China Building a 3rd Type 901 Large Replenishment Oiler for PLAN

quote:

Our partner East Pendulum is reporting that a 3rd Type 901 replenishment oiler has been spotted (via satellite imagery) at the Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI), Guangdong province in southern China.
The imagery shows the vessel already at an advanced stage of construction with most of the hull already assembled and the forward block ready to be connected to the rest of the hull. This is the third Type 901, a 240 meters long, 48,000 tons replenishment oiler design to support the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) future carrier strike groups (CSG).

The first one, named "Hulun Lake" (or Hulunhun in Chinese, with hull number 965) was commissioned in September last year.

A second Type 901 was launched last summer at the same shipyard (its construction started in late 2016 according to satellite images.

The Belgian government (Council of Ministers, following a proposal from Defense Minister Vandeput) agreed today to launch a public procurement procedure for the replacement and initial support of the Belgian Navy (Marinecomponent/Composante) and the Royal Netherlands Navy (Koninklijke Marine) fleets of mine countermeasure vessels (MCMV).

As far as the Belgian Navy is concerned, six MCMV with related equipment (MCM Toolboxes, USVs, UUVs...), support equipment and initial support will be procured to replace the six existing Tripartite-class MCMV. Six similar, new generation vessels, will also be procured for the Royal Netherlands Navy (to replace its six remaining Tripartite-class MCMV as well). According to a Belgian government press release, other European partners can join this project as a result of this public contract. The vessels and "MCM toolboxes" are expected to be delivered between 2021 and 2030.

A minor correction here: It is not hun but hu (湖 in Mandarin). So either Hulun Hu (name and then lake) or Hulunhu are correct.

Update on the Black Sea:

"For NATO, the writing is on the wall – it needs to increase its ASW capabilities fast in order to deter the Russian submarine threat. As part of the European Reassurance Initiative (ERI), U.S. P-8 Poseidon aircraft have begun patrolling over the Black Sea in order to track these submarines and gather intelligence. Nevertheless, the presence of Russian fighter aircraft as well as sophisticated air defense systems in and around Crimea makes the P-8s vulnerable to interception and/or interference (România Liberă, September 9, 2017). Clearly, besides a stronger NATO presence in the region, there needs to be an overall increase in regional ASW capabilities."

The Black Sea would be a very tough nut to crack above the surface.

The Type-072III Yuting-II-class landing ship Haiyang Shan (936) has recently being spotted carrying a big gun mount for testing.

Rumors are ripe that this might be China's naval railgun being tested.

Whatever it is, it is clearly for test, judging both the containers on the deck and the guaranteed deck-penetration, which would inhibit the frontal ramp.

The Yu-11 (?) or CY-X cruise missile carried light weight ASW torpedo.

It is launched from the same canister as the YJ-83 AShM and the recent image of the launching button of the fire-control panel onboard a Type 056A Jiangdao Corvette confirms that the ship has the capability to carry and launch those missiles.
No information about its range, but I think the plus point over traditional ASROC would be its longer range, mid-course guidance and low trajectory.

India to develop new long-range variant of BRAHMOS missile

quote:

The BrahMos Aerospace company will develop a new variant of the BRAHMOS missile with a range of up to 800 km, according to the Hindustan Times newspaper. In February 2017, S. Cristopher, Director of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DROD) told Indian media that the range of the BRAHMOS missile would be extended to 450 km and then to 800 km. The variants of the extended range BRAHMOS variants would be available for ground-, sea- and air-based platforms, he added. The official pointed out that the modification of the missile with a range of 800 km would be developed within next two years. However, the development schedule seems to have been shrunk. As a result, in March 2017, India successfully tested the BRAHMOS-ER (Extended Range) missile that had a range of 400 km. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the missile is now being reconfigured in order to achieve the goal, namely, to increase its range to 800 km.

Design of New Russian Maritime Patrol Aircraft Nearing Completion

quote:

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) continues fulfilling the contract with the Russian Defense Ministry to upgrade antisubmarine warfare Il-38 aircraft. They are operational in the Russian naval aviation. The Ilyushin Company is extending the life cycle of remaining aircraft and equipping them with modern onboard complexes. The aircraft are engaged both in defense and rescue operations. In the meantime, the Russian Navy plans to order a new-generation antisubmarine patrol aircraft. Its design for the naval aviation is nearing completion, the UAC said.

Expert Vladimir Karnozov said Il-114 will be a proper replacement for the Il-38 family which is still operational in the Russian armed forces. "Naval patrol Il-114 can be equipped with Novella which does not demand major retraining of pilots and technicians. Its flight and technical characteristics which are close and sometimes superior to those of Il-38 allow engaging new tactical means of searching and destroying adversary submarines accumulated by Il-38N crews," he said.

Henri K.'s writeup about the Chinese "Super Cannon", as he calls it.

Indeed reflects the recent speculation that this isnt actually exactly a Railgun, but a Coilgun judging from its round barrel. Remains to be seen, tho.
A Coilgun would be more complicated to build and would need more energy than a Railgun, but it would solve the armature ablation issue since it would have a conventional smoothbore barrel between the electromagnetic coils and the saboted projectile. Another plus would be that the diameter of the rounds can be bigger and, with enough energy, the velocities attained even greater than that of a railgun.

In any case, Henri K. is pretty sure that this is an Electromagnetic Gun of some sort and not a siege mortar, large caliber conventional gun or ETC gun etc.

Coilgun is a very expensive option, but ironically it didn't suffer from budget constriction.

If so, that could explain why it needs a barrel crane in front of a turret.

Hongjian -> RE: Canadian Resolve-class oiler ‘Asterix’ hits the water (2/2/2018 2:35:20 PM)

Well, it seems like the Coilgun people could be wrong. We can now see the barrel. It's rectangular - as expected of a Railgun.
And first rumors about the performance: 36 Megajoule, 3km/s muzzle velocity (Mach 8+)

Railgun, coilgun, or whatever delivery mechanism is, here is a widely commented article from Ars. You can see how general audiences response to this:

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/02/photos-show-china-preparing-to-test-naval-railgun/

Hongjian -> RE: Canadian Resolve-class oiler ‘Asterix’ hits the water (2/3/2018 4:52:21 AM)

Yeah, understandable that it is hard for them to believe that now has taken the next step in railgun deployment.
Actually, the reliable PLAN insider who commented on these photos says that this railgun isnt a prototype anymore, but already the finalized design, including the enclosed turret. This sea-based test was the result of years long land-based tests and the test goal here is less the testing of the railgun itself, but the stabilization and turret and fire controls. During the land-based tests, all critical systems related with the gun itself were already successfully tested.

This is both good and (sorta) bad news for me, since I hoped that they would go with a stealthier, AGS-styled turret option.
