 3 boxes respectively.

Troop Convoy and its covering force (led by Vice-Admiral Holland in his Flagship HMS Hood):

This leaves the Royal Navy with Admiral Cunningham's Mediterranean fleet (Flagship HMS Warspite and three of the other four Queen Elizabeth-class battleships) as a troubleshooting force to provide additional support in the Western Mediterranean as required:

Sep/Oct 1942
Impulse: 5

Hitler is alarmed at the huge RN naval activity in Mussolini's "Mare Nostrum" [8|]

But as odd as it may sound, the Italians actually have a plan in response....

The Axis prepare to port attack Valletta. Only problem is their fighters are out of range and the RN has a 4-quality Fulmar to fly in defence from HMS Implacable. No matter - if they can get lucky and knock one or two out of the sky then this will help the defence of Sardinia...

Non-phasing side rolls a 1
Phasing side rolls a 2

What does that all mean? Well the Allies have 7 surprise points and the Axis have 4. The CW increase their air-to-air combat by 1

Ah.. maybe this wasn't such a great plan. The FAA have a 2.0:4.4 advantage over the Axis aircraft.... Allies to throw first:

Round 1
14 - AA The Condor is aborted
10 - DC Effectively no result

The Axis have no choice but to withdraw. Note to self (as Axis player) set up Naval Air and Fighters to threaten Malta at all times!

The Fulmars return to Implacable in time for tea and medals, while a matelot on deck shows off his skills at tapping his head while rubbing his belly in a circular motion, to the pilot.

I WILL get the hang of the naval game one day....perhaps....maybe [:D]

I decide to fly FAA units to attack the Italian transports in Cagliari - forgetting that Carrier Air are also disorganised when used - so I do not have the benefit of the 4-strength Fulmar fighter [8|].

Instead we have a battle of WWI proportions [:)]

Hang on though - the CW have just thrown a worryingly high number...

...yep, sure enough the Axis have 5 surprise points. Needless to say they choose to avoid combat - it would likely only take one Swordfish to smash the TRS - and they are the only TRS the Italians have...

So I will re-load the game at the Port Attack phase and basically not bother with a Port Attack.

No - change of plan. Let's see what happens if the Italians do not avoid combat.

So they use their surprise points to both increase their air to air combat value AND reduce the CW's.

Round 1 (Axis throw first)

9 - No Effect
11 - DC. Effectively no effect as there are no Axis bombers

Round 2

12 - AC Italy decides which bomber to clear through. They choose the Orange Swordfish.
7 - DA The Italian fighter aborts.

The remaining bomber was cleared through.

The two FAA fighters successfully land on their carriers.
