I think I broke the back of it during my Italian landings. After that the LW has been more of a nuisance rather then a threat. The best tool for this are the P47s. Here is a screen of the 9th working over the Ruhr.

Turn 44. April 1944
______________________________________________________________________________

Still waiting for better weather. Last turn in April now.

------------------------
Europe
------------------------

The 8th shift target away from the Ruhr and hits deeper into Germany. Bomber Command and the 15th hit Ruhr but I have to divert them both for a day each to help with the instant repairing V-Weapons. -2 this turn.

The attack yesterday cost me another 2 VPs and a chance for a 3rd time in this game to have a positive VP turn. Ah well...

Oddly enough Pelton pulled back. There is absolutely no reason for him to do so. I smell a trap...luckily I have most of the US 5th Army sitting around doing nothing. Moving them from Sicily to Italy in case Pelton tries something funny.

Speaking of funny...since Pelton moved back a couple of hexes I for some reason got automatic control over a lot of hexes in Italy. Although not connected to my army in any way. [8|] And some Engineers apparently on their own initiative commandeered a couple of boats and decided it was a good idea to start repairing the rails in advance of our army who is just 2-3 weeks away from the area...

18.1.2. Effect of Italian Surrender
...
In the Allied logistics phase on the turn the Italians
surrender, as well as every turn after that in which the
below conditions are met, there is a chance that some
hexes in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica will change to Allied
control. Hexes with coordinates X>151 and Y>253 or
hexes that are part of Corsica or Sardinia may change.
German units in Italy or Corsica can prevent the
switchover. All German units prevent a change in any
hex that is within a number of hexes of the unit equal
to 1+(unit CV/2). So a German unit with a CV of 9 would
prevent a switchover in any hex within 5 hexes of the
unit. Any hex that is not within range of a German unit
has a 50 percent chance of switching to Allied control.

Consider them self-liberating Italians...

Your construction units attached to HQs will automatically dispatch to repair within the command range of the HQ - including across water.
If you want to keep a tighter 'focus' on their automatic deployment attach them to a lower level HQ with a shorter command range.

Here you can see the kills by the P47s flying over the Ruhr. They alone have accounted for around 27% of the total German Air to Air losses. Not bad at all. [:)]

If you over-garrison, the Germans get negative VPs. This may be an area to address if the WA need VP help, because in early 1944, in preparation for France invasion, Germans will be easily able to rack this up.

Joc, I have had the same experience with P-47s on sweeps over Germany. They are killers. They can basically clear the LW out of the Ruhr, which is about the max range of the D-15 model

I think Q-ball got it right but typed it wrong. [:)] By over-garrison (by the Germans) the WAs get negative VPs. And no its not a very intuitive VP system...but I shall not bring that up again [;)]

Turn 46. April 1944
______________________________________________________________________________

No update from T45 as motivation failed me. Nothing happened. Just the usual bombings over the Ruhr.

------------------------
Europe
------------------------

Weather still poor so no invasion. My "Mighty three" continue to roam at will over Germany. The 8th absolutely wrecked Hamburg and the surrounding area.

Despite the 9th and BC helping out with the V-Weapons last turn they repair instantly. -4 again. [8|] This turn I even sent the 15th for a day.

Pelton has disappeared. I continue to advance up Italy. No doubt this is a trap but I´ll keep walking. The 5th US Army are coming up from behind.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 6:23:27 PM)

What makes you think Italy is a trap?

Would Germany not be well advised to fall back, so as to free up as many troops as possible for northern France where the decisive battle will be fought on the beaches?

Well, the reason I think its a trap is because Pelton could have stopped me dead in his first line of defense. Instead he pulled back after just 2 small attacks. There was no reason for him to do so. He would have been a lot better off making me bleed a crap load of VPs going up Italy. The two small attacks alone cost me -8 VPs.

Playing the AI I lost -260 VPs going up this route and I was only south of Rome. This game has only one focus for the Axis and that is to cause the WAs ground casualties. This would have been the perfect spot for him to bleed me.

Hence I think its a trap. All he need is a Panzer Corps and I will be in deep, deep problems.

