I took Ramree in June '42 in my game with John III. What happened next was so distasteful to him that he said he would edit the base characteristics to lower it's airfield size in his future mods. I don't know if he did that but it's a testament to what value he placed on the enemy Allied airfield there and the great naval battles that ensued.

I don't mean to laugh, really, but seriously? Changing the capabilities of a base that has been thoroughly researched in order to make the game easier for one player! [X(]

If there were any doubts what that mod is about this should enlighten us. [:D]

It is true, in my BTS game Ramree Island has an airbase SPS of 1. I was surprised, since I expected it to be bigger. I know to look where I am going now.

Short update:

Everything went very well. We now own Ramree. Turns out Jeff is blocking the river crossing. But its a lone division. The 1st Marines and 18th UK + 2 armored BDEs will brush them aside! I have 3 Indian divisions and 2 US Tank BDEs in reserve if needed.

We will prevail!

Off to celebrate my B-day tomorrow. Heading out to a resort with the wife today and no kids! Halleluja for sleep! [&o]

Have a good birthday and an enjoyable weekend with the wife.

That's funny RE: Ramree.

I don't even find it all that useful.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Chungking falls! (2/27/2017 3:29:33 AM)

Happy Birthday, Joc. Here's something I found at my nearby craft beer store on sale (about $9 for a four-pack, which is a good deal here).

Cheers,
CC

_____________________________________________________________________________

A short update with quite some action.

-----------------------------------
Burma
-----------------------------------
We launched an emergency plan to try and relieve the 2 cut off divisions at Katha. Due to the nature of the location it will take some time to reach. But 2 divisions, 3 brigades and 2 armored brigades are currently moving towards Katha.

Jeff tried some sweeps over my bases in Burma. Allied pilots almost had a "turkey shoot" and shot down 82 enemy planes for only 12 losses. The RAF carried the day backed up by some P38s.

Over at Ramree the 18th division just unloaded under heavy CAP. They will begin the river crossing at once. 2 Armored BDEs and an Indian division will follow.

75 fresh P47s just arrived by trains to Calcutta. No doubt Jeff wont be too happy when he sees them. [:)]

-----------------------------------
SOPAC
-----------------------------------
Jeff tries to hit a convoy unloading at Lae. Due to the level 9 airbase at PM only 4 hexes away this didnīt work out too well for him. I had about 200 planes on CAP. Mostly Spitfires and P38s. The outcome was predictable. Parts of KB even took part in the attack.

The Japanese lose a staggering 256 planes while the allies only lose 45 and a lone LST. 2 others are hit but might survive.

-----------------------------------
NOPAC
-----------------------------------
Attack on Coal Harbor has commenced! Looks like Jeff pulled out most of the troops but there are still 10k troops in the base. Soon to be captured... [:)]

June 20th(?) -43
_____________________________________________________________________________

Really tired today. Been up since 04:00. To tired to fire up the game and check the dates.

----------------------------
Burma
---------------------------
Jeff is playing more and more aggressively here. He is sweeping and actually bombing ground troops. We had a big tussle yesterday(?) where we got out ahead with about 2:1. With our overflowing (by allied standards) its fine but it came at a bad moment. He caught us while protecting our amphibs carrying the 18th UK to Ramree. So CAP wasnīt optimal as it was low. We still did good but the airgroups need rest after the LRCAP battle.

This forced me to commit the P47s as I refuse to postpone the Ramree reinforcements and they need aircover. I want to keep the P47s a secret so hopefully he wonīt find out next turn when the LRCAP the amphibs. Put them on high LRCAP and some P38s and Hurris low.

Jeff has moved a ton of troops North so if I can break through now either at Akyab or Ramree I will probably force him to retreat into China. That would be pretty much game over for him. Worry about my 2 cut off divisions though. I need 2-3 weeks before the relief force arrives.

----------------------------
SOPAC
---------------------------
Seeing the KB NE of Rabaul was a nice surprise. Lets exploit that! Shifting...

----------------------------
NORPAC
---------------------------
Coal Harbor is ours! Troops reprepping. Now it will be small landings in Alaska for a while.

No picture. Time for bed.

SOPAC
_____________________________________________________________________________

We reached 10th of July with a bang in SOPAC. My NavS is not working wonders despite good coverage but I have gotten several "main body" messages during the replay lately. This prompted me to temporarily hold the Buin reinforcements. Good call!

Last night a massive SAG led by Haruna went for Munda. Moonlight was very low though which favored the Allies and our radars.

I donīt think Jeff is too happy with that considering the overwhelming force. After this battle an allied hodgepodge CA TF engages. I really feared the worst here as this was not the most potent Allied TF to say the least. We did very well though! [&o]

This is followed by a ineffective Japanese bombardment that fails to close the airfield. Only 2 planes are lost on the ground.

