Thales on Track with FASGW(L) / LMM / Martlet Program for Royal Navy’s Wildcat Helicopters

Thales recently conducted firing trials at Royal Artillery Air Defence Range at Manorbier as part of the Integration testing phase of the Future Anti Surface Guided Weapon (Light), (FASGW(L) programme.

The FASGW(L) programme includes testing of all parts of the weapon system including the Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM), the launcher system and all key equipment of the Wildcat helicopter.

The LMM, which the Royal Navy will call Martlet when it enters service in 2020, will provide an enhanced level of protection for both service personnel in the Royal Navy and vital assets at sea, such as the Queen Elizabeth Carrier.

The trials consisted of 6 LMMs being fired from the Thales designed Launcher system at a small boat target at sea at a distance of 4.5kms. All missiles were test rounds with no warhead, but were fitted with telemetry software enabling data to be gathered to analyse the launcher, the guidance system and missile performance.

That round looks...impressive (in the company-produced cartoon ;) ). I'm very interested in range, and hit probability, as well as mundane aspects such as ammo selection, feed, cost, and depth of magazine. It blurs the line between self-defense missiles and Phoenix-style CIWS.

Dysta -> RE: Naval and Defense News (7/25/2019 1:31:01 AM)

An interesting read:

https://wavellroom.com/2019/06/18/chinese-power-projection-arsenal-ships/

quote:

The ‘All-round Ship’

Rear Admiral Ma Weiming has described what he terms the ‘all-round ship’. This is an advanced surface combatant incorporating all-electric technology to power directed energy weapons, electromagnetic railguns and missile launch systems, enabling the ship to provide area air and missile defence, anti-submarine, and long-range strike (using ballistic and cruise missiles) capabilities at ranges of up to 1,000 km. Long-range air defence would be provided by missile interceptors launched via ‘a universal electromagnetic launcher that can be re-automatically loaded to achieve point-to-point defense’, with an electromagnetic railgun providing defence at ranges between 10 and 200 km; terminal defence would be provide by a laser. The universal electromagnetic launcher would also launch ballistic and cruise missiles for land attack and anti-ship operations at ranges of up to 1,000 km; ‘electromagnetic rockets’ for operations between 200 and 600 km; and the electromagnetic railgun would prosecute land and sea targets within a range of 200 km. The ‘all-round ship’ concept is intended to reduce the cost of acquiring and maintaining advanced warships and weapon systems and enable a single ship to provide air defence, anti-submarine and precision strike capabilities more effectively than current platforms.

-more at link-

https://wavellroom.com/2019/06/18/chinese-power-projection-arsenal-ships/

This author had listed over 30 examples and references about Chinese future “all-round warship” in the potential future. Also, if arsenal ship is a feasibility in today’s tech, then it’s also sidely addresses the existence of CEC datalink within Chinese new warships.

6th Roussen-class FACM for the Hellenic Navy Started Sea Trials

[...]
The vessel, with hull number P 78, was launched on 1 June 2018 at Elefsis Shipyard.

The story of the Hellenic Navy’s Super Vita is complex and spans across many years:

A contract for the construction of three modern missile boats was signed in January 2000. The construction took place at the Elefsis Shipyards, while Vosper Thornycroft (now BAE Systems Maritime) provided the design, logistical support and equipment for the ships. On August, 2003 and September, 2008 options that provided the acquisition of four more vessels were activated with the last ship to be commissioned in 2015...

quote:

France and Greece are actively working on a Government-to-Government agreement for the procurement of two Belharra / FDI frigates for the Hellenic Navy, Naval News learned from Naval Group.
...
The government to government talks consist in much more than the mere procurement of vessels. Naval News learned that what is being offered to Greece is a partnership in which the Hellenic Navy would effectively join the French FTI program
...
Naval Cruise Missile for Greece: A deciding factor
...
The introduction of NCM in the Hellenic Navy would provide it with increased deterrent and deep-strike capabilities, which seems of great interest to Greece. Therefore, the ships shall be regarded as a strategic asset in the Greek defense force structure.
...
In addition to FDI frigates, Naval Group is looking to supply its F21 heavyweight torpedo to the Hellenic Navy, which has a requirement to equip its fleet of four Type 214 and one Type 209 submarines. The need is for 36x 21-inch (533 mm) heavyweight torpedoes to replace the ageing SUT Mod0 and SST-4.

The German Navy announced yesterday the selection of the NH90 NFH maritime helicopter as the replacement for its ageing Lynx anti-submarine warfare helicopters.

According to a German Navy statement, this decision ensures a smooth transition and synergies in later operations.
