Iran Just Fired Its Sidewinder Missile Clone From A Drone

Next to Mk.82 bombs on the Karrar UAV now an air-to-air missile has been attached..
How the aiming would be quite a challenge, but in the end it could be dangerous to helicopters and larger UAV's maybe?

Blast33 -> And some more Iranian Ideas (1/7/2021 7:39:41 AM)

Somthing like a US Perdix drone, Helicopter launched and a new unnamed model (again..) with some hooks / landing gear and a Harop like drone.

Ideas plenty, now must see what will become reality..

DWReese -> RE: Naval & Defence News (1/8/2021 4:39:26 PM)

PHILIPPINES and CURRENT US Military assigned there......

Exactly what US (or foreign) forces are stationed in the Philippines at this time? There has been much talk about their Agreement ending, and then there is later data indicates that the decision to terminate the Agreement being placed on hold.

There has been talk about 5 bases being operated by US forces, but then it would appear that those 5 bases are actual Philippine bases that the US (or other nations) merely have ACCESS to. Clark and Subic Bay appear to no longer appear to be bases that the US operates out of.

There are reports that there are only a total of 140 US Military personnel currently assigned to the Philippines, yet it appears that units (air squadrons and ships) are free to come and go as they desire.

I have read lots of web reports lately, but I can't see ANY US forces assigned, or even temporarily assigned, to the Philippines.

So, does anyone know what the real story is, or can they point me to a site that explains the current state?

Thanks in advance.

kevinkins -> RE: Naval & Defence News (1/9/2021 1:56:45 PM)

Maybe folks have seen this already. But it's fairly recent about the Philippines:

https://www.rand.org/blog/2020/12/the-philippines-is-sticking-right-by-americas-side.html

However, it does not mention exact US forces there so not helpful in that regard.

China apparently hit a moving ship target in the South China Sea with a missile fired from Qinghai province, roughly 2300km away. Chinese military fired a Dongfeng-26B (#DF26B) missile with a range of about 4,000 kilometers targeting an old, unmanned merchant ship that was self-navigating.

This would be the equivalent of the U.S. hitting a moving ship target off the tip of Florida with a missile fired from Kansas.

The target was apparently hit near-simultaneously with a 2nd missile fired from just over 1500km away in Zhejiang Province.
This would be roughly like hitting that same target off of Florida near-simultaneously with a missile fired from Delaware.

Blast33 -> US Navy tests hunting subs with an aerial drone (1/19/2021 8:05:56 AM)

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Navy and General Atomics in November used sonobuoys dropped from an MQ-9A Block V Reaper to track a simulated submarine target on a U.S. Navy Pacific test range, in what GA says is the first time an aerial drone has deployed a self-contained anti-submarine warfare system.

The Reaper deployed a mix of 10 sonobuoys – deployed to measure water conditions and monitor for targets – then received and transmitted the data in real time to a monitoring station at Laguna Flight Operations Facility located at Yuma Proving Grounds in California.

The test was part of the development of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian drone, which is part of a research and development project in conjunction with the Navy’s Naval Air Systems Command. If the Navy can make this concept of operations work, it has the potential to significantly lower the cost of submarine hunting and free up larger, more expensive manned sub-hunting platforms such as the P-8A Poseidon, to act as a command-and-control platform.

The Reaper managed to acquire and track an expendable anti-submarine warfare training target for three hours using General Dynamics UYS-505 acoustic processing software.

Blast33 -> Thales NS50 4D radar (1/20/2021 5:48:15 PM)

The navies of Belgium and the Netherlands rely on Thales, Naval Group and KERSHIP shipyard to equip the 12 next generation Mine Counter Measures Vessels with NS50 radars for Air & Surface Surveillance with Fire Control capabilities.

Thales press release

The NS50 provides for the first time a complete and superior level of self-protection capability against air and surface threats for this category of high value MCM vessels. A strategic choice for small to medium vessels, the NS50 offers dual functions between air and surface surveillance and fire control.

The NS50 is the world’s most compact, affordable 4D multi-function naval radar in the market. It offers superior air and surface detection, tracking and classification performances providing highly accurate 4D target information required for rapid acquisition by short-range “fire and forget” Surface-to-Air-Missile Systems as well as fire control of ship-borne artillery against surface targets. It can defend against Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), low slow flying object, surface targets and in combination with small to medium caliber gun system.

A fully software-defined sensor, the NS50 features a modular and scalable hardware architecture, making it equally suitable for combat boats, Offshore Patrol Vessels, MCMVs, auxiliaries and various other platforms. No other radar in this class up offers the NS50’s flexibility and range of features, which are similar to those that do equip larger sized ships. Its full digital design implies that upgrades are possible at any moment and at any place and that, software modifications are simple for integrating new features. The NS50 meets today’s cybersecurity requirements.

The NS50 is part of the NS family of radars already operational within the Royal Netherlands Navy, providing enhanced situational awareness and contributing to regional stability in various parts of the world.

Unfortunately this has been occurring for decades at this point. When I was in my Military History MA program 10 years ago this was a hot topic.

A lot of academics in other history sub-disciplines dislike military historians because their classes tend to be more popular among elective seekers. Just look in the article, a guy wanted to take a ACW course but his only option was humans and pets.

Other academics also tend to realize that some of the most renowned military historians and many of in the field are pacifists whose belief is that to avoid war you must teach it in all its grittiness.

Long time ago now but as an engineering major I took an elective in "American Military History" (I was also Army ROTC and always interested in history). It was taught by D. Clayton James who wrote a nice biography of MacArther and was the technical advisor to the movie MacArthur (Gregory Peck). What a great course. Lots of terrific in class discussion.

kevinkins -> RE: Re: Naval and Defence News (2/2/2021 1:54:32 PM)

Our local community college has a course in WW2 history online and in class that was excellent as there were just papers to write. The professor was a retired Army officer that became a history teacher after service. He has a "center" that sponsors a WW2 lecture series around NJ. WW2 sparks the most interest since folks have parents and grandparents who participated. The rest of military get little coverage academically.

Poland's armed forces conducted a simulation of an attack on the country from the east.

Polish defences were supposed to hold out for 22 days, but in fact "the war was lost within five days and the Polish army ceased to exist", according to media leaks.

In turn, the Ministry of National Defense replied: "We would like to inform you that the Winter exercise itself, its course and conclusions constitute classified information. Any answer to your question - negative or negative is therefore impossible".
