Jim D Burns -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/12/2014 6:11:16 PM)

Gary's been coding games since when, mid 80s? I doubt he'll be doing any other major designs past the big one that joins it all together. Unless you don't think he'd ever want to retire. I've loved every game he's ever made and would love him to go on till he falls over at his keyboard, but my guess is retirement would follow this last big effort.

Zovs -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/12/2014 8:37:48 PM)

Yeah you'd think his brain would be a hurtin by now, lol...he must just want to never touch another computer soon...

MrsWargamer -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/12/2014 9:36:02 PM)

He promised to re build Steel Panthers, and I'm holding him to it :)

He can retired any time after that.

rwenstrup -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/12/2014 9:55:10 PM)

+1 on the Steel Panthers rebuild!!!

CGGrognard -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/12/2014 10:35:27 PM)

+1 on the rebuild of Steel Panthers! [:D]

Retirement? Can't blame him for that, since I just did last month! I guess he might be as old as me (Can't tell from his photo on the 2by3 site)I do remember his games back in the SSI text game days, seems to me.

Actually, he came in after the text days (ie. Computer Napoleonics from 1980) and is responsible for the entire "dot" days (graphics in lo-res... See 1982's Guadalcanal Campaign & Bomb Alley). Where it really took off for me was with 1985' Kampfgruppe (until I stumbled on it's Achilles heel, which was corrected for Battlegroup).

Having 32 years of published computer wargames is nothing to sneeze at. We should all be looking forward his next 32 years worth! I'm already salivating over "Armchairs in the East," "Wheelchairs in the West," "Geriatrics against Japan."

GenChaos33 -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/14/2014 11:45:13 PM)

How about a monster US Civil War game? Something like a 200 yard hex with millions of total hexes!

That wouldn't have been the unlimited stacking feature would it? [:'(]

Civil War is not in the Grigsby Game cycle... WWII or WWIII/Cold War.

I was trying not to ruin it for others that hadn't stumbled upon it (younger people should really look into retro-gaming more). If a person had enough initiative, I believe the fix from Battlegroup could be incorporated into Kampfgruppe (especially as most of Kampfgruppe is written in Applesoft basic).

But I sure had a whole lot of fun with it until I accidentally stumbled on that. That was the game that turned me on the Eastern front (and off of the Western front). Not only that, but it convinced me that computer wargaming was more fun than a hangover! (although there were similarities the next day, regarding amounts of sleep obtained)

Are you aware this is the Matrix Games general discussion area? There is absolutely no room for facts here! This area is reserved for name calling, feuds, politics, European-only sports, slander, libel, misquotes, misdirection, and spam (if you don't believe me, randomly read three or more other threads).

(And besides, that's an anomaly outside of the cycle! I think he must've been dabbling in substances between cycles! That's the only valid explanation for that aberration from a well-known business plan!)

You left out australian beauties thread that is rarely about australian beauties anymore an of course[:'(] And the more popular "Let's bash STEAM" threads that pop up every so often and make everybody happy. [:'(]

How about starting a thread about members here who have 2 accounts and have the same basic writing style it is obvious it is the same person.[8|][8|]

Rising-Sun -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/15/2014 8:17:14 AM)

Yeah Gary been coding building those games since the 80's I doubt if he will still continue making more. Someone close to him may pick up the pieces and keep trying to improve it and well expand it.

You are correct, after the post I got to thinking that maybe it was Norm Koeger I was thinking about!
Retirement is fun, I actually reloaded East Front on this new computer and trying to learn it over again before West Front is out. Not been playing many wargames lately both my longtime gaming buddies got caught up in life and don't play anymore.
Who made that color east front game I played on my Atari 130 back in 1978/79 more or less? Was that Gary? Losing my memory I'm afraid.

Chris Crawford did Eastern Front.

Grotius -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/15/2014 5:17:51 PM)

Does Gary Grigsby lurk or post here? If he does, presumably he's not using his name as his forum handle.

Jim Burns mentioned that he's planning a massive merger of WITE/WITW. I know this has been asked before, but is there any realistic possibility they'd toss in WITP for good measure? :)

Joel Billings was answering questions in the WITE forum. And he was using his real name.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

Old coders never die, they just get deprecated.

This made me LAUGH.

MrsWargamer -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/16/2014 12:17:56 PM)

It's directed at me, I have no idea what the point is, I renamed my account to sync with my account on the Slitherine forums.

Since 1999, I have not had the same account name consistently. I happen to know of numerous persons for one of numerous reasons all valid that have had to redo their account.

Aside from not retaining the entirely meaningless post count totals, and the equally meaningless account seniority states, you gain nothing else for never having changed in any fashion.

Some of the members here, have had the same writing style (a tedious one) and the same original account (judging by post counts and join date) and likely think they possess some sort of magical quality (they don't :) ). I suppose it might be interesting to know precisely how many posts I personally have posted since 2000, but considering database disasters of the past render that calculation impossible. Besides, epenis behaviour is a man's problem. I don't really care how many posts any of you have posted. Considering the percentage of them where you have posted something memorable like '+1' (riveting dialogue that eh).

Regardless of the conspiracies some of you boys desperately need to believe in, there is only one me here. Some times I wonder why this me is here :)

charlie0311 -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/16/2014 1:22:46 PM)

MS Warg,

I like you stuff, "epenis" is going to be especially inflammatory. I also like Ann Coulter so maybe I'm the weird one.

Keep it up.

vonRocko -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/16/2014 1:53:59 PM)

Sounds more like "epenis envy". I may be wrong mrswargamer, but I think bairdlanders comment was meant for aaatoysandmore.

MrsWargamer -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/16/2014 3:13:28 PM)

Nah, he sent me a PM as if he was suddenly privy to some sort of valuable secret :)

Can someone translate Charlie's post into Canadian English for me?

DerTroof -> RE: 2By3 games of the future (11/17/2014 2:43:43 PM)

WBTS 2. The original is just a few tweaks short of greatness.

Then add me to the weird list, for I also like Ann Coulter.
