The final clash- clash of the titans

After the very heavy but ineffective air attacks by the Empire, Mike in is usual style saw an advantage and decided to shift focus onto the HIs as opposed to Korea.

Both fleets had been dancing around each other over the last two months with the Allies occasionally bombarding a major Japanese port.

I saw a major spike in detection levels at Nagasaki and assumed that was Mike's next target. The remaining IJN was committed on the assessment that damaging his BBs was now a more critical priority than going after his transports. The allied BB bombardments had become deadly

The number of naval clashes and ships involved during the turn was crazy.

Initially the IJN did well but was slowly overwhelmed.

And then of course disaster.

This task force was involved in several earlier clashes and thus it was lacking main gun ammo.

A sole IJN DD survived this engagement.

But we finished strongly against a number of crippled allied warships floating around Nagasaki.

Total casualties for the day:

Confirmed sunk:

Allied: 5 x BBs (all older types), 4 x CAs ( not sure about the smaller vessels but alot)

IJN: 4 x BBs (including Mushashi) 6 x DDs


300 A/C each

There were significant air attacks on an invasion amphib taskforce assaulting one of the islands just west of Nagasaki.

Probably one of the biggest turns I have ever played.[:D]

Those are fun, and looks like in the VPs you cam out on top!! Plus, even damaging BBs at this point takes them out of the war completely. Nice work!

Yep its murderous the flak in this mod (as it was in real life!) thus attacking fleet CVs even when you can get pas the CAP is usually a waste of time.

I believe it does with reference to a high defense pilot skill.

After reviewing combat reports again I believe he had around 500 on CAP with a mixture of land base + CV support.

Approx 2500 IJN/IJA took part and of course the sweeps arrived after the strike packages and the land based strikes were very uncoordinated. The navy strikes from KB went in well but as stated flak really ripped it apart.

The kamikazes which are usually pretty good for me were very disappointing on this occasion.

Over 1000 a/c and pilots did not return versus 150 allied fighters downed.

Thanks Obvert, my initial reaction was quite positive as I get excited at sinking anything now that it is well into 45. [:)]

However it is safe to say, that may well have been the last charge of the IJN with now just 3 BBs left after losing 4 in a day. It could have been a massive victory but his death dealing taskforce full of fast BBs collided with my major taskforce with no ammo right at the worst time.[X(]

Mike is a bit distraught at seeing the combat report but once he studies it a bit more, the loss of 5 old BBs and damage to 2 others for putting the IJN to sleep may well be a price worth paying. I think it depends on the amount of damage on the other allied BBs involved in the combat and the damage they sustained.

It is great to still have fun into 45.

You still can do a lot with 3 battleships, plus the cruisers....don't write of the IJN yet![:)]

Just read through the CR. Lots of good action that turn!

Your strikes did well against the amphibs too, but man, flak looks killer at that point.

Like seeing your dispositions in Korea too. Your troops do look to have some good odds in dug-in positions as long as they have supply.

With those kinds of battles and the losses he'll still have to take to get you booted out of strong positions on land, you could last longer than your current estimates. Any day you get close to 1:1 with lots of points exchanged is a huge win! [:)]

I do not have a copy of the game with me to look up point values ... but I think the IJ got better than 1:1 which in turn means more difficulty for the Allies to achieve 2:1 ..

An interesting aspect of the IJ strategy is that the total number of points possible to limited and the ability to achieve 2:1 becomes exponentially more difficult the more points the IJ accumulate.
The strategy of accumulating points by trashing the "Bear" might just work out .. at the very least show that the IJ have a possible way to win besides SCLS [8D]

The following day a number of crippled Allied ships were finished off floating around the recent fighting. Midget subs did particularly well and my kamikazes couldn't miss this time.

I am pretty sure another 6 x APAs and a couple of destroyers were sent to the bottom.

Of course I have just written a long post and it has been gobbled up in cyber space.[:@]

Anyway to briefly repeat my previous effort, in summary I am in trouble again. Mike took all of one day to recover before he was back at my throat.

Mike has unleashed CL and Fletcher task forces which have obliterated my mosquito fleet around Nagasaki. Something like 40 x SCs, 10 x Es and 4 DDs were sunk for a couple of allied DDs and a heavy cruiser (Chicago 1 and 2 are now sunk so he will have to commission a third!) Allied losses were caused by mines and my beloved CD guns.

Good play by Mike as he has now cleared the coast line around Nagasaki for his remaining BBs to go to work. The remnants of the IJN are still licking their wounds and won't really be operational for another week.


The Allies have also made some very smart moves in Korea which I will expand on later.

In short, nothing but pain here for the Empire. [8|]

thanks Dave, I have really enjoyed taking on the Bear and I am sure from a VP perspective I would have come out on top. Aside from the ground losses the Soviets did lose thousands of aircraft as well as Mike fought very aggressively.

Interestingly, the Russians aren't that much of a factor anymore as US and Commonwealth forces pour into Korea and create havoc. Soviet forces are still largely held up by good defensive terrain near the border.

Supply is now a big issue in Korea.

Korea is like Malaysia when you lose control of the Yellow sea ... amphib landings behind your lines create havoc.

Yep he is behind my lines now. I can't stop his armour and 4E bombers in the open terrain. It was a cunning move which neutralised my air and surface forces.

I will post a map soon highlighting my dilemma.

Still I managed to bring down about 50 4E bombers this turn as he hammered my main airfield at Fusan. Mike has to be running low on those damn B24Js now.

I have only used the Irving a few times as an kamikaze and I would have to say I have been underwhelmed by it. The last strike had decent pilots against damaged APAs and no CAP and yet the hit percentage was pretty ordinary.

My three strong favorites which continue to deliver half decent results are still the Nick C, Jill and Kate. The Nell has also been useful at times. The A6M2 Zero has been useless for me and all other fighter types have been required/needed to keep the Allies honest in the air.

Scoreboard moving into mid May 45

Still only showing a minor Allied victory which is encouraging. However there is nothing minor about the pounding each turn I am now receiving [8|]

Detection levels on potential targets are still my best indication of a massive air attack. Naval bombardments are a bit trickier to guess but they have slowed down of late due to Allied losses.

I am still pushing for 80K VPs but I can't see myself lasting much more than 2 or so months. Still great fun.

Industry/ Supplies

Have come down quite dramatically but I have enough or more for an additional 3 months brutal fighting.

Massive land forces now crowd Japan as half built divisions just keep on arriving as reinforcements.

Plenty of AA, arty and armour also present in the HIs.

And the main theatre at the moment- Korea

Mike has cleverly split me into two pockets by cutting through the clear terrain. This was very well played and I was slow at realising the danger- not that I could have done anything about it anyway. [:(]

Both pockets have fairly limited supply but there are still strong units in there and anchored in good defensive terrain, it will be a bitter and bloody fight to destroy them. The major defensive pocket is anchored around Keijo (which is now a beast of a defensive position) and extends into the North East.

They are all doomed but they will take plenty of Allied and Soviets with them which of course is the plan[:D]

That's my experience. I can't afford to convert any fighter groups ... I need them all to keep at least some of my bases intact.

Korea is lost now, you need to simply think about saving as much there as you can. 4E's based in Korea is worse than in Hokkaido, gonna get ugly. [sm=00000619.gif]
