***********January 7, 1942(e)****** One month of fighting and they are picking of Australian cities like sitting ducks. Cairns: Fell to ground attack. Hardly a surprise as we had no AV there. Townsville:** Landing at Townsville with the equivalent of about 2 regiments of infantry. We have an Australian reserve brigade not yet at full strength and some US and Aussie support units. Level 1 forts. Theoretically we have way more AV points but the reality is the brigade is green and understrength. We need to get the planes and ships out of there. One CA and one DD and essentially undamaged and have full main gun ammo and fuel. They will ahve to go first and try to break out toward Horn Island as Jap carriers are parked off the barrier reef about 250 miles NE of Brisbane. It looks like another amphibious group headed SE along the reef perhaps bound for Rockhampton or Bundaberg or evern Brisbane.

We lost one previously damaged CA, previously damaged Achilles and a damaged USN DD. Quite a few WJD carriers planes lost. Likely a new landing coming near Brisbane. We are just getting hammered.

The chief problem was damaged ships not being able to run fast enough. New Caledonia looking vulnerable and so is New Zealand. As for OZ, our best hope is they gather too much momentum and trip the emergency reinforcements. [:)]

Any moves to bring the British 18th Div back from Darwin? They'd be useful north of Brisbane about now. Stay away from defending Rockhampton, the jap CA/BB's will nuke you in a clear hex. Bundaberg can also be easily bypassed by road. Have you been stockpiling squads to upgrade the Aussie divisions yet? Fighters or bombers on the way from CONUS? What about the Aussies that come in from Aden- to India, Australia or elsewhere?
