In November 1975 the USS Kennedy ran down the cruiser USS Belknap (CG-26). A classmate of mine was the DCA on the CG and said it was incredible, the ship melted down to the main deck. All of the superstructure was aluminum and was "toast"!

Wow!

dr.hal -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/14/2015 11:07:02 PM)

Yup that's it, the Kennedy's avgas sprayed the entire upperworks of the Belknap... a REAL mess. I'm not sure, but I don't think anyone was killed.

I don't like real time games to begin with. I play games to relax and games with a time pressure just make me twitchy, which is the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve. So I've given it a pass.

Hi all,

I managed to watch the whole video late last night... [:D]

"Few" questions emerge: [8D]

#1 Damage model
Is the damage model symbolic (i.e. 1/xxx) or you can have separate systems (including separate turrets for example) damaged / destroyed?

Also we saw airplanes taking off / landing on burning carrier...

#2 Targeting
We saw that AAA opens fire on aircraft but what about ships with multiple Gunnery Directors?

Can they engage several targets (for example main battery against some high value threat - secondary battery against some lighter threat)?

What about night / low visibility?

What about radar?

#3 Speed of things
Everything is so fast that combat looks more like bar fight than delicate ballerina dancing (which is how the naval combat at that time should look like - the turrets traversing, the guns loading, the ship maneuvering etc.)... [8|]

The taking off / landing of aircraft on aircraft carriers is especially fast but everything else is way way way too fast IMHO as well...

Oh so close to a good game. Yet so very, very far. New design team and more research they might get it right.
Arcade game nothing more.
My 2 cents.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/16/2015 1:56:10 AM)

I've been playing World of Tanks for about four years. It's real time, but not overwhelming. I think ADD-addled teens won't like it as it can be a bit slow. I've also not put a dime into it for at least two years (paid maybe $30-40 in the beginning to get gold for tank camo and better crew training). Strategy does pay off in the game and sometimes you can even get your teammates to follow suggestions. Anyway, I see it as a complement to grognard games like this one.

I'll give the naval one a shot, but the air one doesn't interest me as much.

Cheers,
CC

tigercub -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/16/2015 10:38:46 AM)

looks great... planes Cody a bit like the Arty in the world of tanks!

Rising-Sun -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/17/2015 5:07:23 PM)

On Navy Field 2, I manage to get my captain to level 72 and trying to get that Fuso 1944 battleship. It take a lot of grind if you want a bigger or better ship.

mind_messing -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/18/2015 3:46:48 AM)

If it doesn't simulate things down to the last sailor, I have no interest in the game as it is a pile of arcadey trash unfit for human consumption.

It just something to do if you want to take a break, infact it good to work on your multi-tasking, at least improving it. But be warned, you can get stressful in this game if you easily get pissed lol.

alanschu -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/18/2015 8:42:20 AM)

It'll be arcadey which is still fun sometimes. I had a lot of fun with Navy Field.

As a minor callout to a different arcadey style game, I actually really enjoyed a smaller indie game called "Victory at Sea" on Steam. It has a "campaign mode" (which is more like a modern day Sid Meier's Pirates) and your successes give you "War Bonds" (LOL) as a currency, but as you gain xp you unlock bigger ships and can eventually compose a fleet of up to 20 ships to run amok in the various theaters (looked like there was Pacific, Med, and I think Atlantic as the third.

Arcadey but it's fun to unleash the big guns, and the best thing was that you can alter the speed of the game (including fully on pause) which is useful especially since some of the fleet wide order mechanics don't work as well as I'd like. You can also let the AI control the ships you don't want, which of course can have mixed results. My first missions were to compromise supply shipping to the Wotje Atoll, and doing so hurt its supplies which made the base easier to take (I needed less landing ships, which spawn automatically, to land to take the base).

I ran around with a few Fletchers, and eventually added some Portlands to the fleet which let me take the smaller atolls.

Itdepends -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/18/2015 10:11:15 AM)

Cricket I haven't played WOT for a while now. Started in arty until the reload nerd killed the joy and played a lot of TD snipers. I don't have the skill, skins or reflexes to play the heavies well.

