For probably the very first time in this game I have come up against the difficult choice of do I or do I not commit the KB. Every other time I have committed to action I was certain that it was the right time and place to do so. Today I must decide to commit or bide my time. The Allies, during the previous turn, have come ashore, in strength, at Noumea. The Japanese long ago abandoned New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. I know that American carriers, of some kind, are present as I have received plentiful reports of carrier based planes harassing the numerous Japanese subs in the area. CAP has also accounted for 2 submarine based search planes. I know that the USN has Enterprise, Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga and at least 1 Essex plus an unknown number of CVLs and CVEs. Therefore, I expect that Todd will have all his major carriers grouped together in the same hex. Given the size of the landing force I expect that he will have employed his carriers as supporting cover. I realize, now, that I should have left a search element either at Koumac or Espiritu Santo to help work out just where the USN TFs have positioned themselves. Herein lies my dilemma. I have created a position where I am blind as to the position of the USN and their carriers. Fortunately, Tod should be in a similar position as the KB has not reported any sighing reports on itself. So far, I have sailed outside the effective range of his search planes. This will change very quickly once Noumea falls and the airfield is up and running with search planes. My thinking is that if I do indeed launch a strike it must be this coming turn before Allied land based search becomes a factor. As for the IJN. What carrier assets did we bring to the table. KB has Akagi, Taiho, Zuikaku, Shokaku, Hiryu, Soryu, Amagi, Unyru, Katsuragi, Zuiho and Ryujo. A good number split into two TFs. The A6M5 is the standard fighter with dive bombers sporting Judy and torpedo bombers all switched over to Jill. I just know the USN will have a swag of planes at least as good and mostly better. My objective in sending KB was to attempt a culling of the Allied transports rather than engaging in a fight with the US carriers. Come mid-October the A6M8 will come on line and once that model boards KB I would consider the time to be right for taking on the American carriers. For now, though I must weigh up the risks of sending in a strike aimed at TFs in and around Noumea versus the very real possibility that US carriers will react towards me (assuming KB is detected and I assume it will be). How many fighters to protect any alpha strike and how many fighters to leave at home in case of Allied strikes. I am also considering sending in a decoy TF of a couple of destroyers and heavily capping it to draw out and savage an American alpha strike. Decision made. KB is ordered to a position 7 hexes away from Noumea. We may find nothing but I expect there will be shipping there looking to keep supply coming in for all those troops on the ground. We may possibly stay out of search range but the likelihood of discovery must be high especially should the USN make a move to the north. We have 160 Zero on CAP patrol. Todd finally has his day in the sun. No doubt the naval air war initiative has passed into the hands of the Allies. Great positioning of the Allied carriers to draw off the majority of the IJN aerial assaults. Some small success but of course no where near enough to off set the lost aircraft and crews. The torpedo arm of the KB has been severely mauled. Time to race off and keep arms distances from the Allied buzz saw. A little breathing space while the Allies mop up New Caledonia and New Hebrides and then the real grind will start. No more free islands for the Allies to take back. So, a little time has gone now for me to absorb the damage done to the KB strike force. We lost 28 fighters. Bearable. 27 dive bomber crews. Also, bearable. 70 torpedo bomber crews. Cataclysmic. The torpedo bomber crews and planes have been gutted however we have 124 crews left so a core of good crews is left to form the basis of a regrouping. A horrendous loss rate for what is quite likely to be a result of 1 LST sunk. Perhaps that CVE might go down but she is so close to Noumea that she has a great chance of being saved. Guess it will depend on what damage was caused by the 2 torpedoes that struck her. Princeton is surely going to make it to Noumea. On board the 9 CVs and 2 CVLs currently making up KB we have 359 fighter pilots. They are a little lacking in planes with 236 Zeros available for their use. KB is moving away from New Caledonia with plans afoot to reconfigure and fill out the depleted torpedo bomber groups. In the overall strategic situation Todd has received a big morale boost which will give him the drive to press on with the reconquest of the Japanese gains. How well I can blunt his assaults will soon be determined. I hope I have more than just a house of cards to bar his path to the Home Islands.

