Symon -> OT Kinda - Just Because (5/13/2015 11:47:30 PM)

It's fun to play with some music going. I ve always liked this one to run the turns.

O fortuna, velut luna,
statu variabilis;
semper crescis, aut decrescis,
vita detestabilis:
nunc obdurate, et tunc curat,
ludo mentis aciem:
egestatem, potestatem,
dissolvit ut glaciem:
Sors immanis, et inanis,
rota tu volubilis;
status malus, vana salus,
semper dissolubilis;
obumbrata, et velata,
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum, dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris;
Sors salutis, et virtutis
michi nunc contraria;
est affectus, et defectus,
semper in angaria;
Hac in hora, sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem, sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!

UC Davis University Chorus, Alumni Chorus, Pacific Boychoir, and UCD Symphony; Jeffrey Thomas conducting. Carmina Burana. Carl Orff.

Didn't know that they had musical recordings on the Gorn home world. ;)
....GP

Did like it though.

Yes, we scratch the track in vinyl with our claws, then use a shed scale for the playback.

You think you are being a funny Gorn, but you're not. Musica Zen. Deutsche Grammophone. Real music for real people.

Lowpe -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/16/2015 6:21:53 PM)

I got hooked on Orff after watching the movie Excalibur and King Arthur rides thru the the Cherry Trees to the final battle with Modred.

"Come, Father, let us embrace."

Yes one of the best movie endings:

Wagner's Sigfried funeral march

geofflambert -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/16/2015 6:41:19 PM)

Try this. It's 15 minutes but worth it.

I notice the video is out of synch with the music. Don't watch or look for a different recording.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/16/2015 7:07:46 PM)

This ain't bad.

Play Siegfried's Funeral March when you're losing. [:(]

Play Forest Murmurs before you work up the nerve to watch a battle replay.

Now this is sublime:

Now go spend 99¢ @ at iTunes for these.

jmalter -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/16/2015 10:25:37 PM)

Well I'm always puzzled, Orff's tune 'O Fortuna' from his 'Carmina Burana' suite seems a celebration of life/rebirth, but it's always used to signify apocalyptic destruction, when it's used on a stand-alone sound-track.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/17/2015 10:35:21 AM)

Here's something nice. It's a full symphony (sechs und dreizig minuten) which still isn't long enough for one of my turns. [:(]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2wNAWBPFiI

Did you know that flutes can be made of wood, aluminum, steel, silver, gold plated silver, silver plated gold, gold and platinum? Each type has a different sound. To my ears steel is better than aluminum which is apropos as I had an aluminum flute, and I wasn't any good. [:(]

Anyways, if I knew a kid had a steel flute I knew he was way better than me. Silver has a very warm tone and denoted that the kid's parents made too much money. Silver/gold and gold flutes are sharper, give the sound the composer is usually after, and indicated the parents had way too much money and thought their kid was the next greatest flautist ever, or the instrument was donated by an aficionado who saw great talent in the kid. Platinum flutes are for the greatest flautist ever.

If youse guys want something appropriate for a wargaming sound track you can do far worse than And I will Kiss from the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games 2012. 17 minutes of incredible music - a cacophony of sound and an assault on the eardrums as the music grows and grows into a brilliant crescendo. The chanting, the strings that simply pluck your heart out, the whistling break at 8 mins (that was used to remember the fallen in the opening piece) the faux London church peal of bells sound that follows it and in the background, the constant, hypnotic drumming. What an astounding piece of music - and my elder little warspite played on the recording too!! [:)]

One of the better pieces of techno-pop I've heard. Thanks warspite1. Where'd you pick up that Bronx accent? You're implying there's not only a warspite II but a warspite III and even more?

JocMeister -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/17/2015 12:48:00 PM)

I think you guys got it all wrong. You should listen to music that makes you want to blow things up.

GREAT film and score! I went and saw the entire piece performed by the Fort Collins Symphony and Corale. There were 100 musicians and 150 voices who sang that 60+ minute piece and it ROCKED!

Does anyone know what that style of Japanese (?) music is where they have the HUGE drums? Would love to listen to some of that.

Maybe not apocalyptic, but O Fortuna is sure a complaint about fate and fortune. Lots of room for drama and cataclysm. Last 3 bars of the second canto pretty much describe the AE experience.

Sors immanis (Fate – monstrous)
et inanis, (and empty)
rota tu volubilis, (you whirling wheel)
status malus, (you are malevolent)
vana salus (well-being is vain)
semper dissolubilis, (and always fades to nothing)
obumbrata (shadowed)
et velata (and veiled)
michi quoque niteris; (you plague me too;)
nunc per ludum (now through the game)
dorsum nudum (I bring my bare back)
fero tui sceleris. (to your villainy)

Ciao. JWE [:)]

Hi John,

I believe the whole form is called Taiko drumming. Uses drums ranging in size from a serving plate to a Ford Expedition. [;)]

Traditional big-time Taiko from the group 'Kodo', "O Daiko". Uploaded from France and has an excellent French and Spanish playlist.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7HL5wYqAbU

An incredible blend of Taiko drums and Shakuhachi flute for your Zen pleasure from the group 'Tao', "The Martial Art of Noise", 2009.

Must say, the movie "Excalibur" couldn't have been done better. Hoorah! First time most of us saw Helen Mirren. She has never disappointed.

Here is another ball bouncingly brilliant song for use as a background to a wargaming session - such a sad, sad song and the song title sums it up really; perfect for moving pixilated battleships around a screen, giving orders to a squadron of torpedo bombers or just generally smacking the bejeeeezus out of your opponent.

Chickenboy -> RE: OT Kinda - Just Because (5/18/2015 5:41:18 PM)

Here's a nice piece with an unusual combination:

"Amazing Grace" with Taiko drums and Japanese flute. Serene calm and then BANG. THE. FREAKING. DRUMS.! Interesting approach, but it works! [8D]