I think you missed the satire in my post.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/18/2015 1:59:36 PM)

Does anybody knows if there is out there another game like this? but less arcadish game..

Last good naval game I played was Silent Hunter IV

Has anyone tried "Carriers at War"?

Rising-Sun -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/18/2015 4:51:31 PM)

Well you can try Great Naval Battle Series, but you will need DOS to run it. Too bad they never keep working on those type of games. More and more arcade games start to pouring in and I don't like that at all.

Think I got mine from ebay for under ten bucks, I use to have it when first came out, guess it gotten lost during moving around a lot. Good game by the way, wish they move up making next generation.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/19/2015 1:53:59 PM)

Thanks!

Would it run on a recent computer?

1EyedJacks -> RE: OT : World of Warships (3/19/2015 2:27:47 PM)

I think you're missing the the meat of the link I posted above... The DoS Box runs on a browser. I'm using Chrome & can play the game... It IS a little cluncky to play like this but man! I really enjoy attacking an enemy TF and trying to nail a target from the gun section, or watch the fire-fight from the bridge. Trying to run damage control is fun too.

I just noticed it now

Apollo11 -> RE: OT : World of Warships (4/2/2015 11:12:22 AM)

Hi all,

From time to time I go to channel of "The Mighty Jingles" (i.e. the author of the original video this thread started with) and I watch the progress of the "The World of Warships" through his videos...

He is knowledgeable chap (British) and it is interesting to listen to him!

IMHO the "The World of Warships", albeit arcadish, might be something that we Grognards can enjoy playing and relaxing from time to time... [8D]

So... if you get some spare time sometimes do watch some of his "The World of Warships" videos - it is worth it!

I played the snot outta that game. Awesome game.

Only realtime wargame I ever liked are the Command Ops tactical games. I beta tested Battles form The bulge and my old AAR of a beta test game is still stickied in that forum (although the forum is relegated to dormant status as Panther games moved on to a different publisher).

Game was not a clickfest as you can pause it at any time to issue orders. Its also NOT a 3D arcade game. You can even set it to run in set time increments and if you don't pause during that time to issue orders it reflects a sort of turn based game structure.

No time for tactical games though now that I'm addicted to the ultimate mega-game.

John 3rd -> RE: OT : World of Warships (4/3/2015 4:49:24 AM)

Still have the entire GNB Series. FANTASTIC stuff!

mind_messing -> RE: OT : World of Warships (4/17/2015 12:04:26 AM)

Tried it out at last, quite impressed, even more so considering it's still in Alpha.

While it's no simulation, it "feels" pretty real and it's a blast to play - I've had good fun ramming torpedoes into battleships.

I hope it isn't ruined by the cash aspect of it as most MMOs are.

Apollo11 -> RE: OT : World of Warships (7/4/2015 2:28:09 PM)

Hi all,

Just for info the "World of Warships" (WoW) is now in "Open BETA" and everybody can try it for free! [:D]

I downloaded it yesterday and had great fun (played on and off for some 6 hours) - it is very very addictive! [:)]

BTW, I managed to advance to the "Tier III" (and Rank #5) and now I am having fun with old USN Cruiser "Saint Louis"... [8D]

Rising-Sun -> RE: OT : World of Warships (7/4/2015 3:54:51 PM)

I was okay game, you will get bored playing it. I mess with it for six round, sank six ships and didn't lose any. Its pretty easy to play as long you have a good end pc to run the graphics.

Anyway I didn't mess with it much, I like flying or War Thunder better and the ground World of Tanks is fun for awhile.

oldman45 -> RE: OT : World of Warships (7/4/2015 7:15:28 PM)

I beta tested WoWs. Save yourselves the pain.

You have to take things "lightly" - it is arcade fun game to pass time! [;)]

But it still has many nice features that aren't so "gamey" (ships are big, cumbersome and they have inertia, when firing you have to understand the basics of gunnery etc.)... [:)]

Leo "Apollo11"

RockKahn -> RE: OT : World of Warships (7/4/2015 8:40:22 PM)

I think they did a good job with the game, but it's not nearly as enjoyable as I thought (hoped) it would be. The first few games were fun, but after a couple of dozen games I was like <yawn> "well that's enough of that" </yawn>.