No allied ships are lost during the battle but San Francisco need some yard time to fix 28 SYS damage. Japanese losses seem very light as well. 1 DD was picked off by LBA and 2 others very sunk in the morning by naval gunfire.

This was a victory for us though. I donīt think Jeff will come back for more. In fact an Allied SAG will pursuit stragglers tomorrow.

Not too bad. We are recovering nicely while waiting for the 254th and 255th armored brigades to cross. They will arrive with 3 days in between them and shouldnīt trigger an attack when crossing.

The 300 tanks together with superior firepower should overcome the defenders. Jeff is racing more troop towards the area though. He might make it in time. Looks like atleast another division.

Jeff has played well here and somehow dug up more troops than I thought possible. I still have 2 Australian divisions isolated at Katha. The relief force are only 10 days behind now though. The 2 division and 3 Brigades should be more than enough to open a road to the cut off divisions. My strategical reserve is still sitting at Calcutta ready to exploit a breakthrough.

In the air Jeff has the upper hand for now. He simply outnumbers me and I have to prioritize defending my Amphibs over anything else. This gives me little room to maneuver and do creative things. Reinforcements are on their way though including almost 100 Corsairs and 75 more P47s. That should do it.

Jeff found out I had P47s in Burma in the most pleasant way.

quote:

Morning Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 17 NM, estimated altitude 34,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIc Trop x 24
P-38H Lightning x 12
P-47D2 Thunderbolt x 37

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-84a Frank: 11 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIc Trop: 2 destroyed

More sweeps followed and when the dust settled 70 Japanese fighters were downed for 21 Allied. Only 4 pilots lost. I think Jeff might be more careful with his sweeping for a while.

I would absolutely love to do an AAR like I used to. But the sad truth is that I simply donīt have time for it. Two kids, full time job, the house and the everyday slog takes too much time. Currently renovating the living room which takes up every spare second I have to get that livable again.

Iīm really sorry guys but unless I win the lottery or something keeping a regular AAR isnīt going to happen. [:(]

That being said a short recap is coming! [:)]

JocMeister -> RE: Chungking falls! (4/28/2017 5:57:27 AM)

September 5th -43
_____________________________________________________________________________

So what have I been doing lately? Things are going as planned with just minor hiccups. We are moving on a broad front with 2 more fronts to open shortly.

----------------------------
CENTPAC
-----------------------------

Pearl Harbor is liberated and the shift in VPs drop the ratio under 2. PH is already fully operational and preparing the next push deeper into CENTPAC. The 2nd Armored BDE will be perfect for the coming offensive. 150 tanks (50 Stuarts, 50 Shermans and 50 Grants for only 3800 Stacking!!!). Talk about Atoll buster...[:)]

Christmas Island is also secured and is being set up as a fuel depot and forward base.

----------------------------
NORPAC
-----------------------------

We are all the way up to Sitka. Next stop Kodiak and Anchorage. This is just a feint though. The real invasion will happen much further west in the Aleutians and will be in force. ETA 2-3 months.

----------------------------
SOPAC
-----------------------------

Jeff have played superbly here and really caused me some grief. He has held me at bay with minimal forces. Things are about to change though. Darwin and Rabaul are the next targets here. Priority Darwin as it will put a tremendous amount of strain on the Japanese. I already have several divisions prepping for targets in the lower DEI.

----------------------------
Burma
-----------------------------

Most of the action has been here. Battle is already won though. More on that in a separate post.

JocMeister -> RE: Chungking falls! (4/28/2017 6:22:11 AM)

Burma
_____________________________________________________________________________

As mentioned most of the action has been here lately. I feel quite confident here though. Jeff made a fatal mistake here which gave us the upper hand.

A couple of months ago I sent in troops through Northern Burma. I messed up and got 2 divisions cut off (seen on the map). Jeff got really excited about that and have sent in a huge amount of troops trying to destroy them. I think he has 6-8 divisions in the 3 hexes around Katha.

In his excitement he missed a 2k AV stack moving out North of Akyab. They could simply walk straight into the open plains where they turned south towards Ramree. They have now opened the "back door" from Ramree. This not only opens a nice supply route into Burma for me but also allows me to move troops straight into central Burma.

Obviously this is something worthy of committing the reserves for. 7 divisions are already in place in the 3 hexes around Ramree with another 5 coming. Due to stacking limits I canīt drop them all at Ramree though. Its currently a train where I have to wait for troops to leave Ramree before dropping more. But now that I can move them into central Burma the flood gates are open. In about a month I will have something like 6k AV in Central/Southern Burma.