I'm unlikely to do too much contesting in the New Hebrides but the Solomons is a different proposition. I'm glad that my fighters didn't get chewed up. I'm now eagerly awaiting mid October to get the A6M8 in production. The SAM it isn't but I do want armour protection before I think about taking on the Death Star again. I love an Allied players sensitivity to losses. Todd said that he took some damage which wasn't bad.... But it was bad enough. Makes me think that just maybe that CVE went down and Princeton has damage bad enough to send her back to a yard.

Todd enquired if it was expensive to buy out from Burma to China the units I have at Poashan. Currently I have what was the Guards Division (forget the new name) at Poashan. The Guards of course belong to southern Army. I have been using PP to buy out restricted units from China and the Home Islands and generally place them in Southern Army. The Sothern Army I have engaged all over the place and plenty of Southern Army units start out in China. My question is does one have change HQ to send units back into China? I had not thought so but would like some clarification from the knowledge pool. If I'm misguided in my thinking I need to be set straight.

Let you subs try to whittle down him as he moves north and rebuild quickly and if he suffers a few carrier loses, or damaging to your subs you might want to try another shot t his carriers before it becomes uneven.

The attempt to whittle down Todd's carrier strength before it becomes too huge underpinned this wasteful attempt to do him damage. I certainly will be looking to rebuild the TB arm and then look to use KB coupled with LBA. It does depend a lot on what Todd will use as his axis of attack once he has consolidated New Caledonia and New Hebrides. I want him to head north via Guadalcanal but I really think he will head for the central Pacific. It is the route he went last time we played and once he is in it effectively cuts out the Solomons. The other problem is the dispersed nature of the Central Pacific Island makes the use of LBA far less effective. Within a month or two we should see which route he will take.

All the southern Chinese mountain bases have fallen. Now remains the problem of destroying the remnants before they can reach Burma and then India. 32nd Division is racing out of Kunming to deal with that lone unit. The rest will hopefully get cleaned up before they reach Paoshan. They are very weak and surrender should come fast once the IJA catches up with them. The Chinese once based at Kukong made a break for it in the last few weeks. They are now attempting to mess with the back roads. We now have many divisions in the area fresh from their success at Chungking. The Chinese are being hemmed in and their attempt at mayhem will soon falter. My current land based focus of attack in Russia is at Choybalsan. The first assault is about to go in and it will tell me a lot about how well I shall fare in taking this base. I want it to secure this flank for the eventual assault on Borzya. If all goes well here I will consider taking the base to the left for further insurance. No lightning in this land. Thunder though. So much thunder as the gates of Choybalsan were smote into wooden shards. In the shadowy distance a steel wolf stood off in silence. Patiently watching and waiting until Hector ceased flinching. Ceased the desperate will to survive. Struggle no more. Slip away from the living world. Gliding now. Gliding down to the eternal watery depths.

Yesterday the Lightning raids over Jodphur. Today the first sighting of Liberators in this game. I am very pleased with the effort of the Tojo pilots over Bombay. They were loitering there awaiting the armoured version of the Tojo (the factories are going like the clappers to get this model out to the front lines). Plenty of top notch pilots at Bombay and they did sterling work on the Allied bombers. Todd has a liking to come in low (5000 on these runs) and I noted barrage balloons having an effect as well. Todd has built up quite the pool of aircraft at Karachi so I expect more raids. I also have a convoy of tankers on the way to pick up some 60 000 worth of oil being stored at Bombay. Could be an interesting exercise getting the oil out. SS I-15 in ARD Dublon ARD at Truk (good to see. Don’t think I have ever seen the ARD in use). We agreed to activate the Soviets at the beginning of each game. Gave us a little behind the scenes fun as Stalin would send out a steady stream of demands such as let my recon planes fly over certain bases, don't station your troops in this particular location. Basically just get out of my face while I am busy dealing with the Germans. Last time nothing came of it until the usual end of war rampage by the Soviets. This time Stalin was most upset at the Japanese making forays into Chines territory near his border. I basically ignored that. Stalin wanted and persisted with recon flights over Japanese bases. That actually lead to a few aerial skirmishes. I developed a very healthy respect for the MiG-3 from that point onward. Soviet subs would also sally forth and take shots at and sink merchant shipping in my back yard. Always blamed the Americans but I knew better. So, in short, the Japanese where doing so well elsewhere on the board that the decision was finally taken to take on the Soviets as well. It will all end in tears but I'm having fun so far and learning as I go. I dare say that Todd have been learning a fair bit about the Soviet mid war situation as well.
