Air Interdiction and Combats Turn 34

Baelfiin -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/21/2015 8:43:09 PM)

End of Turn 34

Looks like GRAPEVINE is a success, I have 6 units surrounded and a big dent in the German line.
The Germans are just being vaporized by my attacks, they must be super tired and out of supply from my constant bombardment.
I tried to clear a mountain hex, but failed.

Turn 35

Once again AWG has outplayed me.
I felt pretty good about pocketing 6 units, even celebrated with a Rice Krispie treat.

However the next day I find that I celebrated too early and too long.

Not only did AWG evacuate some dudes by sea, he put the rest of his troops in supply, so that I can't get them to surrender this turn either.
Hats off to a brilliant move [&o]

Baelfiin -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/23/2015 2:25:33 PM)

Supply is low again, I console myself with routing the ancona garrison and pushing across one river.

German units are really beat down, I keep fighting the same worn out guys every turn.

I keep expecting Kampfgruppe Pelton to show up and put a stop to my adventures but the word on the street is that the Russian Front is on fire and German High Command has ordered everyone east . . . .

If you take the port at Livorno it will help with your lack of supply. It's a size 4 port.

ahhh good to hear, hope you are feeling better.

I am afraid of all of those germans up there, but I will see what I can do 8)

Baelfiin -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/25/2015 3:21:51 AM)

Turn 36

I decided to push forward to the Arno to start getting some attrition on the German line.

I was very surprised to see no one home on the other side of the river.

Smashed some undermanned forts on the east coast.

Air campaign against railroads and v weapons continuing in the north.

Russian Front stealing all the German replacements, I seem to be hitting 3 squads of walking wounded and a machinegun everytime I attack.

marion61 -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/25/2015 4:14:07 AM)

Reporting from Corsica: No axis paratroopers yet on Corsica. My suggestion is to get those armored divisions and the mech. units over onto the west side. the terrain in the east part is terrible tank country. And your right flank is awfully weak. I hope he doesn't press you on that flank. But your doing a fine job so far. Don't beat your head on the east coast, because it will cost more vp's attacking those huge stacks than it's worth.

Baelfiin -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/25/2015 4:49:37 PM)

Nothing but clear terrain in front of me on the east coast.

After last two turns I feel like there is an opportunity to break the German lines.

After this turn I feel even stronger that the German lines are cracking.

This paradrop I have planned may be a bridge too far. . .

Work getting in the way of Combat Cartography

End of Turn 38

Melting Germans make me decide to push as hard as possible and see what happens.

The Germans bailing out of the west coast make it much easier.

German lines completely broken, not one attack this turn.

Allies run wild across northern Italy

Turn 40

I think I have surrounded every German left in Italy.

I wonder how long my supply lines will hold up?

I hope you don't mind me "tooting" my own horn, but this all started because of some succinct advice? That you questioned and exiled me to Corsica for![;)] Isolating all those units south of your invasion put a hurt on his manpower. Now my advice is, don't waste much time on this side show, cause the Alps are too easily defended. Make sure your French invasion has enough push to reach Berlin. Don't waste those good units in Italy, when you could be using them in France.

Why go through the Alps when he can go around them?
If he cuts east he can pick up three more ports (Trieste is a size 6) and get due south of Vienna before heading north.
It's a little longer overland than the path from the Channel to Berlin, but what is there to stop him?
Considering how much of the German army in Italy is getting loaded up to pick potatoes in the States the opportunity seems pretty golden.
Open terrain for Patton to have a field day and where is Germany going to find any units to act as speed bumps?
Flying supplies is still pretty generous, and without much opposition those armored divisions will swallow up terrain fast (and defenders!).
The dam has broken. He grabbed 50 miles in the last week. If he follows that path Berlin is about 650 miles away, whereas your suggested Atlantic Wall invasion site is nearly 600 miles from Berlin, with lots of already built up fortifications in the way.
I wouldn't sit on my hands in Northern Italy in light of capturing so many Germans. If they were still in some semblance of a line, maybe - but they're gone.

You got a promotion and responsibility to plan my invasion for southern france. Which, by the way I have not yet seen a plan for . . . . =p

"... my invasion for southern france."

think about your troops, Do you want them eating that rich food and those heavy sauces?

stay in italy, and Hannibal into Germany.

Sir, I beg to differ. France is yours, just turn left at Genoa, take Toulon, and Marseilles. You want to take city points, and attacking thru the alps will take a lot of time, and casualties, and you aren't taking cities to offset your casualties. Those mountains can be defended with just a regiment per hex and casualties will be high pushing them out. Heading towards the west and you have all those cities to capture. That's my advice, and you may not need to actually invade Northern France. Marseilles alone can supply all or most of your units in France.

Why attack through the Alps when he can hustle around them to the east and head to Berlin on the shortest route (certainly shorter than from Marseilles).
Are there no points for taking Vienna, Prague, etc? There is a dearth of natural barriers, and NO manmade barriers at that stage.

Plenty of rail net to support a supply line from Trieste and the other two nearby ports. Keep TR aircraft nearby to ensure Patton's boys keep their fuel tanks topped off and RIDE!

This will force the Germans to weaken France and he can go ahead and hit there as well, but I would keep that armor pouring north and east, until you can head due north to Vienna.
Italy truly is the soft underbelly when there are no German counters left on the map...

Can units enter Yugoslavia? I thought it was prevented by rule.

If you can't enter Yugoslavia, you have to go over the Alps, not around

Balou -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/30/2015 4:57:47 PM)

Somebody knows what happens in case the WA hit/meet the East Front, eg near Vienna or Budapest ?

Joel Billings -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/30/2015 5:36:50 PM)

No, you can't go through Yugoslavia so getting north should be very difficult.

I didn't realize that, but you are correct:

quote:

Ground Unit Exclusion Zone: Some areas
are normally off limits to ground units other
than air HQ units. Air Base units and air group units
are allowed in these areas, as are air HQ units and
antiaircraft support units attached to locations. Ground
units other than Air HQ units are not allowed in these
areas. The areas off limits are Hungary, Rumania,
Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Axis
controlled parts of the Soviet Union. Units cannot rout
into ground unit exclusion zones. Units can be retreated
one hex into an exclusion zone. Once there, they will
automatically be displaced during their logistics phase
to a nearby friendly town, city or urban hex.
Neutral (Impassable) Terrain: No air, ground or naval
units may move, rout, or retreat into Spain, Andorra,
Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland, Norway or the parts of
the Soviet Union that have been captured by the Soviet
advance.

Still, it looks as though you can capture Trieste and the other two ports, then head NE on an axis through Villach-Klagenfurt-Graz, then north through Vienna without much in the way of mountains for the defenders to hole up in.
I also just checked and I was able to rail a German and Italian unit into Slovakia (but not Hungary). I even rolled into the next turn to check and they were not displaced.
Not sure if that is a bug, or errata in the manual, but Slovakia does not appear to be off limits

Baelfiin -> RE: INVADE? Need advice.... (1/30/2015 9:25:17 PM)

here it is in picture form
you would think that with those major ports you could supply that line of advance, but it is not working for me.
Its really hard to ship freight into those ports for whatever reason.

Germans have fled, all that is left is to liberate the last parts of Italy.

I bump into some Germans on the road to Vienna, Shouldn't be too much of a problem to wipe them out in passing . . . .
