Northern Japan

The Ruskies are largely stuck here. The USN has withdrawn to support operations in Southern Japan so there have not been any further assaults. I am pretty happy how the defences have held up against vastly superior Soviet Mech units.

Aircraft pools

The FrankR continues to be a Godsend and there are a stck of Oscars. The lack of A6M8s and D4Y3s is causing a problem because I didn't build enough Ha 33 engines!!!!

A couple of Sam units have performed okay but there is not enough of them to make a difference.

Economically starting to feel the pinch here.

I suspect I can handle one more month of severe fighting but the intensity and supply consumption is off the charts.

Actually it is pretty amazing how well the economy has handled all of the fighting in 45 with no oil.

Last turn's Soviet mechanised assault on Sapporo

The usual carnage.

Aug 6th, 1945

After severe fighting in Southern Japan, Mike cleverly changed direction and sent a massive taskforce to reinforce his beach head just outside Osaka.

Unfortunately for Mike this was exactly the hex I was expecting him to head to , though I had been waiting patiently for a number of weeks.

Despite significant support from his fleet carriers, I managed to smash through his CAP and cause havoc. I had the ranges correct this time for my land based air and KB which allowed a 1000 odd aircraft to focus on his CVEs and amphibs and ignore his CVs.

My pilot quality has obviously deteriorated alot and his cap certainly took his toll but over 40 allied ships were hit resulting in 10 CVEs sunk and multiple smaller ships. Coordination was excellent as his task forces were parked right next door to some of the largest airfields in Japan who had massive air support.

I suspect Mike thought after losing 55K of aircraft that the empire was just about finished and supply was exhausted which is not an incorrect assumption, but there is still some fight left.[:D]

Lowpe -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/6/2016 11:35:40 PM)

How did you get the timing so correct?

Where your strike planes at the runways for all this time? Or did you fly them in the day before?

Really, nicely done![&o]

A lot of JFB's look for range in their late war planes, but it is these 1 strike attacks that can really do the damage.

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/6/2016 11:37:19 PM)

The date should have been 8th Aug...

Combat report attached for those interested. [:)]

After the first few it didn't look good, but the big strikes go through. Great work! [&o]

Thanks Lowpe, patience was the key here. Mike follows a pattern which I have finally come to understand quite well over the last couple of years. I knew sooner or later he would head back to that hex, so I just waited.

You are correct in that I cycled attack sqns around the three large airfields to ensure there wasn't any noticeable buildup. Of course there was luck involved here as well. The battering I am copping around Southern Japan forced a number of very good fighter sentais to regroup around Osaka and of course they were there and ready when the party started.

Correct- I have always experienced more success with air strikes set at short distances then longer range. Perhaps detection times are reduced and the effectiveness of CAP is also impacted by closer airstrikes- I could be completely wrong here.

Thanks Obvert, you are quite correct with those first strikes which I intially thought were going nowhere.

The key was KB's strikes, so it once again proves that it is still handy to have it in some shape or form even in 45. [:)]

I doubt I would have broken the CAP without its contribution.

Latest Int screen

Between the pair of us we must be close to setting records for sheer carnage [:)]

From my perspective it doesn't feel like a minor victory for the Allies but rather the entire extermination of the empire! [X(]

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/8/2016 12:21:15 PM)

Of course in the great tradition of AAR reporting we only record victories and not defeats [:D]

With this tradition in mind, behold a rare land victory.

As the Allies commence spreading out across Japan, these two US infantry units stumbled onto a hornet's nest and I wasn't about to let them get away cheaply. After a few BB bombardments and deliberate attacks (yes I still have two left that I managed to patch up and keep operational) I moved in for the kill before their friends could reinforce.

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/8/2016 12:23:28 PM)

Yep, I got those two which is a rare victory amidst the slaughter.

I still have some very strong positions around Kobe and Osaka and a general counter offensive will commence soon before I run out of supplies. Keen to bleed him some more.

He might soon. Just about the time the 8th flies in for some more fun after obliterating the Germans. How do you like B-17Gs? [:D]

Lowpe -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/8/2016 5:15:59 PM)

My thoughts...B17 are endless now.