The terrain you're crossing now sucks to attack with tanks.
Serious penalties for armor and bonuses for infantry in rough terrain.

quote:

The CV values (26.1.4) of certain types of elements are
modified in certain types of close terrain designated as
dense and double dense. Dense terrain is Swamp, Heavy
Forest, Rough, and Bocage. Infantry type elements are
doubled and AFV and combat vehicle type elements are
halved in dense terrain.

JocMeister -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 6:59:32 PM)

Yes, but in a couple of turns I will reach excellent tank country. And by then my supply will be far behind. I will need to be very, very careful. Or is there any reason for Pelton to give up ground that I don´t know of?

carlkay58 -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 7:06:04 PM)

Southern Italy is a real problem for the Axis after the Italians surrender. Random partisan uprisings every turn which is easily negated by control but the railroads are trashed and supply becomes difficult. Thus the Axis are better off to retreat to the Naples area or north and form a line there.

Q-Ball -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 7:07:49 PM)

I bet he has a prepared line at Cassino. Only 9 hexes long, great defensive terrain, and at this stage you probably can't go around it, because you need the amphibs for France. By withdrawing to that line, he can hold you with 8-10 divisions and transfer everything else.

That's my guess

BTW, those are really good bombing results

JocMeister -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 7:42:11 PM)

Thanks for the info guys. [&o]

Perhaps I´m being overly careful. But in this case I think a little caution may not be a bad thing. Don´t want to outrun my supply by too far.

Despite the bomb results looking good I never get more then 4 or possibly 5 VPs per turn. I think the algorithm may favor small damage to many targets rather then looking at the number of destroyed factories?

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 9:57:24 PM)

Gee, now I thought I was gong to show my ignorance by making that observation![:D]

I am hoping the excitement levels really skyrocket with the Dday invasions! Can't wait.

LiquidSky -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/24/2015 10:08:58 PM)

The VP bombing algorithm is very easy.

Take the size of the factory (German Nationality Manpower, German Nationality Heavy Industry, Axis Oil, Axis Fuel, Axis Synthetic Fuel).

Multiply by the damage. Divide by 1000, divide by Magic Date Number.

The only two you have control over is the size and the damage. So bombing small factories gives small vps. Bombing the massive HI Ruhr Heavy Industry factories gives bigger vps. Getting large manpower centers gives good vps.

Bombing aircraft/vehicle/afv factories or Resources doesn't give vps. Only satisfaction.

Thanks! [&o]

Interesting how some people claim to be able to bomb for 10+ VPs per turn while the best I can manage is 4 or 5? Am I doing something wrong or are they...exaggerating the truth a bit?

Can´t really be bothered to do a proper update.

Usual bombings. Still rains over Europe. We reached Naples in Italy. 0 VPs this turn. Garrison VPs up to -5 now. [8|]

marion61 -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/25/2015 1:22:11 PM)

I don't think I've ever achieved 10's, and if I did it was fluke. 5-8 is what I get a turn, unless it's invasion time and the heavies have other work. 10's I'd have to see pics myself too.[;)] And consistent 10's not just one turn, that's an anomaly.

Without a map I don't know where he's at (or you for that matter), but if is he harvesting points with garrisons it suggests you're not putting any pressure on him (that's what he's being rewarded for). Part and parcel of his running away for a few turns I guess. You have to make the running away pay for you in the end by getting into Germany quicker.

The thing I find most interesting about the WA side is how you have to be at least 4-6 weeks ahead of the game in your planning.
What are your TF's up to?
Have you already planned the next landing(s)?

Missed the wheat amongst the chaff. ;)
Are you running the AAR essentially 'real time'? Can you go into what you have planned, or need to wait until after you're ashore to go over details?

JocMeister -> RE: Spanking of the Sheep! - JocMeister(WA) vs Pelton(Axis) (2/26/2015 7:33:45 AM)

Yeah, I update the AAR right after the turn. So no specifics until after the turn. [:)]

Working on it right now but it crashed after I started Fraps...so 45 minutes in the drain.

Well, I messed something up. Not sure what. Had the entire 8th, 9th, 15th and BC doing interdiction on the beaches. Weather is clear.

Pelton will no doubt toss my entire invasion off the beaches next round. I´m toast. [:(]
