I know radar ranges are ever contested, and usually don't write about it to avoid irresoluble feuds.

But the last week discovered one or some Korean Wikipedia editors have detailed some radar ranges compilations and number of T/R modules (From OSINT) on many radar types entries on Korean Wikipedia:
https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/SPY-1

And here Chinese radar ranges (Obviously South Koreans are very interested on it!):
https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/346%EC%8B%9D_%EB%A0%88%EC%9D%B4%EB%8D%94

(Sorry, I will add this post on the adequate platform database thread).

Dysta -> RE: Naval News (3/3/2018 1:45:46 AM)

I mentioned about Type 346/A radars long time ago, even today nobody knows about their performance, and I saw some heated discussions compare to SPY-1. The only confirmation is 346/A are AESA, and the game did gave them better jammimg-resistence than SPY-1. However, many doubts were casted due to the smaller energy usage compare to SPY-1, as well as the powerplant in 052C/D are subpar to Burke, many analysts suggests they are at best have the same range, if Type 346 may incur some inferior outputs.

That's why the new 055 destroyer have a slightly bigger Type 346A than old one from 052D, thanks by richly provided powerplants. Yet, it's too soon to tell how far it can detect even the "output issue" has been solved. I remember thewood1 mentioned why Chinese were hesitant to install new sensors, and one of the reason could be the energy deficiency.

kevinkins -> RE: Naval News (3/5/2018 12:21:33 PM)

A rather gutsy strategy to say the least:

http://www.defenddemocracy.org/media-hit/emanuele-ottolenghi-trump-should-block-irans-air-corridor-to-syria/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ebb%2003.05.18&utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief

However, I see some scenario ideas in siming the implementation. I can not envision downing transports in the air full of passengers. But knocking out a few on the ground once off-loaded might send a "virtual message" to Tehran.

A detachment of F-35B Lightning II's from Fighter Attack Squadron 121 (VMFA-121) has arrived aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1).

It's a great opportunity to study what exactly happened to her demise. Nowadays a sunken warship like this would be a global headline for months.

---------------------

For some jet fighter enthusiasts and audiophiles, the 'music' of F-135 would be their wet dreams. But for some residents and potential enemies, that 'noise' would gives more trouble to F-35, compare to the debacle level from F-16:

---------------------

War can be as cruel as it's impression. Iraqi CH-4B is serviced for 3 years and achieved nearly 100% effectiveness against over 200 targets, and still the media just rated it "Pretty Good". Is 200% effectiveness shall be qualified as "Excellent"?

Chinese UUV debut at Indian Sea by CCTV. It is for undersea mapping, but also have drawn India's ire because the "navigation" is a potential military conduct:

AlGrant -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/7/2018 10:51:59 AM)

An interesting read:

NATO needs a new Maritime Strategy for its Northern Flank.
https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/nato-needs-new-maritime-strategy-northern-flank/

" Although the odds would hardly be overwhelmingly in favour of the UK formation, a Royal Navy carrier group (supported by escorts from Northern European navies, submarines and land based aircraft) positioned between Iceland and Scotland on the main GIUK gap route into the North Atlantic would represent a formidable obstacle to any Russian submarines or maritime strike aircraft seeking to interdict NATO’s SLOC."

Now there's a scenario waiting to be built!

BrianinMinnie -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/7/2018 3:10:44 PM)

Hey All,

Is there already a way to use this kind of defensive or offensive capability in Command that’s being mentioned in this article by Tyler Rogoway?

http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/19012/american-destroyer-packed-new-electronic-warfare-system-during-black-sea-mission

or is it already wrapped into the JAM or JAMMMED calculation?

Thanks

ExNusquam -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/8/2018 10:11:09 PM)

AN/SLQ-32(v)6 is already modeled on the 2018 Burkes (and the 2015 DDG 96). It's capabilities are wrapped up under the tech level (Early 2010s vs. 1980s for the (v)3).

Dysta -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/9/2018 8:34:59 AM)

If you found your pilots live-streaming some dogfight footages to the internet, don't be surprised. Commercial satellite networks may open the window for military as well:

That annoying ship is back off Georgia:

http://freebeacon.com/national-security/russian-spy-ship-off-georgia-coast/

"The most obvious purpose of the ship being off the coast is collecting signals intelligence," Watkins said in an email.

"The ship is outfitted with more than antennas above the water line," he said. "Viktor Leonov is reported to have magnetic anomaly sensors, acoustic gear to profile American vessels, and have the capability to map the ocean's floor."

The ship is likely mapping the paths used by submarines in or out of the base and that also conduct training missions in nearby waters.

"It could be looking for uncharted cables that might be connected to previously unknown sensors, or DoD communications cables that reach across the ocean," Watkins said.

Hongjian -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/11/2018 10:25:49 AM)

Isnt the Khinzal more an ASBM of some sort? Of course, it doesnt exactly follow a predictable ballistic trajectory.

Triode -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/11/2018 11:16:41 AM)

Proper term I think will be aeroballistic AShM, plane used as first stage after all.

ASBM is things like R-27K or DF-21

also longer version of video without music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBzp36j0OXo

Hongjian -> RE: Naval & Defense News (3/11/2018 2:42:42 PM)

Interesting... This might bring the concurring PLAAF effort to develop the H-6N with an air-launched DF-16 ASBM version into perspective. Maybe it too will be an aeroballistic AShM instead of a pure ASBM.

USS Wasp - which now has F-35Bs on-board - is going to participate in next month's joint US-South Korean landing exercise:

Alternatively, use reusable rocket stage. Both unit and operation costs are lower than aircraft-firing variant, but the problem would be unable to call off the attack.

A bit on weapons for the F35:

Provides a short comparison of the GBU-12 Paveway II to the -49 they seek to deploy.

You Brexit You Fix It scenario may comes with better favor to UK, because NATO had found a reason to stand together after the assassination and polticial mayhem caused by Russia. However, many media sites whom reported this are flooded with both UK and Russian sympathizers
exchanging words of what KGB and MI5/6 have done during cold war, as if the assassination is a common exercise if not as dramatic as 007 movies:

The public use of nerve agents would be a first for covert assassination that I'm aware of. Must be from the Moscow theater hostage crisis playbook...

These have been used by the Iraqi Air Force and Lebanese Air Force for years quite effectively. They're probably cheaper than a MQ-9 since you don't need the SATCOM equipment or the ground station. Probably easier to get parts as well.

kevinkins -> RE: Naval and Defense News (3/15/2018 9:51:12 PM)

Hey ExNusquam

Could more details of those operations by the Iraqi Air Force and the Lebanese Air Force be provided? The details would/could make for cool scenarios.

Many Thanks.

Kevin

I haven't seen any details on specific operations. Google will find plenty of news articles on their delivery and employment (WiB is a good start). I think Iraq has had them since 2010.

I'm not sure there's great scenario material there, since they're effectively MQ-1s with less on-station time and fewer payload options.

kevinkins -> RE: Naval and Defense News (3/16/2018 11:01:25 AM)

Thanks. Very interesting info about the AC-208 Combat Caravan. My flight sim friends who "fly" in places like Alaska will also be fascinated. It is a rugged guy with STOL and can handle fairly dirty environments. The flight sim community could very well mod the caravan with some more technical detail. It's in the DB available in 2011 to the Iraqi AF. Wiki: "Other AC-208s are scheduled to be delivered to countries in the Middle East and Africa through the Foreign Military Sales program. Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Burkina Faso are possible recipients of these AC-208 Combat Caravans."

https://www.orbitalatk.com/defense-systems/defense-electronic-systems/ac-208/

And just as I started to look into this:
