[ridiculous! for some reason, the Forum software is censoring this screenshot. now you see it, now you don't!]

Great, looks impresive but a little question, what represent the red/yellow stars/crosses in the images???

The turn has just switched from night (dawn) to day. Those are 2D gun flashes. Shouldn't be there. Will be fixed.

Apart from the de facto AAR that this has developed into, I am doing this play through (a) for my own amusement (haven't actually played the game in over a month <cough cough>, been coding instead!), (b) to note remaining bugs and things to-do (see above), and (c) to demo to the player community that we have an actual game here. Coming soon!

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (3/21/2015 7:12:15 PM)

[trying again...]

A slugfest!

Those remaining Jordanian Objective hexes will be tough nuts to crack! If the Israelis can get there in time. Maybe just go for unit kills?

Time -- and forces! -- are running out. Victory seems unlikely.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (3/21/2015 7:20:37 PM)

The Israelis were inching close to a Minor Victory on kills, then ... a Jordanian counter-assault took back the Latrun Village 50-point objective hex!

There aren't enough Israelis on hand to retake the village. With so much Jordanian firepower in the vicinity, it's not worth the sacrifice.

This will end in a draw for sure.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (3/21/2015 9:06:48 PM)

And so it ends, in a Draw as predicted.

[image]local://upfiles/5869/A7BFCA4F1AB745229CACE14A0E69DF2D.jpg[/image]

A really hard fight. In RL, we might suppose that the Israelis are now positioned to besiege and starve out the Jordanian stronghold around Latrun. But maybe not, because they failed to take Deir Ayub, thus leaving them open to Jordanian counterattack from the northeast, or perhaps the south.

A useful exercise. Along the way, I've noted several things that need fixing, or tweaking.

Back to coding!

Hexagon -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (3/22/2015 11:48:11 AM)

Thanks for the info, i see... well, when i see the red/yellow thing i think first in a feature to show the units that fire over enemy or were shoted by enemy (maybe from the bug is possible release a feature and you dont need use the used points thing).

I find fun the unknow infantry NATO icon... looks like a cactus [:D]

To whet your appetites still more, here's a screenshot from another test game, Formalities in Suez (24 October, 1973), As_Suez_1973.scn:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/A5D02CD086CB436BAA66ADFDFCE03D54.jpg[/image]

I don't know if this will turn into another de facto AAR. We'll see what develops...

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/3/2015 5:26:15 PM)

Same scenario, same situation, 2D Extreme Zoom-Out View (hot key 7):

[image]local://upfiles/5869/DD78FC95ACE54FA49362FE4E8C51F5E7.jpg[/image]

You will note that in Extreme Zoom-Out view, we no longer display unit info or unit icons on-counter; it's blank counters only. Extreme Zoom-Out view (both 2D & 3D) are intended for battle planning, not for actual game play. But you can move and fight exclusively in Extreme Zoom-Out mode if you really want to!

(The sharp-eyed among you will note a graphics glitch here and there, also the Opaque White "Hvy Pontoon (9)" labels in the map southeast. Like the rest of the labels, those two labels really should be Transparent Enhanced. It's a bug! Hence the playthroughs -- for both business and pleasure.)

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/3/2015 6:00:51 PM)

Uh oh. In 2D Zoom-Out view (hot key 6), unexpected guests from the northeast (circled in magenta):

[image]local://upfiles/5869/AB010C4C3D3A4FC882A9265D84F87E59.jpg[/image]

(Do you detect a trend here? Do you begin to see where I very much like the new 2D views, and prefer to play the game that way?)

From the scenario briefing:

quote:

Behind the EgyptianThird Army, the city of Suez was thought to contain the supplies for the army. The Israeli's, having encircled the city from the west, after crossing the canal and penetrating south from Deservoir, created a task group based on tanks from Karen's 217th Brigade and Yoffe's Parachute Battalion to capture the city before the 7:00 AM ceasefire deadline. As Egyptian forces had been exiting the city and surrendering, Zakem and his tanks thought the mission would be a formality.

This was supposed to be a "formality", a mopping-up operation. I guess not! [X(]

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/3/2015 7:13:56 PM)

I think I can manage my flanks:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/AB6E2D051F434E5FB13ECB05AFFC3403.jpg[/image]

Must. Press. On to. Objectives at. Suq el Nimsa.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/3/2015 10:21:52 PM)

Hey, this was supposed to be a walk in the park. Seems not:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/05FFF408BB514EFB84CEA3FF026DB584.jpg[/image]

HQ's got some splainin' to do.

Where's the IAF? They're a no-show in this scenario.

This is beginning to look like another draw.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 2:36:52 AM)

For you 3D guys, the situation around Suq el Nimsa:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/27A83F6965624C0A8AE82847ECFF78F1.jpg[/image]

The Israelis are taking heavy losses. This is becoming more trouble than it's worth.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 2:14:19 PM)

I'm almost ashamed to show this:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/4C3FD2EE343C4A23AEEC1712952F0163.jpg[/image]

With the scenario only about half finished, I'm near Major Defeat. Against the A/I!

The last turn was particularly brutal, disastrous even. The Israelis are getting clobbered!

If you are wondering why, with so many Side B Egyptian SP Losses, the Side B Point Loss is so low -- it's because some of those losses are Civilians (on the map, "CIV"), hence killing them "earns" me negative points. Hard to ignore the Civilians, hard not to kill them, because in addition to getting in the way, they are belligerents, they take and occupy Objectives, they fight!

In Real Life, the Israelis expected an easy time of it. Just like the RL Israelis, I was too cocky, and plunged straight ahead.

There is no way I can expect to take those two 100-pt Objective hexes.

My right flank is in shambles. Nothing accomplished with little to show for my losses there.

I'll be fortunate to extricate myself with my force half intact.

Maybe if I pull back to As Suways, maybe if I attend to my flanks, maybe if I go for some easier kills (but not Civilians!) -- maybe I can salvage at least a Draw from this mess. Maybe. [X(]

Hexagon -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 2:17:40 PM)

Looks great, cant wait to see more info/pics.

Now urban looks more... clear with the new 2D extra zoom level but i am curious about if is possible mod it using Jison work... maybe i can try test it in Campaigns if i find where are the 2D files... and i find time to do it [8|]

Ummm if i am not wrong we are on april no??? may is coming!!! but well, who cares about "ice" in desert??? [:D]

VegasOZ -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 6:25:43 PM)

Is this Modern Wars Middle East MOD game available to download? I am not able to find any Link for it. Is this project still in development?

Jason Petho -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 6:56:06 PM)

The Middle East project is still in development and will be released as a stand alone game. Vietnam will follow.

Things are looking somewhat better:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/BC19457151BE44C4B17869119BF3742F.jpg[/image]

Compare the Side B losses -- 73 before vs. 111 now -- at the cost of just 5 more Israeli losses -- 59 before vs. 64 now. (Again, those darned Civilians, with their negative kill values!) If this keeps up, maybe I can salvage a Draw from this after all.

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/4/2015 11:02:41 PM)

Wow! Turning the tables now:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/29B9177CB16B44D988B5F7AF86EA37D9.jpg[/image]

In just a single turn, Egyptian SP Losses jump from 111 to 143 at the cost of just a single Israeli SP.

Is a Minor Victory still possible?

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/5/2015 4:28:35 PM)

Going for the victory:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/0B5F9BEA24D14C9798E2D3FB04BC7E40.jpg[/image]

By now, many of the Egyptian units are Disrupted, their firing much less effective.

Maybe I can take that one highlighted Objective hex!

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/5/2015 4:53:35 PM)

Spoiler Alert!

Fortune favors the bold:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/5CFDE031135A43EFA0C31D6AE67D0E89.jpg[/image]

A single understrength (1 SP) Magah 5 armored platoon did an end run around the Egyptian left, and -- surprise, surprise! -- ran into and successfully assaulted oil depots (?) in the three consecutive hexes highlighted.

The screenshot shows the situation still in Israeli mid-turn. I will call up reinforcements. The outflanking of the Egyptian left will continue.

See how the Side B (Egyptian) Point Loss has jumped! See how, even without taking any more Objective hexes, the Total Points have skyrocketed, putting us well within the margin of Major Victory!

Who would've thunk it? [X(]

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/5/2015 5:28:21 PM)

At the end of Israeli turn 10 (out of 14), the encirclement of Suq el Nimsa is nearly complete:

[image]local://upfiles/5869/9E9751D310224DDCA25E8A01A0FAB09E.jpg[/image]

berto -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/5/2015 6:02:59 PM)

This scenario is a recreation of the Battle of Suez. In RL, on the eve of the Yom Kippur War ending cease fire, the Israelis would likely stop at this point, hunker down, dig in, bide their time. What's the use of destroying the Egyptian forces encircled at Suq el Nimsa? They're more valuable as a bargaining chip, or a heap of chips. The whole world was watching. Beating up on the already defeated Arabs would have been politically unwise. Why humiliate them even further, why rub defeat in their faces?

I am undecided if I will continue playing this scenario all the way through to the end. Probably not. I've already won my Major Victory. And how unexpected it is! [:)]

Warhorse -> RE: Any news on the Modern Wars Middle East Game.. (4/5/2015 11:59:18 PM)

Here is another screenshot, of a battle I'm playing. Berto likes the 2d mode, as I do, he's showed a lot of shots with the 2d, with the Military Symbols view, I am going to showcase the biggest undertaking, the Graphical Icon mode, which before now, quite frankly sucked! I was a dyed-in-the-wool 3d only view for most of a game, with only using 2d to get the big picture, but now, since we redid the whole 2d thing, no more mostly 2d, and Graphical Mode at that!! This is the beginning of a scenario called Mailed Fist, gonna show a few shots during battle, to show off some of the new pictures, hope ya like!

Israelis come under fire, by Recoilless and machineguns.
