This has a nice map that shows China's naval (approximate) OOB and (approximate) locations of their assets within three areas of operations:

https://www.ctpost.com/technology/businessinsider/article/US-submarines-are-better-than-China-s-by-far-13222115.php

The map is from January so you guys have may have seen it already.

Looks like China has lengthened at least one of its earlier Kilo 877EKMs to install AIP.

Isn't Israel one of the richest Mediterranean country that is self-sustaining with their own economy and military? Why they need China's money for this?

The United States and Germany give them lots of money too. Mainly in weapons sales, but why pay if you can get someone else to?
That being said the U.S. won't be happy about it, but I'm sure Israel has a say when it comes to Chinese Military coming into the area.

Russia's defense ministry says it lost contact with an IL-20 aircraft, Syrian state TV reports

A Russian military Il-20 aircraft with 14 service members on board went off the radars during an attack by four Israeli jets on Syria’s Latakia province, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with the aircraft on Monday evening, during the attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia, said the MOD. The plane was 35 kilometers off the coast of Syria when it vanished.
Russian radars also registered the launch of missiles from a French frigate in the Mediterranean on the evening of September 17.

Filitch -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 8:33:40 AM)

Syria downed Russia's plane because Israeli F-16s used it as cover

Israel air force makes dangerous situation. The notification of its maneuvers arrived at the hotline a minute before the strike, which did not allow the Il-20 to be brought into the safe zone.

Dysta -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 9:47:47 AM)

ASW is mostly about the performance of aircraft, but TASS and VDS from surface ships are also just as sharp. 056A and 054A are definitely more than just "minions", they can hunt submarines if they must:

Where the S-400 Battery Operators not tracking the IAF F-16s? Do they often leave their ELINT Aircraft in a possible engagement envelope?

Il-20 was shot downed by Syrian S-200 not by S-400.

BeirutDude -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 3:49:52 PM)

Point is Russian Battle Management Radar, whether attached to the S-400 or not, should have vectored a valuable ELINT aircraft away from any threat axis. Surely the vaunted S-400 picked up the 16s?

Rebel Yell -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 4:02:25 PM)

The Il-20 went in harm's way. The Russians and the Syrians are at fault for what happened.

wild_Willie2 -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 6:07:15 PM)

Update, according to Putin the Coot was shot down after the attack was already over but the Syrians kept indiscriminately firings missiles at everything that flew.

ExNusquam -> RE: Naval and Defense News (9/18/2018 11:12:23 PM)

Official IDF statement compiled from Twitter:

quote:

Israel expresses sorrow for the death of the aircrew members of the Russian plane that was downed tonight due to Syrian anti-aircraft fire. Israel holds the Assad regime, whose military shot down the Russian plane, fully responsible for this incident. Israel also holds Iran and the Hezbollah terror organization accountable for this unfortunate incident.

Overnight, IDF fighter jets targeted a facility of the Syrian Armed Forces from which systems to manufacture accurate and lethal weapons were about to be transferred on behalf of Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon. These weapons were meant to attack Israel, and posed an intolerable threat against it.

The IDF and the Russian army have a deconfliction system, which was agreed upon by the states' leaders, and has proven itself many times over recent years. This system was in use tonight as well.

An initial inquiry of the incident suggests:
1. Extensive and inaccurate Syrian anti-aircraft (Surface to Air missile) fire caused the Russian plane to be hit and downed.
2. When the Syrian Army launched the missiles that hit the Russian plane, IAF jets were already within Israeli airspace.
3. During the strike against the target in Latakia, the Russian plane that was then hit was not within the area of the operation.
4. The Syrian anti-air batteries fired indiscriminately and from what we understand, did not bother to ensure that no Russian planes were in the air.

Israel will share all the relevant information with the Russian Government to review the incident and to confirm the facts in this inquiry.

Given Pres. Putin has walked back his statements (SAM launches after the attack), the official Russian statement doesn't seem to conflict with the official IDF statement.

Of course - no, they don't. F-16I is highest aspiration of aircraft industry, invisible, fast as lightning and smite enemies as thunderbolt. There are rumors that the F-16Is even have ability to submerge and are carriers of ICBMs. There are squadrons, complete with track-type F-16Is having a docking chamber for boats.

Mine warfare in the news:

http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/23705/b-52-tested-2000lb-quickstrike-er-winged-standoff-naval-mines-during-valiant-shield

"Because of the precision and standoff range of Quickstrike-ER, American aircraft can deliver them not just over broad areas around open bodies of water, but they can plant them in rivers, tributaries, canals, and inside port facilities without having to even get near the targeted area. This makes Quickstrike-ER an incredibly nasty and insidious weapon that could wreak havoc on an enemy's naval forces and deny them the ability to make amphibious landings or even leave port."

This is a weapon to redefine the importance of air superiority. Whoever rules the air can do whatever they want on sea and land. Such glide mines will make a heavy notice to China and Russia.

Russian Ministry of Defense briefing about Il-20 incident.
Thesis:
At 21.39 Israel warned a minute before strike.
Israel talks that targets of it strike places at north of Syria. Whereas targets occurs in Latakia, this is west part of Syria. MoD has audiotape as proof. Because of disorienting Il-20 couldn't fly to safe zone.
After strike F-16s reached patrol area 70 km west from coast and was jamming and staying here to 22.40
At 21.51 one of F-16s approached landing Il-20.
Syrian AD take this as new attack.
At 22.03 Syrian SAM struck Il-20, was guiding in target with greater RCS.
Commander of Il-20 reported of fire.
At 22.07 radar clutter of Il-20 disappeared.

quote:

AAD 2018: China's CSOC Unveils 'JARI' Unmanned Surface Combatant - USV

Talking to Navy Recognition at the show, a CSOC representative explained that JARI is multipurpose USV for combat designed for both the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) and export customers. An order has yet to be placed however. CSIC has already produced a prototype which has started sea trials earlier this year.

The main characteristics of the JARI USV (as provided by CSOC) are a length of 15 meters, a breadth of 4.80 meters and a depth of 1.80 meters for a displacement of about 20 tons. The USV maximum speed is 42 knots and its range is 500 nautical miles. In comparison, DARPA's Sea Hunter (a tirmaran USV for ASW) has a length of 40 meters and displacement of about 140 tons.

Based on the scale model on display at the show, JARI sensor suite includes an Active Phased Array Radar (APAR) with four fixed pannels, an electro-optic system, navigation radar and satellite link antenna. We were told that JARI can be control from land or at sea from a "mother ship".

The weapons suite includes a 30mm remote weapon station (as main gun) fitted with an optional pod for "guided and unguided rockets" (according to CSOC). 2x4 vertical launch systems (placed behind the main gun) can deploy surface to air missiles. Final two optional single torpedo launchers (for lightweight torpedoes such as the ET52C) are placed on each side of the superstructure. For anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission, the JARI can be fitted with a sonar.

The USV is propelled by a single water-jet.

Quite heavily armed for its size.
