A development that might influence how scenarios are crafted in the near term:

kevinkins -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/19/2020 2:29:35 PM)

Only for completeness sake would this be added to the DB:

https://www.zerohedge.com/health/spain-authorizes-military-planes-spray-disinfectants-over-cities

Has there ever been a flight sim that includes fire fighting from the air?

Gen3ralAustria -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/20/2020 10:03:23 AM)

Could be interesting for the DB. Germany plans to buy 30 F/A-18F and 15 EA-18G alongside 90 new Eurofighters.
Found it on the New York Times page, reported by Reuters today.

I don't get why they are doing it after praising the Eurofighter as "non plus ultra" but they probably have their reasons.

CHM -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/20/2020 5:33:50 PM)

They need the F/A-18 to haul their nukes around

Gen3ralAustria -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/20/2020 9:34:41 PM)

Wait a second, their nukes? If I remember correctly, Germany is not having any nukes, but is part of the nuclear deterrance strategy of NATO (Nukleare Teilhabe - nuclear participation) -> US is (in case of "emergency") releasing the use of nuclear weapons, that will be carried to the target on german systems (mostly airborne).
We have 2020, the Cold War ended 1989/1990? Why is this still existing? EA-18Gs make at least some sense (most modern OECM platform), but 30 F/A-18Fs just for this old and today useless requirement?
And if my memory serves correct, neither F/A-18E nor F are at the moment cleared to carry and use B61 thermonuclear bombs (probably the one in "use" for this case, and that since the 1960s!). Honestly, if this is the reason for the planned purchased, it is quite a ****ty one. After praising and changing the specifications of the Eurofighter to fill some of the Tornados capabilities (which the F/A-18F can't all fulfill).

Broncepulido -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/21/2020 5:46:52 PM)

Simply explained here (and in any serious site):

TitaniumTrout -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/29/2020 3:51:00 PM)

I actually just encountered this in CMO where Fencer's squared off with HIND's at low altitude. The HIND's managed to really beat up the Fencers, a hell of a lot more than I expected. It's always cool to see the unexpected occur in a sim.

As I'm building a "Putins War" scenario in the Baltic's I'm cross referencing it, as best I can, and it seems to be quite accurate

Rebel Yell -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/30/2020 3:37:54 PM)

I would assume that since it's AESA it doesn't have to rotate.

kevinkins -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/30/2020 3:52:54 PM)

Thanks.

BeirutDude -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/30/2020 4:50:41 PM)

My understanding is the AEW aircraft have gotten beyond having to have a rotating sensor and not having moving parts = less maintenance and less prone to breakdown. I suspect you're giving up sensing forward and aft, with only broadside beams. the New Boeing 737 AEW aircraft have a similar configuration and Turkey is buying them. Seems like the E-2, E-3, A-50U breed of AEW aircraft are less in vogue for smaller powers. I personally suspect you won't see the USAF/USN, Russian Air Force or PLAAF totally go this route (but bet they pick up some) because it limits 360 degree surveillance, but if your threat axis is limited the fixed sensors are a way to go.

The FREMM has won the FFG(x) for the U.S. Navy

Good choice, its the one I wanted.

Me too. Happy to hear that. I think that's a good choice.

T Rav -> RE: Naval and Defense News (4/30/2020 11:11:05 PM)

Regarding the HIND/FENCER engagement and, showing my age a bit. It used to be whenever an A-10 shot down and F-15, the F-15 pilot had to buy the A-10 pilot's choice of beverage... Didn't happen often, but did happen.

This is interesting, IF TRUE One of the premises of "The Missiles of October, Part Deux, 2020" scenario was the introduction of S-400 and SS-26 Stone or “Iskander” missiles to Cuba, seems we COULD be half way there!