Sangeli -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/8/2016 5:47:22 PM)

That's a ridiculous number of 4E losses! Curious what percentage of B-24Js have been lost. Looks like at least half and probably more. Too bad he gets like 100 B-17Gs a month now.

Surprised strategic losses aren't higher. Has Wargmr even tried to go after your industry?

I am guessing the answer will be not much [:)]

Despite the 25K difference in VPs, I am not sure how far I will stagger into Sep 45 before I collapse so maybe they won't be such a problem after all.

He has has but only half halfheartedly. A few big day light strikes which yielded disappointing results for the losses sustained.

Three main reasons I see why Mike has not gone harder here:

1. His 4es have been employed very effectively in the ground support role since almost day 1. Flying between 5,000 to 8,000 ft they have on countless occasions destroyed or badly disrupted strong positions across the entirety of his advance. They were brutally employed in his advance through the PIs and especially China. Because of their constant use and losses I suspect it has been hard to build and maintain a reserve to really go after industry.

2. Japanese air defence both night and day has been very strong across the entire HI. It is now Aug 45 and it is finally breaking down over Southern Japan.

3. Mike is a very aggressive player and he doesn't enjoy sitting back and bombing something into rubble. To his credit he loves to embrace a challenge and would rather assault and seize a position than sit back. Obviously there are risks in the strategy and at times he can sustain very heavy losses or he goes straight through my defences like tissue paper.

A fantastic player which ensures an action packed and fast game.

Sangeli -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/8/2016 10:27:50 PM)

I'm surprised your air defenses have held out that long. I just don't see how any Japanese CAP can deal with concentrated P-47 sweeps. In my current match I have yet to see the Japanese even try to stop P-47s for more than a single turn. I'm looking forward to the day when Japanese fighters are forced to defend the HI industry against my Thunderbolts [:D]

I have learnt through quite a few games to counter P47 sweeps to at least an acceptable 3:1 loss ratio in the Allies favour (not including the P47N). Tojo, Frank and George set at high altitudes with plenty of radars and range settings of 0 or 1. The cannonfodder (oscars and zeros) operating at lower altitude as effectively as bait. The critical factor is sheer numbers. You can gradually overwhelm the sweeps, especially if they come in piecemeal. [:)]

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/9/2016 12:24:23 AM)

The last big offensive [:)]

With strat bombing occurring throughout Southern Japan and stockpiles of supplies falling at a rapid rate, the Emperor has declared a nationwide Banzai charge at all Allied forces in the homeland.

Phase 1 has commenced and I suspect Mike will have a turn or two of panic before the offensive collapses under a hail of bombs and armour.

Still I am still scoring points, and I am getting close now to my 90K VP dream total.

Not to mention the 100's that he gets with all the new air groups ... B17G's really are unlimited at this point ... you have to kill +50/day to put even a dent into them ... and 50/day requires you to own the skies ... with the almost unlimited Stangs that are also now available, how would one do that exactly? LOL, well that crushes that dream as clearly I'm not going to based on those figures [:)]

Lowpe -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/9/2016 3:07:51 AM)

Allies planes are pretty much limitless when you get this late.

The carrier bombers are really deep...and almost everything else is pretty darn hefty too.

Have you run into any of the British funnies...the super heavy one bomb planes?

What other late war plane have your run into that was memorable?

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/9/2016 3:13:33 AM)

D + 2 on the great and final offensive.

The Allied centre holds and now sensing the danger they commence to pull back.

A surprising development was the collapse of a commonwealth battlegroup with US armoured elements. This leaves quite a few Allied units exposed and potentially cut off if I push to the coast. Two factors give me pause for thought before I commence the exploit of the break through:

1. Allied BBs poised to unleash hell once I reach that coast line and
2. Allied air power.

Still as hoped for, some short term worries for Mike[:)]

njp72 -> RE: Empire strikes back- NJP vs Wargmr (no wargmr) (7/9/2016 3:16:53 AM)

Surprisingly how easy these Commonwealth units just collapsed especially considering the tenacious defence the Allies are putting up in the centre. Terrain played a big part and some still appeared to be in move mode. They didn't expect a flank counterattack [;)]