The irony of it all is that I donīt think Jeff will manage to destroy the 2 divisions. I purposely not opened the hex for them to keep Jeff encouraged to stay up north. But now that the route to Ramree is open Iīm going to try and free them from the South. I think I have enough time. If they can survive 2 deliberate attacks (I think they can) they will be saved in about 10-12 turns.

Airwise I have the upper hand. Jeff is relying on Magwe (lvl 7) and Schwebo (lvl 5). Besides that he doesnīt have any built up airfields in Burma outside Rangoon (which I can bombard from the sea). Iīm pretty confident I can close them if needed. But for now Iīm not doing much besides covering my Amphibs at Ramree

I have also been careful to not show him all my cards here. I have a reserve force of 100 P38s and 200 Hellcats hiding at Madras. In total I have well over 1000 fighters in the area. But Iīm just showing Jeff about half of that. I does know I have lots of Corsairs and some P47s though. We had one clash which ended in a draw. I had a low LRCAP up to try and hit his bombers. He did hit the LRCAP with sweeps which hurt my P40s pretty badly. My high LRCAP hurt him pretty badly though and he hasnīt been flying since then.

Overall Iīm a bit behind time wise from where I wanted to be in Burma. But we are making progress and Jeff is pouring in troops to Burma. In fact all the troops movements Iīm getting via SIGINT are going to Burma. Nothing for the DEI, NORPAC, CENTPAC or SOPAC. If that is true I hope the push into the DEI will be fairly easy.

Fighter pools
_____________________________________________________________________________

Never ever have had such overflowing pools.

100 spare P47s?
70 P38s?
200 Hellcats?
300 P40Ks?

This is one of the reasons I feel quite confident in the air war. I confident I can gain air superiority when I want it. And not just for a few days.

No problem Joc and thanks for the updates.

As an avid Allied AAR reader I know we forumites are generally satisfied with the simple things [:D]

When you have a few moments would you mind updating the entire OOB in every theater with every "plan for target" ; and outline every CV Taskforce with Plane Squadrons and individual assignments.

...ohh perhaps your pilot / airframe pools as well and plans for them

LMAO...

In seriousness - the reconquest of Pearl is most interesting but behind us.. and the IJ Empire is on the defensive.

Please try to drop a line when you hit the Mariana's and or Phillipines.. or which ever major axis of advancement you choose.

JocMeister -> RE: Chungking falls! (5/1/2017 6:35:39 AM)

13th September -43
_____________________________________________________________________________

Been some quiet days. Will be a few more before things get busy again as two invasion fleets have departed their bases. I expect KB intervention against one of them. Full CV fleet + CVEs will cover. 600 planes in total. Mostly Hellcats but due to PDU OFF there are some Kittens in the mix. The whole fleet is at sea.

-7 Fleet CVs
-6 CVLs
-12 CVEs
-4 Fast BBs
-18 CAs
-8 CLs
-100+ DDs
-42 subs

If Jeff comes out to defend we will not back down. Donīt think he will do that just yet though. He will probably wait for a better opportunity where he could get good LBA support and the stakes are higher. KB is pretty much the only thing defending the DEI and SOPAC and he canīt afford to lose it.

Then again he has been very aggressive from time to time so you never know.

NORPAC
_____________________________________________________________________________

The coming Allied offensive start off with the invasion of Kodiak. Its a pretty risky one as I am outside my own LBA and air cover is provided by only 5 CVEs. They are stacked with maximum of fighters and only 8 TBs for NavS/ASW though and it will hopefully be enough. I brought some slow BBs with me and I hope they can soak up some damage and draw away attention from the Amphibs.

Jeff did a probing attack yesterday. CAP held up well and shot down all Betties but tomorrow will be the real test.

quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Sitkinak Island at 185,47

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 78 NM, estimated altitude 30,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 27 minutes

A6M5b Zero x 36
G4M1 Betty x 5
Ki-43-IV Oscar x 40

Allied aircraft

FM-1 Wildcat x 16
F6F-3 Hellcat x 24

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5b Zero: 1 destroyed
G4M1 Betty: 3 destroyed
Ki-43-IV Oscar: 3 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 1 destroyed
FM-1 Wildcat: 1 destroyed

I need to not get crippled tomorrow. If I can avoid that I can close Anchorage and Kodiak air fields. After that we should be fine. I have enough naval power here to deal with almost anything and I donīt think Jeff has more than some cruisers up here and possibly BB Kongo (?) who was found by SIGINT a few months ago.

Luckily I have about 20 Fletchers with 6 BBs so I should be fine unless I completely lose aircover. I really donīt like this OP though. I usually donīt shy away from risk when the rewards are worth it. But Iīm not convinced this is worth it. I really want another front opened up though. Iīm still committed to advancing on as many fronts as possible.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow. A thunderstorm would be nice...[sm=innocent0001.gif]
